We, the parents of 150, categorically oppose the proposed closure of P.S. 150 -The proposed closing will worsen, not improve the overcrowding situation downtown -The solution for the overcrowding situation is to BUILD schools not CLOSE schools downtown -We are in the process of reaching out to our elected officials to enlist their support -This is an issue for all of downtown families

  • "Increase minimum wage"
Minimum wage needs to increase, we live in the richest nation and many of us our living paycheck to paycheck. The politicians that we vote into office are against an increase in the minimum wage requirement. Our hard earned tax dollars that our government take out of our paycheck insure that the politicians we have elected earns more than minimum wage. But their against hard working Americans doesn't have to struggle with paying bills and getting out of dept.

  • Chicago Area Residents & Business owners opposed to Circle interchange flyover ramp
Chicago's West Loop and Greektown Neighborhood is home to families and businesses, who enjoy a dynamic and rapidly growing urban environment. The West Loop is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Chicago. It is home to thriving restaurants, shops, galleries, and spacious residential lofts. The West Loop is a vibrant community with major interstate highways to the east and south of us. Walking south down Halsted from Greektown, you might not even notice the thousands of cars passing by just yards away, down below on the Eisenhower expressway. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has proposed the construction of a major “flyover”, or overpass, to be built over Halsted Street and I-290... connecting the northbound Kennedy to the westbound Eisenhower. It’s part of IDOT’s massive 4.5-year-long project to rebuild the Circle Interchange and rebuild the aging street bridges. This proposed flyover ramp will feature two 12’ lanes and two 10’ shoulders, plus, the necessary guardrails and infrastructure required to handle 40,000 cars a day. It will be massive. We oppose the inclusion of the flyover ramp for a variety of reasons. This flyover ramp will negatively impact West Loop and Greektown business owners, Halsted Street pedestrians, CTA Blue Line commuters, property owners, and residents. Aside from the 4.5-year construction timeline, the result will be an eyesore that not only separates the West Loop and Greektown neighborhoods from our neighbors to the south, like UIC; it will become a dark and dangerous blight to a thriving neighborhood. Noise Traffic noise will increase because the bypass ramp will come over the top of Halsted Street (just south of Van Buren) instead of going under the road. Noise increases when traffic is doubled (two lanes instead of one lane), there is a steep slope, and speed is increased. Flyover roads also broadcast noise over greater distances. Dirt/Pollution Building the ramp over Halsted Street will increase the amount of dirt and particulate pollutants (from diesel fuel combustion, materials produced by tire, brake and road wear, and dust) that will accumulate on the sidewalks and street in the immediate area. Overpass structures create a darker and dirtier environment for pedestrians. This ramp will also be located outside the Halsted Street Blue Line station where people need to wait for buses and enter/exit the station. Safety/Walk Ability Overpass structures create a darker and dirtier environment. Threatening to pedestrians. This ramp will also be located outside the Halsted Street Blue Line station where people need to wait for buses and enter/exit the station. Separation of communities The flyover structure will be located at the south end of Greektown and creates a separation from the UIC neighborhood. It will greatly impact the restaurants and businesses that are currently thriving in a resurgent Greektown.

  • Correct income inequality in 10 years
My petition wants the president to lead in his second term and the senate and congress to formulate a plan to return the wealth distribution pie back to the great 1950's. It is about increasing wages and passing laws that give working people a fair share of America's wealth. Correcting income inequality is crucial to a true democratic society.

  • Women's rights in the workforce
Dear The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, We are pleased to present you with this petition affirming one simple statement: "Women enjoy most of the freedoms today that men enjoy, and have joined the American work force in droves to work as doctors, lawyers, teachers, designers, truck drivers and in many other professions. Discrimination against women still exists in various forms, particularly in the workplace. Women should know their rights as U.S. workers and take responsibility for helping to stop rights violations in the workplace Women have worked in some capacity in the U.S. since its inception, but only in menial jobs for very low pay. During World War I, women entered the work force in higher numbers due to the shortage of men. It wasn’t until World War II that they went to work in the armed forces and design. During this period, women took positions formerly open only to men; 7 million women entered the workforce, 2 million of those in heavy industry. They still had no formal workplace rights until the passage of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act states that employers may not discriminate against people on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.Title VII makes it illegal for employers to exclude qualified women from any available position. Employers would often hire less qualified men for positions to which women had applied. This law empowers women to sue if they feel a potential employer has excluded them from a position based on gender. President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, which states that employers must pay women the same amount they would pay a man in the same position. In the past, companies paid women far less than their male counterparts for the same position. Women can sue their employers if they can prove that a male in the same position earns higher wages. Both of these laws significantly increase the status of women in the workforce. Women’s rights in the workplace include many facets, such as the right to work if pregnant. An employer cannot exclude a woman from a position due to pregnancy as long as she can perform satisfactorily. Employers cannot refuse to hire any person due to marital status, gender or age. In addition, an employee of any company where a woman works may not sexually harass the woman in any way. This includes a hostile work environment where the woman must endure sexual comments, touching or materials, as well as unwanted sexual advances that put her in fear of losing her job if she does not comply. Women should report all advances of this sort to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or a supervisor.Because of workplace rights, women enjoy freedom to work in almost any position they choose. They join the armed forces, work as cab drivers, own businesses and become executives in large corporations. As the financial status of women increases, so does the welfare of their families, children and the nation.According to Sexual Harassment Support, a nonprofit support group for victims of sexual harassment, only 5 percent to 15 percent of victims of workplace sexual harassment report these violations to their employers or proper authorities for fear of ridicule, losing their jobs or not being believed. All victims of sexual harassment should seriously consider reporting it. Taking this step protects America’s workforce from workplace rights violations." Attached is a list of individuals who have added their names to this petition, as well as additional comments written by the petition signers themselves. Sincerely, Treanakay Bostwick

  • Protect California's Groundwater!
We strongly urge Assemblyman Brian Dahle to support a ban on fracking in California. The BLM has already auctioned off 1,750 sq.miles for fracking and plans to auction off even more this May. Fracking has contaminated drinking water with extremely toxic chemicals all over the U.S., causing illness in humans and livestock, and rendering public and private land uninhabitable. Protect California's groundwater!
