• Stop Fracking in California!
Fracking involves injecting massive amounts of water and toxic chemicals into the ground to reach otherwise inaccessible oil and which is an extreme process, with catastrophic results. Fracking threatens our water, our air, our farms, and our health—and contributes to global warming.2 2. "California's Fracked Up Oil: Nearly As Bad As Keystone XL?" • Stand Up to Bill Koch: Build Cape Wind Now!
For over a decade, Cape Wind’s promise of clean, renewable energy and new jobs for Massachusetts has been held captive by dirty energy-backed opposition. Enough is enough: Cape Wind can and should be built – but we have to stand together. Multi-billionaire dirty energy magnate Bill Koch – brother of Charles Koch and David Koch—has pumped millions into opposing Cape Wind. In his campaign against Cape Wind, Koch has used lobbyists, flimsy lawsuits, and funded a pseudo-environmental group to drag out the process of approving Cape Wind. So far, nothing has worked: Cape Wind has passed every federal and state environmental review and received all of its permits. But with billions at his disposal, Koch continues to try to “delay, delay, delay” Cape Wind – apparently in hopes that we’ll give up and quit. Koch insists that “getting alternative energy that’s going to save the earth is not consistent with what people want.” If that’s not the message you want deciding Cape Wind’s fate in Washington, tell your representatives in Congress to put an end to Bill Koch’s campaign of delay and support building Cape Wind now.

  • Stop Stupid Petitions!
Petitions about social issues like gun control or immigration policies I can understand, but where is the line drawn? I literally laugh out loud at some of the meaningless petitions on the web: Change the Use of the Word "Illegal" to "Undocumented," or Give Homeless Shelters Steel Silverware Instead of Plastic. Only petition things that actually matter, that really will make a difference, because petitions like these hurt your credibility more than they help your cause.

  • Rescind Fallo's raise
President of El Camino Community College Thomas Fallo has for the third time in his twenty five year presidency threatened to retire then been offered a raise to stay like a Cronyism would behave like. This amid many budget constraints and program budget cuts for students, whole programs and semesters done away with, no raise for faculty and staff for at least five years, many layoffs, and a gaggle of union busting behavior. Let me state Fallo’s salary was $277,000.00 raised to $313,000.00 with another $3,500.00a year in expenses. The President of the Compton campus makes only $188,000.00 for the exact same job and the exact same duties. Moreover the Board of Trustees voted on this 4 t o 1 raise right after going from Trustees at large to answer to the whole community to district which makes them far accountable to all of the constituents.

  • Right to Label GMO Food
As consumers, we have a right to know if our food has been genetically modified, and this should be labeled on our food. End of story. "A genetically engineered food is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA artificially altered in a laboratory by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria, in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is not found in nature, and is experimental. The correct scientific term is "transgenics," and is also often referred to as (GE) genetically engineered. The Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods Are Unclear. Unlike the strict safety evaluations required for the approval of new drugs, the safety of genetically engineered foods for human consumption is not adequately tested. There have been NO long-term studies conducted on the safety of genetically engineered foods on humans." From http://www.labelgmos.org/ Additionally, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on GMO's in more than 50 countries including Germany, UK, Spain, Denmark, France, China, Russia, Poland, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

  • Tell the FCC: Talk Radio is NOT Bonafide News!
America's broadcast airwaves belong to "We the People." Radio stations are licensed to use our airwaves if - and only if - they serve the public's best interest. That means giving an unbiased account of the news of the day, and during elections, affording both major political party's candidates and their supporters equal time. During the 2012 Scott Walker recall campaign in Wisconsin, Milwaukee AM radio station WTMJ used its local talk radio shows to exclusively promote Republican Governor Scott Walker and his supporters, while refusing time to his Democratic opponent and his supporters. Media Action Center documented and then tallied every minute of on air "promotion" of Walker and filed a challenge to WTMJ's license for failure to serve the public interest as defined by the FCC. Now, WTMJ's parent company, Journal Communications, is fighting back. Journal Communications owns 15 television stations and 35 radio stations in 12 states. They are arguing that talk radio show hosts may use our public airwaves to exclusively promote candidates of one party because the shows are the same as “bonafide news.” The bonafide news term refers to an exemption from the "equal time" rule that broadcast media gets when it is covering a candidate in a legitimate news situation, such as a public event or campaign stop, or when it is airing a documentary type program. Conservative Talk Radio have been using our publicly owned airwaves to push a one-sided political agenda. Now they are asking the FCC to legally define this one-sided rhetoric as "Bonafide news." If the FCC redefines editorial opinion as "news," it will sound the death knell for truth in journalism as we know it. A Pew study revealed that already, nearly a quarter of the population believes that talk radio is in fact "news." That's a scary statistic – and one we can't afford to let grow. Talk radio combines fact with fiction, making it impossible for listeners to discern which is which. It is irresponsible, it's manipulative, and it's a violation of the rules that govern our public airwaves. One thing it is not: news.

  • STUDENT LOAN DEFAULT CORRUPTION
I am an elderly person living on social security disability and have been as a result of a car accident back in May of 1997 that took me out of work from my job in law enforcement where I was employed for almost 24 years. I attempted at one point to go back to school (when around 1985-86). However, due to health problems, I was unable to complete the course (in advertising and computer design). I had to leave school. My initial student loan was not more than $2,500. Today, on social security disability, I am told that I owe the student loan educational people in excess of $17,000! Despite the fact that they have been deducting $151.00 from my disability check EACH MONTH, leaving me less than $800 to live on for the month, they called me this week and asked me how soon I can send in the balance of the loan which is in excess of $17,000! I am also a diabetic and cannot afford the types of food I need to eat to care for my health. I lost my husband in 2004, live alone and cannot meet my personal needs. I receive $16 per month in food stamps! This is a grave travesty in this supposedly richest country in the world. I reapplied for a forbearance, and was told that the fact that I am on disability and have been for some time is not enough of a reason for them to stop this monthly electronic deduction. I need proof from the medical profession that my disability is sure to result in death! I am 63 years of age and cannot take on gainful employment, and even if I could, where would I get 'gainful employment' at this age? I worked all of my life for this money. Because I had no dependents, very much was taken out of my pay. Why now is it possible for this to be happening that I cannot get access to money that I worked for! No one gave it to me. Is this why the checks went to automatic electronic deduction? So that they could have full control over the money we worked for and paid into the system. Have we no more control over the money we worked for? Is there no recourse for this in that they can take this money out now INDEFINITELY--leaving me not enough to live on!

  • Migrant Workers
This petition is about Migrant Workers and their low pay. We have made this petition to help migrant workers get paid more adequate to what they do. Their jobs are grueling and time consuming. Their hours are much longer than what the average person works, with less than an 8th of what they get paid.
