  • Tell Congress to stop ignoring veterans who are sick and dying from toxic burn pits
There’s a reason it’s against the law to burn hazardous waste in your own backyard in America. It’s common sense. Burning regular household waste releases carcinogens, neuro-disruptors, and heavy metals that can have devastating effects on the lungs, heart, brain, thyroid, and immune system. It’s also a scientific fact. Federal and state government agencies compiled decades of research linking toxins from burn pits to diseases and birth defects. But the US military paid private companies like Halliburton subsidiary KBR billions of dollars from taxpayer funds to burn human waste, aerosols, Styrofoam, medical waste, biohazardous materials, body parts, trucks, and explosives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then troops got sick and started dying. It’s haunting and a reminder that these forever wars have long-lasting consequences. For every soldier returning with horrific health defects, there are untold numbers of servicemembers who continue to be subjected to burn pit sites and toxic smoke to this day. The DoD and VA must acknowledge the reality and gravity of the problems toxic chemicals from burn pits have caused and take immediate action to end the use of the active burn pits once and for all. In addition, Congress must make health care and compensation available to veterans and servicemembers who are suffering exposure-related health effects. And, we must pass legislation that grants surviving families of deceased veterans the benefits they deserve. We have worked together to pressure Congress to acknowledge the bipartisan need to care for the 9/11 community suffering from cancers and other health problems after those deadly attacks nearly 20 years ago. Washington moves too slow for the families who need our government’s help. We only got that done last year, and it took all the help people like you were able to provide signing petitions, making phone calls, chipping in to cover costs, and organizing in your local communities. We’re taking this fight about burn pits to Congress and want to work even more quickly. We want to work together with anyone willing to help those who served in the military and came home feeling abandoned after their government used them to fight wars and risk their lives. Sign the petition as one step to help provide health care and compensation to those suffering from exposure to toxic burn pits. Let’s fix this and stick up for the families who are fighting for health care and accountability from the same government that sent them into harm’s way. We will update you on the upcoming bill and other actions you can take as the campaign develops so please stay tuned.

  • Help Keep eBikes Off Of Maui’s Na Ala Hele Hiking/Mountain Biking/Equestrian Trails
The opening of these trails to ebikes will open the floodgates to users who will easily ride 2 or 3 times the # of laps ridden by conventional (a.k.a. NONMOTORIZED) bikes, on vehicles weighing 50-60% heavier. Add this to an already overused and under maintained trail system and you get crowded, blown out trails. Here are some articles dealing with the subject: https://www.adventure-journal.com/2019/12/lawsuits-stack-up-against-feds-decision-to-allow-e-bikes-on-public-land/ https://www.adventure-journal.com/2019/08/e-bikes-on-public-lands-not-so-fast-say-these-conservancy-groups/

  • We Do Care About the Hatch Act
All employees of the government except the President and Vice President are subject to the rules under the Hatch Act. This administration have repeatedly violated ethics norms and in turn is turning our democracy into autocracy. We do not want a dictator and we want government employees who are supposed to be working for the people to act in ethical ways while employed.

  • Ban Private Online Proctoring in K-12 Schools
In the midst of a pandemic, Big Tech is trying to enrich itself and invade our children’s privacy through new and untested online proctoring services. By scanning our children’s faces, IDs, and even their bedrooms, these online proctoring companies promise to end cheating forever. The choice is clear: surveillance has no place in our children’s lives. The Department of Education must protect kids’ privacy by banning private online test proctoring companies from K-12 schools. Online proctoring companies do exactly what they advertise to do: they collect invasive amounts of sensitive, private information, use new and untested technology to determine a child’s integrity, and create a permanent record of their behavior in their servers. By fudging the line between security and privacy, these firms are turning classrooms into a privacy threat. My first interaction with an online proctoring service was when I tried to take an online exam this past spring quarter. Within minutes, it was clear to me that this software had no place in the classroom. First, it asked my name, and then for government ID, and then to scan my face and retinas. As if that wasn’t enough, a company I had never heard of asked me to photograph my room, and that’s when I knew that this isn’t security software -- it’s straight-up spyware. Students aren’t criminals, and we shouldn’t be treated as such. It’s obvious that these services are dangerous in a college setting, but imagine how much worse it would be if they penetrated K-12 schools. Children would be forced to share mountains of sensitive, personal information with no oversight as to how it will affect their futures, including: - Biometric data like facial images, retina scans, and fingerprints - Citizenship status - Gender identity and expression - Weight, health conditions, and mental and physical disabilities - Online browsing history, internet searches, and interactions This technology is invasive for students of all ages, but especially inappropriate for kids under 18. Parents and children will be at the mercy of shadowy firms to determine their academic integrity, generating profiles for every child using invasive amounts of private information. If enough students and parents fight back against this move towards mass surveillance of young children, we can hold these companies accountable and protect kids’ privacy. Tell Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education: no more mass surveillance of children. Ban private online test proctoring companies from K-12 schools.

  • AT&T: Help Families Afford Remote Learning
Distance learning is hard enough, but for 9 million kids without reliable internet access, remote school is nearly impossible. AT&T, one of the largest internet providers in the U.S, had been offering low-cost, high-speed internet to families at $10/month - but the waiver expires September 30, just as the school year is ramping up.

  • Fedex and UPS Step Up to Support USPS in Delivering Vote Ballots
The support will help reduce the pressure on USPS due to the current financial and technical challenges from the new policies. Support will also reduce the populations fear of vote by mail, thus, minimize voter suppression. Lastly, voting by mail helps to reduce the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus by minimizing the number of people (especially, our seniors) having to go to the polls to vote.
