  • ESPN: No Layoffs!
After taking millions in tax payer money from the state to create jobs, ESPN is now planning layoffs. More than 100 employees, and maybe as many as 400, are slated to be let go from their Bristol, CT headquarters. This is unacceptable. ESPN took our money to create jobs, they cannot turnaround and fire employees instead. Tell ESPN not to let any of its workers go!

  • Federal Funding for Elementary School Tornado Shelters
On My 20, 2013 an EF-5 Tornado that was close to 1-1/2 mile wide and about 17 mile long, cut through the City of Moore and Southern Oklahoma City in OK. Two elementary schools were in the path and were flattened. Ten children (9 years and younger) were confirmed killed by collapsing walls in hallways. The federal government can take the lead in providing States with funding for underground shelters for such schools in the area known as 'Tornado Alley', frequented by tornadic activity (specifically 17 States identified as such).

  • Ban GMO
Negative impacts on GM foods: The use of genetically modified plants and animals has already become commonplace in today’s society without many people being aware of it. The lack of consumer consent in the choice to eat genetically modified foods creates an ethical dilemma. Safe for Consumption? As much as “70 percent” of food prepackaged in a normal grocery store contain genetically modified foods. Are they all safe?StarLink cornmodified corn that was found in stores, which were never intended for human consumption. It was designed specifically for pig feed.Flavr Savr tomatogenetically modified tomato that rot longer.but less resistant to pests and easily caught diseases, which made the crops even more costly to grow and thus higher price for consumers.Pharmaceuticalsas pollen spreads, genes from pharmaceutical plants have made it into the food supply.these drugged foods are more commonly being fed to animals that are raised to be slaughtered and consumed by humans.AllergensBT toxin, designed to kill pests that eat crops, caused allergies and other responses. Safety for environment Increase use of pesticides and herbicidesthe world’s largest supplier of genetically modified seed for crops is Monsanto, which happens to be one of the larger producers of pesticides and herbicides.roundup Ready Soy fields require an average 3x as much Roundup.Cross pollinationpollen from modified plants can spreads and will infect other plants, creating "superweeds" with insecticidal properties or herbicide-resistance.insects becoming resistant to the BT gene inserted into corn and cotton in order to kill off pests.in Canada, an organic crop field was contaminated by Monsato's genetically modified rapeseed. monsato's rapeseed farm the organic farmerimages taken from here Financial Impacts: $200 million was invested in creating Flavr Savr, and almost non of the investmet was able to be reclaimed.GM crops have cost the United States an estimated $12 billion in farm subsidies, lost sales and product recalls due to transgenic contaminationMassive failures in Bt Cotton up to 100% in India. Testing, testing.. Very little testing has been done on GM foods.genetic engineering is a new field, and long term results are unclearfunding only given to tests which show positive results.

  • Stop The Teen Tan Ban in Massachusetts
Massachusetts currently has a parental consent law in place for those who want their teens to tan. Many teens tan before vacations to avoid sunburn, for acne, psoriases, eczyma, depression, etc. There is a lot of scientific data supporting the health benefits of moderate gradual tanning. The government should not ban something that MIGHT or COULD be harmful.

  • Wildlife and Habitat Restoration in our National Forests and Public Lands
The "multiple use" concept in our National Forests and other public lands has left our natural wildlife and habitats behind again. Too much motorized access for timber, mining, recreation and unrestricted hunting and trapping have kept habitat, especially wetland habitat, from adequate protection and recovery. In particular, active beaver-managed wetlands are known to provide multiple benefits for all species including threatened and endangered species of both plants and animals. The cyclic nature of undisturbed beaver-created openings in the forest are far more productive and effective than "micro-managed" attempts to create habitat artifically with "wildlife openings" that are regularly mowed or burned, "beneficial" forest clear-cuts or artificial dams that are expensive and require maintenance. These natural wetlands also improve all aspects of our regions' hydrology including flood mitigation, drought relief, pollution and sediment reduction and forest fire suppression and yet have far too little protection in our ever-expanding world of roads, trails and other development. Goal: up to at least 10% of our publicly owned natural (relatively un-altered/undeveloped) landscapes which would also increase habitat and ecosystem continuity. This would not mandate the elimination of trails or even roads or other access but would require the above protections to be 1st priority and uncompromised to the greatest (peer-reviewed) extent practicable.
