This effort violates the rights of over 100,000 felons who have served their sentence and have earned the right to voter restoration. It also disenfranchises over 5 million Florida voters who voted YES on restoration of these rights!! After multiple delays by DeSantis, in October 2019, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle ruled that the state CANNOT deny the right to vote to someone who is "genuinely unable to pay". He cemented his ruling in May 2020 and laid out a process for the state to use in determining felons' voting eligibility, rejecting an attempt by DeSantis to put the ruling on hold. Instead DeSantis made a rare request for an appeal review by the full court. Plantiffs requesting dismissal of this lawsuit include the ACLU, the Campaign Legal Center, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, all who had requested the 11th Circuit turn down DeSantis' request for the full court, stating that the case should be expedited so potential voters could participate in Florida's August 18 primary and November 3 presidential election. Governor DeSantis' actions are a thinly veiled attempt to block these voters and completely overturn the votes of over 5 million Florida voters. I am a white female, native born Floridian, a lifelong voter, and a retired police officer, and I am mad as hell that MY vote for Amendment 4 is not being counted! Imagine how the thousands of former non-violent felons feel, some of who served their sentences decades ago, and who are a diverse population of men & women of every color feel?

When a perpetrator uses an LGBTQ+ panic defense, they are claiming that a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity not only explains — but excuses — a loss of self-control and the subsequent assault. As of July 4th over 132,000 people in the US have lost their lives to COVID-19. Despite being six months into the pandemic, there are still many unanswered questions. However, what we do know for sure is that masking up is an effective way to prevent the spread of this virus. Wearing a mask prevents people with COVID-19 from spreading it to others. This is a crucial line of defense when combatting a virus that can be spread even if a person doesn't have symptoms. Governor Abbott knows these facts and agrees that we must all wear masks in public to keep Texas open. Governor Abbott states that he does not want to suppress Texas voters who may not have a mask. By not extending the mask order to polling locations he will, unintentionally, suppress voters who are, appropriately, fearful of contracting COVID-19. As an emergency room pediatrician I am gravely concerned that we will see increased cases related to this election. As a state we have all sacrificed so much, we cannot allow our elections to further fan the flames of the COVID-19 pandemic. Please, tell Governor Abbott to include election polling locations in the statewide mask mandate.

Essential workers need to know that they have someone in their corner and that’s why I will not give up this fight. We are just as important as the non-essential workers who are unemployed due to being furloughed or laid-off. We deserve the same extra assistance. Our daily job functions have increased because we short staffed. We have much more pressure on us and economic hardship has intensified because we are carrying a heavier load. Meanwhile, food, childcare, utilities, medical bills, as well as daily life is increasing in price. This is bringing on mental and emotional stress for essential workers everywhere, and we are feeling unappreciated. Our work is necessary to keep the economy functioning and deserve extra assistance.

Recently, a variety of concerning issues have come to light that are directly associated with social organizations in AU Greek Life. Accusations of sexual assault and the lack of inclusivity associated with Greek Life, among a variety of other incidents, have taken a toll on our student body, so we think AU would be a better place without them. If AU claims to be the inclusive, diverse, and just place it brands itself as, it will stand with us in taking this crucial step.
