• Support STEAM
This petition hopes to gain support and momentum for a STEAM-based learning approach into the core curriculum by including the "A" for "arts" into the present standard of STEM. As an artist educator, I witness innovation that grows from creative thinking and making processes, incorporating all aspects of science, math, and technology through authentic inspired problem solving methods. The Congressional STEAM Caucus is a giant step toward creating meaningful educational practice that leads to inspired and innovative minds.

  • Investigation into the Iraq Invasion
America lost about 4600 troops, sustained over 100,000 wounded and amassed a debt estimated at between 1 and 3 trillion dollars. Americans are now being tasked with paying for these costs that contributed to the deficit that the current Congress seeks to reduce.

  • Support the Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act
I had a kidney transplant in 2012. The current Medicare coverage, for assisting with anti-rejection meds, is limited to 36 months after the transplant. People without private medical coverage will generally not be able to afford the meds ($1500-3000 per month) after the Medicare coverage ends in 36 months, and will lose their new kidney, end up on dialysis, and back on Medicare to cover the higher cost of dialysis.

  • Congress: Don't Stamp Out The Post Office!
A Republican effort in Congress created the US Post Office's financial crisis in an effort to destroy it and subsequently privatize it. In 2006, Congress required the Postal Service to “pre-fund 75 years’ worth of future retiree health benefits over a 10-year period.” No other government agency has this artificial financial burden and this is mainly responsible for the USPS's financial troubles. They are required by law to fund benefits today for future employees who aren't even born yet! Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has proven too weak to stand up to Congress and is planning to eliminate Saturday service which is the first step in the downward spiral leading to the elimination of the Post Office entirely. Congress will only act if pressured by the people who elect them into office.

  • Gov. Shumlin: Support tax on sugar sweetened beverages
Beverages with added sugar/corn syrup such as soda are a serious public health issue, resulting in obesity, poor nutrition and tooth decay. A tax on them would discourage their consumption, especially among lower-income individuals and families. It is not a regressive tax as no one is forced to pay it, and public health will improve if people choose to avoid the tax by not buying these beverages.

  • Football Stadium to be Named After Private Prison Corporation
The United States incarcerates more people, by all measures, than any other country in the world. State correctional systems and for-profit prisons create financial incentives for local sheriff and police departments to keep prisons full, and the economic and sociological impact of having 2.2 million men and women behind bars is profound. The GEO Group, which runs a network of private prisons, is about to become the namesake of Florida Atlantic University's football stadium. The GEO Group should be prevented from advertising their business this way.
