• Burlington: It's time to sever our “sister-city” relationship with anti-gay Russian city, Yaroslavl
Burlington should send a clear message that violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens of Yaroslavl is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Russia's elected leaders are out of control—and we can't stand for it any longer. Russian law allows police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian, or “pro-gay” and detain them for up to 14 days. Russia's “gay propaganda” law makes any parents who tell their children that being gay is okay, any Pride parade organizer, any health official distributing information regarding safe sex between same-sex partners, and even judges and lawyers subject to arrest or fine. Already people are being arrested, beaten, intimidated, and more. Russia’s sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, has said that foreign nationals would be subject to this law.

  • Speaker Boehner: Give us our vote on citizenship
Recently, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) publicly condemned Rep. Steve King (R-IA) after he despicably claimed that DREAMers have "calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert." "What he said does not reflect the values of the American people or the Republican Party," Speaker Boehner said during a press conference. Yet only one month earlier, he allowed Rep. King a vote on his amendment to defund the deferred action program and leave DREAMers vulnerable to deportation. In fact, it's the only immigration-related measure to receive a vote in the House this year. Speaker John Boehner seems to be speaking out of both sides of his mouth. If he can give Rep. Steve King a vote on his hateful amendment to deport DREAMers, why can't he give us a vote on a path to citizenship? We need to tell Speaker Boehner that we deserve a vote on the path to citizenship in the House. While condemning Rep. King's comments was the right thing do to, it's simply not enough. We need a vote too. The House has gone on recess for a month and we know that we have the House members necessary to win a vote on a path to citizenship. Yet Speaker Boehner won't bring it to the floor, instead allowing Rep. King to sit in the driver's seat at the expense of millions of immigrants. It's time for real action. Speaker Boehner has stated in the past that "we need immigration reform.” But voting to deport DREAMers isn't the way to get there. Tell Speaker Boehner to give us our vote on the path to citizenship in the House now.

  • Stand with Detroit Workers
We can't let global financial interests destroy hardworking Americans' pensions, and the dominoes could start falling after Detroit's bankruptcy. If Michigan's pro-corporate governor and "emergency manager" succeed in cheating hardworking American workers out of their pensions, pro-corporate officials in towns and cities throughout the country are much more likely to try something similar. All eyes are on Detroit.

  • Help Protect Californians from Fracking
Help pass SB 4 (Pavley) through the California legislature. This bill will require oil companies to tell the public about fracking and other risky oil and gas drilling operations. Fracking and fracking related activities, have been linked to ground and surface water pollution, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, earthquakes, and property damage around the country, yet in California the practice is largely unregulated. There are no requirements for obtaining a permit, disclosing chemical or water use, or monitoring for groundwater pollution. This bill will promote the public's right to know and give us the information we need to keep fracking out of our communities. Transparency and information is an important first step in protecting our state, and our communities from the dangers of fracking. Key provisions of SB 4. This bill would require: • A comprehensive framework for fracking and well stimulation regulations. • A permit before well stimulation can occur. • Disclosure of identities and volumes of chemicals injected as part of any well stimulation. • Disclosure of the quantity and source of water used in well stimulation. • Advance notice to neighbors of proposed well stimulation projects. • Monitoring of groundwater quality, before and after well stimulation. • A state conducted scientific study on the risks of fracking, acid injection and other well stimulation processes. • Formal agreements between the Division of Oil Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR), the Air Resources Board, State Water Board, and other agencies to ensure accountability, transparency and regulatory cooperation.
