On December 30, 1994, a man walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic in Massachusetts, shouted "This is what you get! You should pray the rosary!" and shot the receptionist to death. So with the support of local law enforcement, Massachusetts passed a law prohibiting protests within 35 feet of abortion clinics. Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court struck that law down. Today, women in Massachusetts are wondering whether, at their next medical appointment, they'll end up face to face with people who shout, spit, and threaten -- all while calling themselves "pro-life Christians." Boston Archbishop Sean O'Malley has the power to set a very different example. Yes, he's well-known for his opposition to abortion -- but also for his thoughtful and pastoral approach to church leadership. Cardinal O'Malley should immediately call on Massachusetts Catholics to voluntarily refrain from holding protests outside abortion clinics -- and remind the nation that, no matter what you think about abortion, there's nothing Christian about harassment and intimidation.

The SFDC building owners want to push us out and displace an entire network of thriving businesses in order to capitalize on higher rents. We will lose good paying blue collar PDR jobs in San Francisco. The landmark status change will displace an entire ecosystem of women-owned and LGBT friendly businesses.

Current Board Trustee of District 1 has been making ill-informed decisions against the will of the people of his district, despite obvious community dissent. Specifically, authorizing the continuation of litigation fighting TEA's decision to take over the Board of Trustees and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to do so, while at the same time laying off valuable teachers.

Annually, over 90,000 lbs of fugitive coal dust from Norfolk Southern's coal terminal operations rains down on the people and property in the surrounding neighborhoods of Lambert's Point, West Ghent, Larchmont and points beyond. Coal dust contains arsenic, mercury and other heavy metals, which have been linked to neuro-developmental delays in children, lung cancer, pneumonia, emphysema, bronchitis, asthma attacks, heart disease and premature death. Taking the reasonable measures of covering the dumpers, the conveyors and the coal cars could significantly reduce the volume of coal dust released into the air and the river water.

After an endangered species makes a good return, the shoreline should be open for the enjoyment and unique sense of peace obtained from communion with our nation's natural resources. The Civics for All Initiative would lift civics requirements in the Seattle Public Schools (SPS)and thereby lift students' civic awareness and engagement. Currently, K-12 students in Seattle know little about civics, about how government works and about their rights and duties as citizens. This is because Seattle's civics education requirements are embarrassingly small.
