  • Dear Columbia County Commissioners: Protect Clatskanie's Family Farms and Wildlife Habitat!
My husband and I have a small self-sufficient farm within a few hundred feet of the proposed rezoning. This rezoning is contrary to the spirit of Oregon's land use laws. It paves the way for allowing transfer of hazardous materials without public input!

  • Tell Florida not to block Obamacare outreach workers from meeting with uninsured
Unable to repeal Obamacare at the federal level, Republicans have taken their ideological crusade to deny health care access for the uninsured elsewhere. The Florida Department of Health has banned federal outreach workers (called “Navigators”) from coming onto state health facilities for the purpose of signing up the uninsured for subsidized health care coverage available under Obamacare. Please sign our petition telling Florida Department of Health officials to allow health care Navigators on state owned health facilities to discuss the Affordable Care Act.

  • Secretary Squires, time to go
New Mexico has serious issues with poverty, including the nation's worst ranking for child welfare, serious mental health issues and largest number of people living with food insecurity. Secretary Sidonie Squires is responsible for our most important programs addressing these problems, but she denies the problem and the science behind it. She told staff in an email, "There has never been and is not now any significant evidence of hunger in New Mexico." Like other out-of-state leaders appointed to critical government positions, Squires didn't know New Mexico's issues when she started and she just won't learn.

  • Crosswalk Warning Lights
The Mission and Van Ness crossing in Santa Cruz is a death trap. I have a property near the corner and have watched countless accidents and near-death experiences through the years. With a new medical and pediatrics center going in at this location, crosswalk warning lights or a traffic signal is badly needed. I do not want to see pregnant women and children plowed over. Because this is a four-lane road, drivers speed around stopped cars and do not see the people in the crosswalk. Over and over I have seen people nearly plowed over and cars smashed. The intersection is full of skid marks. Protect our kids and families who will be using the new PAMF center.

  • Stop Wrongful Evictions at Kingston Gardens Apartments in Macon, GA
The aim of this petition is to minimize and/or stop repeated wrongful evictions by Kingston Gardens Apartments Management and also to create awareness about landlord harassment of tenants and tenant’s guests. These instances of harassment have been in the form of retaliation/bullying, victimization, threats, warnings, and orders to refrain from protected activities and/or exercising rights by Kingston Gardens Tenants. This conduct on Management’s behalf establishes actions of interference, intimidation, and coercion which are a direct violation of Kingston Garden’s lease. Management’s constant interference with the tenant’s right to peaceful enjoyment of the premises as a tenant also has created a hostile living environment with low morale for the Kingston Gardens Apartment community. This behavior has not only affected the tenants mentally and emotionally but tenant's families as well, which include innocent children. Landlord harassment is the willing creation, by a landlord or his agents, of conditions that are uncomfortable for one or more tenants in order to induce willing abandonment of a rental contract. Victimization is the unfavorable treatment of someone because they have taken (or might be taking) action under the Equality Act or supporting somebody who is doing so. There have been many kinds of harassment and intimidation on Kingston Gardens Management’s behalf, including illegal evictions, utility shut-offs, and illegal entry into apartments without permission. Based on Kingston Gardens repeated failure of non-compliance with rental agreement and obligation to maintain premises, my family as well as other families have endured undue hardships. The landlord/tenant relationships have been demolished, because of the continued fear of Kingston Gardens Management reprisal. The relationship is now a Landlord’s domination over Tenant and management has refused to exercise business practices in good faith. Kingston Gardens Tenants' fears and isolation from one another have allowed management to continue the harassment. The effects of landlord harassment can be devastating. Reporting harassment, victimization, and bullying requires courage and determination. Those who have suffered harassment, victimization and/or bullying may feel: A lack of confidence, loss of self¬-esteem, anxious, intimidated, threatened and humiliated, unable to deal with the situation, frustrated and angry, isolated and stressed, traumatized, loss of motivation, and depressed or physically ill. We, the tenants of Kingston Gardens Apartment Community, request that management take action to correct these issues as well as take full responsibility for your actions. We would like to emphasize the frustration and agony that this has caused so many families due to Kingston Garden’s Apartments Management poor business practices and lack of responsibility to the tenants. Kingston Gardens Management has repeatedly failed to comply and adhere with HUD policies and procedures as well as regulations of their rental agreement. We would like you to understand the repercussions that you will face as a result of your misconduct that has caused devastating setbacks to the family dynamics of so many low-income families. We request the assurance from management of a collective bargain in our effort to reclaim a restored positive tenant/landlord relationship. Hopefully, the tenants of Kingston Gardens can regain trust in Management as well as a better quality of life.

