  • Petition to Keep Congress Square Park Public
For the past year, the four councilors of the Housing and Community Development Committee (HCDC) have been hearing proposals from Rockbridge Capitol LLC, a national investment corporation specializing in renovating and then reselling hotels for a return on their investment. Rockbridge has offered two proposals to build upon Congress Square Park, both of which have been rejected. A third proposal has been promised to the HCDC since August of 2012 and has yet to materialize. Meanwhile the city-formed committee, the Congress Square Redesign Study Group (CSRSG) has been waiting in the wings to continue on with its work to revitalize the park. The goal of this petition is to prove public support for keeping Congress Square Park a public park. This proof will be presented to the HDCD to persuade them to drop the negotiations with Rockbridge and let the CSRSG continue on with the redesign on the park. Congress Square Park is the only public park in Portland's downtown arts district. The city's own vision plan refers to it as "the Heart of the Arts district". Never in the history of Portland have we sold one of our public parks. Let's not start now.

  • Jewish "leaders" don't speak for me
Self-styled American Jewish leaders don't speak for me or the vast majority of American Jews. Stop giving them a platform to behave as arbiters of Jewish values, acceptable discourse about Israel or anti-Semitism.

  • You're right Mr. President, we need election reform now
In his State of the Union Address President Obama said "When any American -- no matter where they live or what their party -- are denied that right because they can't wait for five or six or seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals." He's right. We need reforms. People like 102 year-old Desiline Victor shouldn't have to wait another year for change to come. Please sign this petition thanking President Obama and our Massachusetts State Legislative Leadership (who have also called for change) and urge them to make 2013 the year of election modernization.

  • Fracturing
100% no Fracturing zone in Washington state . It use's to much of our natural resources,(Water 1 million gallons a day). The chemicals used to mix in and the residuals that come out of the fracturing process can affect our drinking water be it underground or surface water and possibly depleting our aquifer. Polluted water leaves our people with long and short term health issues and expenditures, that the state of washington with have to cover. The people of Pennsylvania and Canada who are exposed to fracturing chemicals through well water and food supplies(cattle, sheep and crops ) are affected by the toxicity of the chemicals added to the soil and local water supply. Fracturing companies are out for profit and are not concerned with the long or short term effects of the waste product that they produce by the fracturing process and will claim to recapture the water that returns to the surface, but don't have the ability to clean either captured surface water nor the water left in the soil, to its original pure form it began with.

  • Raise the Minimum Wage
Passing legislation now to raise the minimum wage to $10/hr by 2015 is not only necessary, but long-past warranted. Many Americans left behind in the wake of corporate greed have been left no alternative than to accept positions with organizations that only pay minimum wage, no matter what skills or experience the employee brings. That has had the effect of throwing millions of workers into poverty. In the richest country in the world, where corporate profits and CEO compensations have never been higher, that has a stock-market that has come roaring back, to have millions of working families living in poverty is a travesty. Please, join me in telling our representatives that this is no longer acceptable and the minimum wage must be increased to allow our fellow citizens the simple luxuries of food and roofs over their heads.

  • Save Hoquarton Slough/Front Street
Most are not aware that Tillamook PUD's proposed Front Street alignment for the portion of its new 115Kv electric transmission line designed to serve Oceanside will run right down Front Street. The alignment will preclude new development and redevelopment in this most historic part of the city. It will also curtail current employment growth as well as new job opportunities, devalue property and be a potential health risk.
