• Reschedule Date of Big Tujunga Canyon Homes Scoping Meeting
This petition is to request a reschedule of the Scoping meeting from Thursday, December 11, 2014 6-8pm to a later date, preferably after the holidays, when more members of the community can attend. We also request a change of venue that would accommodate a larger number of people from the community. This proposed 242 housing development will have a significant impact on our entire community and we need more time to inform our community of Sunland-Tujunga that did not receive a notice of this Scoping meeting.

  • Ban on ammunition
It is not really even a point of argument that the language in the second amendment is vague. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Militias were necessary for a quick assemblage of troops to fight off the tyrannical rule that was Britain. Although the language is vague, if looked at in the context of the time period, it was interpreted with reason. We continue to interpret the bill of rights with reason to this day. This is why it isn’t legal for citizens to own a grenade launcher. Owning a grenade launcher is not reasonable and that is something that most citizens could agree on and most would have to concede that the amendment has an implication of the people’s right to bear arms (within reason). This has to be true, if reason, health, and the well-being of the populace were taken out of the subtext and this amendment is to be read as strictly literal, then citizens should all be able to own rocket launchers, tanks, and if they can afford it, why not nuclear weapons? Being that it is commonly understood that this amendment is meant to be practiced within reason. It is necessary to look at it within the context of what is reasonable this day and age. The second amendment is specific in its language about the right to bear arms, but it is not specific in the right of what type of ammunition is to be used in those firearms. If one argues that it is also implied in the language of the second amendment that it is the right of citizens to bear arms for the means of self defense (a reasonable argument) then it could also be argued that live ammunition is not necessary in order for our firearms to be used in self-defense. Self-defense can be achieved through rubber bullets and bean bags loaded into guns instead of live ammunition. It has been proven that rubber bullets and bean bags, (which can still be considered lethal) can be used effectively, successfully, and with far less cases of death, than live ammunition. If the sale of live ammunition for handguns, semiautomatic weapons, and assault rifles were banned, citizens could still defend themselves with less lethal means. A ban on live ammunition would diminish instances of accidental gun deaths (which account for more deaths than justifiable gun homicides). What is not reasonable is allowing handguns, or semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles as acceptable to be used with a justification of self defense when they are more often not used for self-defense. There were 6,115 handgun homicides in 2010 and 11,078 total homicides from all types of guns including handguns. While there were only 617 instances of justifiable homocides . (These numbers have not changed significantly since then.) This means that for out every 18 gun homicides, only 1 was justifiable. This shows that these weapons are not mainly used for self-defense. If we compare the murder rates in the United States to that of England (a country with a ban on guns), our murder rate is counted between 4 to 10 times higher, percentagewise, in the United States. Even if we take the lower percentage in the homicide rate in England, that means that the United States could potentially lower our murder rate by as much as 75% at the low end. 75% of about 11,000 people is more than 7,500 lives that could be saved each year if guns were banned completely. This petition does not even call for a complete ban of arms, which would be unconstitutional. It calls for a ban on live ammunition for arms designed mainly for killing people. Self defense can be obtained through arms that are not solely meant for killing people. A hunting rifle or shotgun or even a taser can be used for self defense and can also be loaded with rubber bullets and bean bags and be just as effective as scaring off, injuring, or even lethally wounding an intruder. This petition is for a ban on live ammunition for handguns, semiautomatic weapons, assault rifles, or any weapon designed mainly to kill people (hunting rifles and shotguns excluded). This ban extends to citizens and police officers except for special law enforcement units (SWAT teams) like the AFO (Authorized Firearms Officers) in England. This is also a call for a ban on assault rifles (other than those that are already registered lawfully). No new assault rifles. The same weapons bought and kept for the justification of militias and self-defense are much more often used to the detriment of society. • Google: Please Review All Apps Before Adding Them To The App Store.
Over the past four months there have been calls for Google to remove three different apps from the App Store due to violations of Google's Terms of Service. The first and second, BombGaza and Gaza Assault were removed back in August. Then recently Google came under fire again when we launched a petition and social media campaign calling for the removal of a game entitled 'Ass Hunters' where players actually "Shoot The Gays." Unfortunately, Google does not review each app before allowing it to go live on the App Store. These kinds of games will continue to surface in the App Store until Google changes it's policy and begins moderating Apps before they go live. Please join me in asking that Google begin reviewing Apps before they go on the App Store.