  • Tell Senators Warren and Udall: FDA’s Voluntary GMO Labels Are Good for Monsanto, Bad for Consumers!
Last month, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) asked the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to finalize its 2001 guidance on voluntary labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The senators advertised their request as a move intended to benefit consumers. But in fact, a federal voluntary labeling plan plays right into the hands of Monsanto and big food. Sometimes it's appropriate to contact a senator who doesn't directly represent you, because his or her actions could result in a federal law that could affect all Americans, not just the citizens in one state. This is one of those times. Please tell Senators Warren and Udall that FDA guidance on voluntary GMO labeling would be great for Monsanto and big food, but bad for consumers. How would finalizing the FDA's 2001 guidance hurt consumers? Worst-case scenario, the biotech and food industries could use the FDA guidance to preempt state laws requiring mandatory labeling of GMOs. Currently, states have the right to enact GMO labeling laws precisely because the FDA has not formally ruled on GMO labeling. Second, the FDA’s guidance on voluntary GMO labeling could be used to put an end to existing, legitimate voluntary non-GMO labeling efforts. By allowing the FDA, which has previously (and controversially) ruled that GMO and non-GMO foods are “substantially equivalent,” the FDA could rule against non-GMO or GMO-free labels on the basis that they mislead consumers by implying that there’s a difference between GMO and non-GMO foods. Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association, two of the biggest funders of campaigns to defeat state GMO labeling laws, support the FDA’s guidance on voluntary labeling of GMOs. Consumers don't because we know who will benefit from the FDA's rule - big corporations, not us. We need to get Senators Warren and Udall back on our side.

  • END ILLEGAL GUN-RUNNING IN AMERICA
GUNS ARE MADE FOR ONE THING - TO KILL! THEY ARE "VEHICLES" OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION. All other "vehicles" are registered and owners must pass tests to be licensed to use them. Why not guns also? Gun registration and training and testing with rules and regulations do not hamper your Second Amendment rights if you are safe and sane and responsible as an American citizen. But with guns, there is another added problem: the possibility of gun-running for profit from states with loose laws to supply the crazed demands for firearms in inner city ghetto areas where being armed is like living in Wyatt Earp's times of the Wild West. Years ago, the U.S. Congress passed a Uniform Commercial Code to standardize paperwork for much of interstate commerce. Today's need for up-to-date gun laws requires us to develop a modern registration system, administered nationwide by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). COME ON AND WAKE UP AMERICA - STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF INNOCENTS!

  • Please Save the Delta Watershed and Submit Public Comments to Stop the Raising of Shasta Dam
My friends and I are concerned about the Bureau of Reclamation's plan to raise Shasta Dam. The raising of Shasta Dam will flood sacred native sites, demolish existing habitat for endangered species, destroy existing resorts and marinas, dislocate the town of Lakehead, CA and impact our local economy in a negative manner.

  • Gov. Brewer: Stop attacking immigrant women!
Thanks to the Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, abused immigrant women are losing their drivers' licenses. Under her new policy they won't even have the ability to get into a car and escape their abusers. Brewer's order to block immigrants from getting drivers' licenses at first only included DREAMers, the recipients of deferred action under President Obama's 2012 program. But rather than do away with her discriminatory practice after faced with public outcry, Brewer vindictively included all immigrants who have received deferred action. This will now include battered immigrant women in Arizona, who can receive deferred action under the Violence Against Women Act. The state of Arizona has already issued tens of thousands of drivers' licenses to immigrants who qualified for deferred action in the past. But because she doesn't want to be seen as "giving in" to Obama or DREAMers, she'd rather take drivers' licenses away from all immigrants, period. Brewer's actions are not only a direct attack on young people, but they are devastating for women in her state. Many undocumented immigrant women already don't report domestic abuse to law enforcement out of fear of deportation. It’s time to put an end to Gov. Brewer’s anti-immigrant campaign. As the signer of the nation's most extreme anti-immigrant law, Brewer has carved out her entire political career at the expense of the most vulnerable of our society. Arizona deserves better!

  • Rep. Latham: Grow the Middle Class
Congress has 5 days scheduled before the Sep. 30 budget deadline to avoid a government shutdown. But some Republicans won't even negotiate unless Obamacare is defunded — and they're using the deadline to gain leverage. We need Rep. Latham to prioritize expanding the middle class during the budget debate. Unless we act quickly, he may join with Republicans like Rep. Paul Ryan and support more cuts to education, healthcare, and other vital services.
