  • Women's Reproductive Rights
My petition is about women having the ultimate say in what is done to their bodies, not men. It is a woman's body and she should have the right to make her own decisions. Right now, women are being treated as slaves when it comes to abortion, or any other rights she has over her body.

  • Now is the time to expand Social Security.
The American people know that our Social Security system works, and during the economic collapse of 2008 they saw that while their home equity, 401k’s and savings were devastated, Social Security was the one source of retirement security that people could rely on. With so much uncertainty about the future, we will rely more than ever on our Social Security benefits. That’s why now is the time to build upon the one retirement security system that we know we can count on. We can expand Social Security benefits. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) has a proposal that will do just that: The Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013. According to Senator Harkin's office, The Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013 (S. 567) would: • Strengthen Benefits by Reforming the Social Security Benefit Formula: To improve benefits for current and future Social Security beneficiaries, the Act changes the method by which the Social Security Administration calculates Social Security benefits. This change will boost benefits for all Social Security beneficiaries by approximately $70 per month, but is targeted to help those in the low and middle of the income distribution, for whom Social Security has become an ever greater share of their retirement income. • Ensure that Cost of Living Adjustments Adequately Reflect the Living Expenses of Retirees: The Act changes the way the Social Security Administration calculates the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). To ensure that benefits better reflect cost increases facing seniors, future COLAs will be based on the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E). Making this change to Social Security is expected to result in higher COLAs, ensuring that seniors are able to better keep up with the rising costs of essential items, like health care. • Improve the Long Term Financial Condition of the Trust Fund: Social Security is not in crisis, but does face a long-term deficit. To help extend the life of the trust fund the Act phases out the current taxable cap of $113,700 so that payroll taxes apply fairly to every dollar of wages. Combined, these changes will increase benefits for current and future beneficiaries while making Social Security stronger for future generations by extending the life of the Trust Fund through 2049. By making millionaires and billionaires pay the same rate as the rest of our do, we can expand Social Security for all Americans. That is what we must do. We need every single member of Congress to hear from their constituents. Tell them you are sick and tired of these conversations about how much to cut from our earned benefits, tell them now is the time to expand Social Security. Tell them to sponsor The Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013 (S. 567) or its companion in the House.

  • Defend science-based food regulation
The most fundamental goal of society is to produce safe, affordable, sustainable food. The challenges to this are great and growing with the human population, climate change, and loss of farmland. An amalgam of corporate and ideological interests oppose biotechnology despite its spotless safety record, remarkable benefits to the environment, and its contributions to keeping food affordable. Working to the benefit of these special interests, legislators are trying to rewrite FDA regulations so that warning labels must be placed on food made from crops improved using biotechnology, even if the food contents are indistinguishable from food made without biotechnology.

  • Arkansas Honor Your Commitments to Graduates
Due to cuts in higher education, many students, including my daughter, may be notified on July 1 that their 2013-2014 scholarships/grants are not going to be honored by the state of Arkansas. By now many students have committed to colleges and graduate schools based upon those awards and will have to seek alternative funding. Unfortunately, on that very same day, July 1, student loan interest rates will increase from 3.5% to 6.8%.

  • Vote Incumbents Out of Office
I'm sure you are all aware Congress has a 79% disapproval rating. It seems our members of Congress think running our country is a joke or a game. None of them are putting our Country ahead of their Party. Since they have no intention to do what's best for our Country, I would like to start a movement to "vote all incumbents out of office starting in 2014." They need to get a loud and clear message from the people that the status-quo is no longer acceptable. They were elected to do their job, and if they choose not to, then they need to go! Enough is enough!

Sign our petition asking the California Legislature to vote for the plastic bag ban bill (SB 405) authored by Senator Alex Padilla. Each year Californians use more than 14 billion single-use plastic bags. They are blight on our communities, fill our landfills, clog inland waterways, litter our beaches and mountains, and kill thousands of fish, marine mammals and seabirds. Join our coalition of environmental and business groups and sign the petition today! Supporters include: Sierra Club, NRDC, Surfrider, Clean Water Action, Heal the Bay, Planning & Conservation League and Californians Against Waste.

  • Berkeley needs to be #1 in Pedestrian Safety
The city of Berkeley is number one in pedestrian deaths and injuries for cities its size in the state of California. Berkeley's policy of not citing, ticketing, and referring for prosecution even the most egregious cases had led to a free-for-all where drivers do not respect even the the most fundamental rights of pedestrians. Children, the elderly, and disabled people are taking the brunt of this brutality on our streets, many times even though the pedestrian is obeying every law. The police, the city and the DA's office do nothing.

  • Tell Food and Retail CEOs: Your Workers Shouldn't Have To Rely On Food Stamps
Fast food and retail workers in Milwaukee are striking. Together we're launching the Raise up MKE campaign and standing up to the enormous corporations we work for to make sure they get a simple message: Workers like us should be paid a fair wage that lets us make ends meet. Most of us make $7.25 an hour – or just barely more. That means our average salary is less than $19,000 per year, which just isn’t enough to cover basic needs like rent, food, health care, transportation, and often times a family to support. A lot of us are forced to rely on public assistance to make ends meet. Fast food and retail outlets are the new factory floors, and like thousands of workers before us, we are organizing to demand better pay and conditions. Paying fast food and retail workers a livable wage will not only help us support our families, but it will also help strengthen Milwaukee's entire economy. When we’re paid a fair wage, we’ll have money to buy the everyday items we need, keeping the money in our community and making our neighborhoods safer. Here in America, everyone who works hard should be able to afford basic necessities like groceries, rent, and transportation for themselves and their families. Stand with Milwaukee's fast food and retail workers in demanding they get the respect -- and living wage -- they deserve.

All Americans are affected by the HealthCare bill - I personally think it has some very good things in it...Congress can tweak it - but not cancel it...if it's good enough for the common taxpayer, it's good enough for Congress...they are scheduled to get on this healthcare in 2014....now you know why they are trying to cancel the bill! Tweak it and make it better for everyone!
