  • Repeal Asset Protections for Individuals Found Guilty of Fraud
Several years ago, after having purchased a small business after engaging in all due diligence recommended by my attorney and accountant, I nonetheless lost approximately half a million dollars – my home and all my savings – due to what five attorneys who reviewed my case confirmed was clearly a case of fraud that I would almost certainly have won in a court of law. I could not prosecute, however, because I no longer had the money to pay an attorney, and no one would take the case on contingency because the numerous asset protection laws currently in place for those convicted usually allow very little if any part of a monetary judgment to actually be collectible. I am now a mid-50s single parent living paycheck to paycheck in a poor economy – no more home, retirement fund or college fund for my child - and I am far from the only individual who has experienced this type of loss with no practical recourse.

  • Why are we afraid of governing?
Why are we afraid to tax the rich equally and why are we afraid to our war funding? I am a Grand Rapids Dominican Sister from Michigan, am retired and see families struggling. I live on fixed income and am grateful for my help from social services. Why should some people be shut out from this help. There are so many why's that people are floating around. We have lost hope in our government. Taking recesses from your jobs, is not a noble thing to do. What are your reasons. When I was working, I did not take recesses, nor should you. Sister Joan Alflen

  • End abuse of Betta fish at PetSmart
Bettas are intelligent and sensitive fish that are cruelly confined in tiny cups by most stores who sell them. The leading pet store chain PetSmart receives many complaints about its cruel treatment of these fish, but continues to brush them off with misleading statements that these tiny cups are 'comfortable' and 'safe' habitats. Besides trapping the fish in an undersized space, the presentation of Bettas in this manner misleads customers into thinking that tiny spaces are acceptable for Bettas. They are not. The wholesale mistreatment of these innocent creatures by PetSmart must stop.

  • Just Don't Do It
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and PhD student in Health Psychology. My two siblings killed themselves in 1989 and 1993. I want mandatory mental health education and medication side effect training for parents and teachers.I am tired of seeing adults suffer because since they were kids they have been victims of misdiagnosis and over-medication- especially those diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I am tired of seeing kids not graduate from high school because they are getting high everyday before school and parents are not being held responsible. I want funding for my "Just Don't Do It" (justdontdoit.us) campagne so that I can teach people what to ask their doctors and DEMAND that suicide prevention be a TOP priority when going to school.

  • Hindu Voices for VAWA: Standing United Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse
Join “Hindu Voices for VAWA: Standing United Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse”, a campaign by Hindu American Seva Communities (HASC) to mobilize American Hindus to urge Congress to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Our tradition worships the divine feminine aspects (God). Let us honor women and bring the dharmic social justice voice to the forefront. We urge you to sign the petition to support VAWA. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is our nation's most effective tool in addressing and preventing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. With 1 in 4 women experiencing severe physical violence by an intimate partner and nearly 1 in 5 women being raped in her lifetime in the United States alone, the reauthorization of VAWA is needed now more than ever. Recently, the Senate passed a strong bipartisan and inclusive VAWA reauthorization bill. It’s now up to the House to pass an equally robust version of VAWA quickly. Background: Initially passed in 1994, VAWA was written to protect women against domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. VAWA provides the law enforcement officials efficient and effective support in responding to crimes such as these. VAWA brings awareness to the serious endemic of domestic and sexual abuse and promotes efforts to end such violence. VAWA programs are administered by the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services and give law enforcement, prosecutors and judges the tools they need to hold offenders accountable and keep communities safe while supporting victims. In 2012 the 112th Congress stalled and did not vote to reauthorize VAWA for another five years the Senate version that gives extra provision to protect the immigrant, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), and Native American communities. “Hindu Voices for VAWA: Standing United Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse” is a project of Hindu American Seva Communities (HASC) (aka Hindu American Seva Charities), an independently registered not-for-profit organization. Hindu American Seva Charities (HASC) is a progressive American organization advancing seva (community service), interfaith collaboration, pluralism, social justice and sustainable civic engagement to ignite grassroots social change and build healthy communities and coalitions while strengthening our places of worship. Through education and policy changes it seeks to bridge the gap between US government and Hindu and Dharmic people and places of worship. • Ex-offenders Right to work with youth
This petition is about ex-offenders wanting to join other organizations who are working with our youth, and recieving contracts or grants to provide services. I have been turned down by organizations to work with their youth because this law is in place. I have offended in over 20 years; I have a organization that's been working with youth and adults that have drug problems or who are in gangs for 15 years. Even though we are known for work and agencies and organizations call on us all the time, we are still limited in our work with those organizations. This law needs to be changed!
