Representatives Alan Grayson and Mark Takano released a letter to President Obama promising to "vote against any and every cut to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security benefits." Within 2 days, the letter had more than a dozen cosigners, but to date, Rep. Charles Rangel has not signed on. We want to know definitively that Rep. Rangel will stand up against Republican efforts to cut the social safety net.

The proposed Republican map splits up communities, diluting their voting power. It carves out absurdly-shaped, gerrymandered districts for political gain, at the expense of minority voters and long-standing communities. It creates districts that have few interests in common, such as Elmont with Inwood and Bethpage with Garden City. It decimates many tight-knit communities by splitting them into as many as five different districts, such as Rockville Centre, the Five Towns, Manhasset, New Hyde Park, Garden City, Roslyn, East Meadow, Hicksville, Merrick, and Westbury. Hundreds of residents have made it abundantly clear by their statements at public meetings that they oppose this map, which unnecessarily moves nearly 350,000 voters to other districts! We urge our legislators to vote NO on the proposed map. The people of Nassau County want a FAIR map that maintains communities of interest; we deserve no less!

Whether someone has previously worked for the Government, whatever they have earned in the private sector should qualify them for that much social security.

My 28 year old son has been on disability for 10 years. He has a working wife and a six year old daughter. Without Social Security disability and Medicaid, he would have to live with his wife's family. I have been on disability since 2008. I am 62 years old. I too rely on disability plus Medicare. Cutting these essential programs will cause many people in our country to become homeless. Why did I work for 33 years only to have the promise of Social Security yanked away? Why did all of us believe in the system? These are essential social programs that should be strengthened, not reduced. Keep the social programs in place as they exist today at least and as promised.

The Grayson-Takano letter asks Congressmen to pledge to vote against any and every cut to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security benefits. Presidents and past Congresses have borrowed from the Social Security Fund with promises of returning the money to it. To date, instead of living up to their promises, they are now trying to cut benefits that seniors paid into with confidence. The pillaging of this fund is what has caused it to be running out of money, not increased costs and more seniors living longer. Now benefits are to be cut because the fund was misused to balance our country's budgets instead of its intended use.

I am a breast cancer survivor, who has been tremendously blessed by the assistant that the service of Medicaid had given myself, while endeavoring to fight and battle the deadly disease. The best interest and well being of our People as a Nation; should be at the forefront of each life changing decisions that Congress persons choose to display, therefore, let us allow this to be considered urgent and top priority and know that these cuts must be stopped.
