  • Governor Pence: Save Indiana
Indiana has a 8.6% unemployment rate and adding to that are people being released from prison and needing jobs. Republicans need to stop this craziness and tea-party extreme right mentally-ill behavior and reduce their own salaries to minimum wage public workers for 1 year and see how far they could live. People need jobs and to be paid a higher, at least, minimum wage of $9.00 per hour.

  • Amend the Washington Discover Pass for Rafters
Rafters entering the river system in Idaho or Oregon coming out at Heller Bar after being on the water several days should not have to be subjected to the expensive parking fee at Heller Bar. There should be fee, I agree, but the absence of pay phones, no cell service or wifi, no security and the lack of clean, stocked restrooms there, make the high fee ridiculous. The annual fee is 35.00, and river rafting can be a dangerous sport. Please reexamine this fee for out of state folks that DO NOT WANT the annual pass but need to have their cars delivered earlier JUST IN CASE they need to come out early.

  • Protect Low Income and Middle Income Americans
Nevadans need to support all U.S. Senators; U.S. House of Representatives; President Barach Obama; all Nevada State legislature members that support a balanced budget in Nevada and in the U.S. Congress that protects low and middle income families; senior citizens; disabled people; and children! They need to protect Medicare; Medicaid; Food Stamps; WIC; Headstart; Student Loans; Veterans benefits; HUD low income housing; job training; infrastructure investment in our highways, bridges, roads, schools, teachers, policeman, and fireman. This sounds like a tall order but there are billions of dollars that can be saved and used to pay for the above benefits by closing tax loopholes on the wealthiest Americans and Corporations. All businesses sending jobs out of America should have their profits taxed higher than businesses that keep jobs in America! My husband and I live in HUD low income Senior housing in Henderson, Nevada. We live on my Clark County, Nevada PERS pension and our Social Security benefits. My husband is a Vietnam Veteran. I am on Medicare and Medicaid and Food Stamps. We need to take care of our most vulnerable Americans; not the wealthiest Americans and Corporations! Ed and Lois Denaut, Henderson, Nevada

  • Sen. McConnell: Support immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship
Because our immigration system is broken, there are currently 11 million immigrants living in the US with no way of becoming citizens. Most of these immigrants have lived in this country for more than a decade and have come to America to seek a better life for their families. They are Americans-in-waiting who are ready to fulfill the requirements of our citizenship process - to study English, pay taxes, maintain a good record and be of good moral character. Senator McConnell is the leader of Senate Republicans and he will have tremendous power in moving or blocking immigration reform. Recently, Senator Rand Paul said that he supports a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants currently living in the United State without papers -- but so far we have heard nothing from Senator McConnell. We need Senator Mitch McConnell to support legislation with a pathway to citizenship for these 11 million people. Instead of focusing only on the border, we need a new approach that is better for families and makes more economic sense. Tell Sen. McConnell to follow Rand Paul’s example and support immigration reform that creates a pathway to citizenship.

  • A Cameron Village Vicinity Plan
Raleigh's 2030 goals sustainable growth call for less sprawl and more compact, walkable growth in redevelopment areas. But this plan can only work if nearby neighborhoods are protected from the density impacts of increased car congestion and the bulk of larger construction. Mitigating these impacts in an area where road widening is constrained by stable neighborhoods will require a predictable plan for (1) contextual infill, (2) upgraded infrastructure and (3) improved mobility options that make it easier accomplish daily activities without driving. Given the high market demand in the Cameron Village Shopping Center area for more compact, walkable development in accordance with Raleigh's sustainable growth goals, the residents, land owners and business owners in the Cameron Village area call on the Raleigh City Council to initiate a detailed plan for sustainable redevelopment and mobility, updating and extending the Vision and Action Items of the Wade-Oberlin Small Area Plan. A Cameron Village Vicinity Plan would: 1. include design concepts for street changes that improve network efficiency and emphasize more mobility options for pedestrian, bicycle and transit access within and beyond the vicinity, 2. apply contextual design elements of the Comprehensive Plan and UDO (both adopted since the Wade-Oberlin Plan) to provide a more predictable blueprint for sustainable redevelopment in the area, and 3. specify near-term and long-term improvements and costs for infrastructure, streetscapes and enhanced transit operations.

  • CVS: Don't Require Employees to Disclose Personal Health Info or Face a $600 Penalty
According to news reports, CVS Caremark informed employees this week that they must disclose personal health information or pay a $600 annual penalty. While we understand the need to control the rising cost of healthcare, we feel strongly that this approach by CVS breaches the privacy rights of workers and sets a frightening precedent for other employers to follow suit. CVS employees are being required to show up to a doctor for an annual WebMD Wellness Review and submit to tests for blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass and body weight. The CVS memo to employees also states, “Going forward, you'll be expected not just to know your numbers - but also to take action to manage them." Is CVS suggesting that it will require employees to diet? Or take up running? Many employers are focused on encouraging their workers to stay healthy through incentives and wellness programs. But requiring employees to disclose personal health data crosses a line when it comes to privacy rights. Dr. Deborah Peel of Patient Privacy Rights told ABC News, “This [policy] is about as coercive and blunt as I’ve ever seen." We agree, and that's why we're calling on CVS to respect their employees' right to privacy. Don't penalize workers for wanting to keep their health records private. There are far better ways to help employees get fit & stay healthy.
