Last year, the Supreme Court gutted the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since then, Republicans across the country have raced to implement new restrictive laws that would do exactly what the Voting Rights Act was meant to protect. But now, there's a chance to stop that. Late last week, Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and John Conyers (D-MI) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced new legislation—the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014—that would strengthen the Voting Rights Act. Right now, Congress can restore those protections by passing this important bill. Rep. Bishop should support this effort by cosponsoring and fighting for a strong bill.”

The Voting Rights Act is one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation Congress has ever passed. The effort afoot is to disenfranchise those rights and manipulate and polarize the voting public.

I am preparing this petition because it is clear to me that certain of our Republican political operatives have a personal interest in making it more difficult for the poor, the elderly, the young and the black and brown segments of our society to exercise their right to cast a ballot. This SHOULD be deeply troubling to anyone who believes the right to vote is essential to the preservation of our democracy, AND that any action which ignores the intersection of institutionalized prejudices and the manipulation of power for the privileged elites in America is blind to its harm.

When I was 8, I wrote a letter to President Bush about why kids should be allowed to vote. I got no response, but when my sister sent in fan mail, she got an autographed picture. At 19, perhaps I still hold a grudge against authoritarian rulers making decisions for a collective population.

I am starting this petition to fight Voter Suppression legislation in NC and across the nation. We must restore our right to vote and allow ALL eligible voters their voice in our government.
