If Congress fails to reach agreement on the spending part of the so-called "fiscal cliff" negotiations by late February 2013, private universities such as Princeton, MIT, JHU, and others will face significant losses in federal research funding due to sequestration. This is a serious problem, for in fiscal year 2011, almost 75% of Princeton University's, 72% of Johns Hopkins Medicine's, and 71% of MIT's sponsored research funding came from government sources. Scientific research is the driving force behind today's technology-based economy; significant budget cuts to research institutions will affect everyone. For instance, scientific research at MIT has allowed for discoveries ranging from the first chemical synthesis of penicillin to an invention that duplicates the biological plant process of photosynthesis. Scientific research conducted at Johns Hopkins University has elucidated many cellular and biochemical mechanisms important for understanding human development and disease. Meanwhile, very recent scientific research at Princeton ranged from progress in particle physics, crucial to last summer's discovery of the long-sought Higgs boson at CERN, to finding a potential new chemotherapeutic approach for treating cancers. Most of this was possible to achieve through funding provided by federal agencies. Sequestration will have dire consequences for the future of scientific research at private institutions. Each American has been affected by mental illness either directly or indirectly. Our impact will soon be devastating if federal funds are cut and state funds are further cut.

I urge you to act now to prevent mandatory, across-the-board cuts to vital mental health research, services and supports from going into effect on January 2, 2013. Reductions of 8.4 percent to important programs funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Department of Education would have a devastating impact on people living with mental illness and other disabilities.

I am so frustrated that every single thing I buy at the grocery store comes wrapped in non-biodegradable plastic materials that are harmful for the environment. I want a world where we don't damage the planet with every purchase we make.

Let's address the real problem: mental illness causes almost every violent disaster like the shootings in Newtown, Conn And until we make treatment available to those who need it, these tragic disasters will continue. We all have seen what happens when we don't. In fact, often the aggressor is already known for previous violent behavior.   Helping to stem violent disasters has somehow become bogged down in an argument about gun control. That argument will probably continue for years, but it is unlikely to help right now. Instead we need immediate care for those with serious mental issues, because not treating mental illness has become a national issue.    Treatment and drugs for mental illness are often prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, patients with serious mental illnesses are often those who can least afford it. Worst of all, insurance carriers often exclude serious mental health illness from adequate and effective coverage. We need an aggressive plan to treat those with serious mental health issues, including requiring insurance carriers to cover treatment and medication, especially in cases with the potential for violence.    While this would certainly help those individuals who are seriously mentally ill, the collective impact would make our whole country a safer place to live

I am an Illinois teacher. My pension money has been recklessly mismanaged by Illinois legislators that don't want to repay what they borrowed and instead want to pass the burden back onto school districts and taxpayers. I propose we make them forfeit their pensions to repay Illinois teacher pensions and show accountability for their reckless spending habits and irresponsible mismanagement of money that was not rightfully theirs to spend.

Walmart intentionally and purposefully underpays their employees, then runs classes on how they can apply for benefits reserved for those living in poverty. Walmart is using taxpayer money to fund healthcare for their employees. In effect, Walmart is stealing from the American public, and holding their employees hostage.
