Since taking office in 2011, Gov. Corbett has expanded tax breaks for corporations and the energy industry while cutting $1 billion from education statewide. Under his leadership alone, 24 schools have been closed, and 4,000 teachers and school support staff have been laid off. Those of us who have a driver’s license often do not realize that a substantial number of people in our community are excluded from civic life because they are unable to access a State ID or driver’s license. Some of the obstacles encountered include: difficulty making medical appointments and inability to prove identity for employment, interactions with law enforcement officials, and to open bank accounts. Motivated by values of inclusion that dictate embracing and officially acknowledging the Washtenaw County residents who lack photo identification cards, the Washtenaw County ID (WCID) Task Force has come together to oversee the creation of a local solution: a county-wide photo identification. Our Vision We envision a county where all people are treated with dignity and respect and given the means to participate meaningfully in community life. This includes having community services that are accessible to all Washtenaw County residents. In addition to this, we want to see our county as a place where public health and safety services are viewed as helpful and non-threatening. Currently law enforcement is detaining individuals because of lack of photo identification. In our county, we want everyone to have the means to prove who they are regardless of income, race, gender identity, and citizenship status. We the undersigned are concerned citizens who support our County leaders in making photo identification cards available to all Washtenaw County residents. Personal Account A Public Health Outreach Worker contacted WICIR when 3 families of new born infants at the U of M Hospital could not get affidavits of parentage to include the unmarried father’s name. This was directly due to the parents having had expired driver’s licenses and could not produce current state driver’s license, state ID or passport to prove their identities to receive a notarized affidavit by the hospital vital records department. At the County Clerk level, they are having the same problem in that they cannot get copies of their infants' birth certificates because they cannot produce the same updated state identification of passport. Our Strategy Our plan of action to achieve our goal of printing a county-wide photo ID includes: • Present our petition to the County Commissioners at a public meeting. • Demonstrate wide-spread sentiment. • Build a base of supporters. • Implement program by the end of 2014. • Obtain 5,000 signatures of Washtenaw County residents by May 15, 2014. A decade ago, New York led the nation by allowing undocumented students to pay instate tuition rates at its public universities. Now, we have the opportunity to make greater progress on this issue by giving these students access to state financial aid. This will allow more students to attend college, graduate, and reach their full potential. Earlier this week, Governor Cuomo stated he would sign the NY Dream Act if it reached his desk. Today, the NY State Assembly passed the bill. Now, we have to pressure the NY State Senate to do the same. Tell the NY State Senate: Pass the NY Dream Act now!

A merger of the two largest cable companies in the United States would be a bad deal for consumers, leading to less competition and likely higher prices for subscribers. And a combined Comcast-Time Warner would be in a position to slow or even block Internet traffic from content providers like Netflix or Hulu if the cable company decided they didn't want the competition, threatening net neutrality. Subscribers are frustrated with the service and price of cable service, and almost no one thinks letting the two companies with the worst consumer satisfaction ratings in the industry would somehow magically make those problems go away. One of the biggest threats posed by this proposed merger is to a free and open Internet. Already cable companies are facing loss of subscribers from unhappy customers who want to "cut the cord" and switch to online services like Netflix and Hulu. Recent court cases have struck serious blows to the principal of net neutrality , which means a merged Comcast/Time Warner would have wide latitude to start restricting bandwidth or demanding payment from online services they deem to be competition. And with Comcast already owning Universal Pictures and all of NBC, the economic incentive to discriminate against competing content providers would be very strong. Finally, a combined Comcast/Time Warner would be, quite simply, just too big, with too much power over subscribers, content providers and, quite frankly, too much influence in Washington. Comcast and Time Warner may be hoping that armies of highly paid lobbyists and attorneys can push this deal through, so we have to make sure that the voices of millions of unhappy cable subscribers who know this will be a bad deal for them are heard.

To me this is simply common sense. How can anyone find fault with a bill that would restrict a person CONVICTED of the crimes outlined in the bill from possessing, transporting, or carrying a firearm for 5 years. Unless of course that legislator (those legislators) are owned by the NRA.