  • End "Black Thanksgiving"
Preserve traditional American values- Black Friday may be a tradition, but breaking up families during the holidays should never stand. The people of U.S. deserve leisure time, and time to spend with family and friends on Thanksgiving. Retail companies should not force employees to come to work the day of Thanksgiving to tend to mass chaos when people are suppose to be spending time being grateful for what they have.

  • Nov 28 Deadline: Olympic Peninsula- Navy Electronic War Games Target Americans, Wildlife, Nationa...
An article by Dahr Jamail at http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/27339 states that 36 supersonic Growler jets will fly 8 to 16 hours/day, 260 days/year, conducting 11 “training events” every day on 3 mobile radiation emitters placed in 15 different locations—all ‘critical habitats’ for endangered species in the Olympic National Forest—and the airspace over the Olympic National Park, a UN World Heritage Site. The Navy is exempt from prohibitions of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and will conduct live firing of guns, missiles, torpedoes and chaff; it will avoid conducting bombing exercises in the Sanctuary, “to the maximum extent practicable.” Weapons include "lasers, high powered microwaves (HPMs), electromagnetic pulse (EMP), anti-radiation energy in concentrated beams designed to attack personnel, facilities or equipment with intent of degrading, neutralizing, or destroying enemy capabilities." Navy "friendly electronic attack (FEAs) could potentially deny essential services to a local population that, in turn, could result in loss of life, and/or potential ramifications. Not one single public notice about this training was published in any local newspapers serving affected communities on the Olympic Peninsula. The public’s comments on jet noise, EMR health dangers, and pollution have been ignored. A coalition of local Native Tribes, Idle No More, demonstrated against this plan as destructive for the land, water and traditional Native uses on October 29, 2014 and presented letters of objection to the Forest Headquarters in Olympia. Many such letters of protest are now found "missing." And the US Navy already has a functioning site to test their electromagnetic radiation weapons in Idaho.

  • Tell Retailers: Don't separate workers from their families on Thanksgiving!
Over the years, retail chains have opened earlier and earlier on “Black Friday" to help boost their profits. But last year, some retailers went to a whole new level and opened their doors on Thanksgiving Day! And this year, already a dozen retailers plan to be open -- forcing more and more workers to miss Thanksgiving dinner. Here’s the worst part: last year, retailers that opened on Thanksgiving didn’t even see a big increase in sales. And on top of that, most Americans opposed the idea and said they wouldn’t shop on Thanksgiving! That’s why over 17 other major retailers have rejected starting Black Friday on Thursday, and allow workers to stay home and enjoy time with their families. Costco put it best “our employees work especially hard during the holiday season and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families.” We must demand that greedy corporations follow the example of courageous retailers like Costco, Patagonia, REI, Barnes & Noble, Sur La Table, American Girl, Gamestop, Burlington, Dillard’s, DSW, Nordstrom, Patagonia, REI, T.J. Maxx, and Marshall’s by rejecting this disgusting new trend.

  • Stop the Eviction of The Peace House
The Peace House is a historical collective of community organizers dedicated toward individual, community, and world betterment projects. The house is used as a vehicle to transform individual lives and the community. Their projects include the Anti-Racist Action DC, The DC Free School, and the 30 year+ White House Peace Vigil. Our top priority is to keep the house open and the members in the house in order to allow their work to continue. Tell the DCRA that an internal temperature of 51.6F°, despite no heating unit available, cannot be "unsafe," and that being forced out because of the landlord, Ellen Thomas, failing to make repairs constitutes a wrongful eviction!

  • Require a Special Prosecutor to Investigate Incidents of Fatal Police Misconduct
After the death of Michael Brown at the hands of a police officer in Ferguson, MO earlier this year, over 116,000 people joined the call for the appointment of an independent prosecutor to examine the event. Petition signers believed that St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch's record made his office particularly unfit to investigate this crime. However, similar conflicts of interest are all too common when local prosecutors investigate local police. To combat this problem and ensure justice for the victims of police violence, I will be introducing legislation to require the appointment of an independent prosecutor to oversee every investigation into any allegation of police misconduct that caused a loss of life. Will you join me by signing this petition and calling on my fellow elected officials to support our bill?

Ashona Osborne has been a dedicated employee of Wendy’s International, Inc. on the Northside in Pittsburgh since May. Ashona is the sole provider for her 4-year old son and she works hard every day to provide for him. Employees are encouraged to report questions or concerns and are assured “no retaliatory action will be taken” against them. There is a lengthy list of documented incidents where employees were disrespected, and even abused. Ashona was one of the first to stand up to this type of work environment. Her firing is in direct conflict with Wendy’s own workplace policies.
