At a public hearing on November 5, 2013, the Spencer School Board unanimously voted to demolish Reynolds School. Members of the Spencer Historic Preservation Commission had toured the building earlier in the month and sent a letter to the School Board asking that the building be restored. The Reynolds School Building was built in 1926. It is locally significant as a local example of architecture designed by the firm of Beuttler & Arnold in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth–Century Gothic Revival style. Historic buildings such as Reynolds School serve as a public and physical reminder of our city’s heritage and on-going commitment to education. Reynolds School is not only architecturally significant, but a point of pride for our community, linking generations of residents to our common value of education. Historic places are fundamental to defining the identity of our communities and should be preserved, not torn down in the name of “progress." Please join us in telling the Spencer School Board and the Spencer Historic Preservation Commission to work together to find an adaptive reuse for the building. We do not want this important building torn down!

This holiday season, 2 million people in Illinois, including 886,000 children, will have less to eat because of recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps). Now, some in Congress want to cut another $40 billion from an effective anti-hunger program that helps families put food on the table. We need to act quickly so that Rep. Rodney Davis understands that taking food from kids and other vulnerable populations is just wrong.

Should America's flagship Catholic university take a million dollars from the Koch brothers to spread their right-wing, anti-poor agenda? The billionaire Koch brothers are the biggest funders of the tea party movement and the anti-government think tanks that are waging war on anti-poverty programs. But even though the Koch brothers' efforts are clearly out of step with Catholic social teaching, the Catholic University of America just announced a million dollar donation from Charles Koch to their business and economics school. The Koch brothers' past donations to universities have come with strings attached -- Charles Koch used a similar donation to veto most of the professors another university wanted to hire with his donation. Catholic University needs to put its academic integrity and commitment to social justice ahead of the Koch brothers' radical agenda.

In light, of all the media coverage on misuse of firearms in the United States, Gov. Jerry Brown protects law abiding citizen's rights to own and use a firearm while also tightening restrictions on careless gun ownership.

Republicans are falling over themselves to get to a microphone or TV camera to fuss in false overconcern for the 4-5 million citizens whose substandard insurance policies are being cancelled. Cancellation of policies has always been central to the market nature of the insurance business. These citizens can obtain another policy As an emergency physician I am face to face everyday with many of the 50 million of Americans until now locked out of insurance and good healthcare. While nowhere as good as single payer, the PPACA does protect many patients. We must thus protect the PPACA.
