When I approached the Sgt. about getting assistance to protect me from my husband who had assaulted, tortured and was stalking me the officer offered me money and a place to live, citing a "personal interest" in me. He then refused to enforce my protective order when I called to report my husband HUNTING me. I was told I was "crying wolf".

In America, people who work hard should be able to afford basic necessities like groceries, rent, childcare and transportation. However, if you make minimum wage in Arizona, you have to work 85 hours PER WEEK, just to get by. Many low-wage workers have to go on public assistance, despite working full-time. This just isn't right, especially when their employers are mega-corporations, raking in billions of dollars each year in record profits. Fast food companies are some of the biggest culprits. While their workers make a mere $11,000 a YEAR, a fast food CEO makes an average of $25,000 PER DAY! Fast food workers all over the country are standing up to demand they be paid fairly for their hard work. Most Americans still believe that this is a country of opportunity, where those who put forth honest effort can build a good life for their family. Many of us have parents, grandparents or great grandparents who came here as immigrants and earned their citizenship through hard work and determination, while still managing to raise their families on a meager salary, learn an unfamiliar language and labor at difficult and often low paying jobs that no one else was willing to take. For many years, however, our country’s immigration system has been broken, creating barriers for new immigrants who want to work hard and earn their place as citizens. Meanwhile, those who don’t play by the rules have flourished, leading to increased crime and danger along our borders. Most Americans don’t begrudge others the right to work hard and succeed, but we all want our communities to be safe and for those who take advantage of American opportunity to earn it honestly. This summer, it looked like Congress might finally pass legislation that would solve many of our country’s immigration woes in keeping with the views and values of majority of Americans. The immigration reform bill passed in the Senate this June includes a pathway for undocumented immigrants to work hard and earn citizenship while increasing safety for our communities by strengthening border security. It is time for the U.S. House of Representatives to pass comprehensive immigration reform, like the Senate did in June. However, Republicans in the house have stalled and effectively killed the Senate bill to force this option off the table. Speaker of the House John Boehner has insisted since this Spring, before the Senate bill even passed, that this proposed legislation would never make it to the House of Representatives and he and his colleagues have made good on this promise. In the meantime, our system is still broken. We have no path for many otherwise honest, hard working immigrants to make things right legally, including many who have grown up in this country and lived most of their lives as Americans. Meanwhile, this broken system means that our communities are still unsafe, as those desperate to make a better life for their family continue to present an opportunity for profit to the drug smugglers, coyotes and criminals who pose a threat to our Southwestern borders. The good news is that we live in a Democracy with a lawmaking process that has checks and balances to protect the American People from grandstanding by a handful of legislators. By using a process called a discharge petition, members of the House of Representatives can gain support from their colleagues to force the legislation to the House floor for a vote. Unfortunately, while many House Democrats have voiced support for signing such a discharge petition, none have yet shown the leadership to actually introduce it. We need one brave soul to take the lead. A coalition of progressive and social justice groups including MoveOn.org, America's Voice, 18Million Rising, We Belong Together, and CREDO Action, have committed to mobilizing our combined 15 million members in support of a discharge petition on comprehensive immigration reform. We hope you will join us in urging Arizona Representative Raul Grijalva to take the courage and leadership his colleagues have not by introducing a discharge petition and making it possible to bring the Senate Immigration legislation to the House floor.

The village of Yarnell was devastated by wildfire on June 30, 2013. Half the town burned and 19 firefighters lost their lives. Charitable organizations showed immediate compassion with bottled water, food, sandbags, and volunteers to sift ash. But our own government has denied us funding to rebuild burned/damaged water lines--one of life's most basic necessities.

Responsible Homeowners like myself who have never been late on a mortgage payment have been waiting at least a year and a half since plans for HARP 3.0 were announced. With rising interest rates, refinancing with a conventional loan is now no longer possible. Refinancing with a FHA loan offers little relief and qualifying is difficult because homes must often appraise for higher than the market value. It is estimated that HARP 3.0 could potentially affect 7.5 million mortgages. Passing HARP 3.0 will free up the interest expense on millions of mortgages and move the economy and housing market forward. Passing HARP 3.0 should be a top priority. Let's end the logjam in Congress ASAP.

My mother, aunt and several friends are, or have been, residents at Warren Haven. Warren Haven is an excellent, compassionate, long term, sub-acute health care facility. It is currently in danger of being privatized and the Warren Haven Family Council is petitioning the Freeholder board to keep the facility public and non-profit.

An Associated Press story reported that oil companies have been fracking off our coasts for years and basically no one in California, including the California Coastal Commission, knew about it. What’s even more egregious, federal regulations exempt fracking wastewater from clean water laws, so oil companies have been dumping this toxic, chemical-laden wastewater right back into the ocean -- right in areas where blue and humpback whales congregate. We need the EPA and Department of the Interior to step in and protect the Pacific and its wildlife from dangerous fracking. The wastewater contains chemicals that are “toxins to fish larvae and crustaceans, bottom dwellers most at risk from drilling activities, according to government health disclosure documents detailing some of the fluids used off California's shore”. Seven California legislators just sent a letter to the EPA and Department of the Interior calling for new regulations for fracking in the seabed.

President Obama may choose Larry Summers to Chair the Federal Reserve Bank. This is a petition for members of the Harvard community. It is informing President Obama that we oppose the appointment of Larry Summers to this position. Please only sign this petition if you are a member of the Harvard community and indicate your affiliation. Please also note if you were a member of the Harvard community while Summers was President of Harvard (2001-2006). Summers was involved with many policies that resulted in the crash of 2008, including the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act. His sexism has created controversies for many years, including, most famously, for comments he made while President of Harvard; after a vote of no confidence from the Harvard faculty, he resigned his post. He is also known for being abrasive and aggressive, and these qualities would not be helpful in building consensus as Fed Chair. Janet Yellen, the woman who is currently Vice-Chair of Fed, is experienced, eminently qualified for the job, and would follow through on Ben Bernanke's policies
