  • End Minimum Balance Fee Abuse by the Banks
Any average American who has a bank account knows the ever-present threat of the Minimum Balance Fee -- that insidious fee the bank charges you when your balance falls below the level of money they insist you keep in your account. Granted, this is nothing new in the banking industry. But why in the world should we pay the bank to lend it our money? Well, knowing full well that there isn't a US Congressman who has the gumption to stand fully against the banks on the matter of charging minimum balance fees, I propose a compromise: Whereas most banks will open a checking account for as little as $25, but require their customers to maintain a minimum balance of $1,500 to avoid fees (which is quite a large gap), and knowing that the average customer is often stretched to keep that much cash at the bank's disposal and, consequently, out of their own reach, it is obvious that the banks do this in order to rape their lower-income clients. It is an insidious practice, as it puts many customers into debt the moment they begin lending the bank their money, Therefore, I propose that Congress pass legislation that makes it illegal for a bank to open a checking or savings account for any amount below their minimum balance requirement. The benefit of this is that banks will either have to accept a significant loss in new clients (which they don't want), or they will have to severely drop their minimum balance requirements to levels attainable by a much greater number of Americans. Furthermore, I propose that Congress also pass legislation forbidding banks from charging overdraft (NSF) fees on accounts that they have service-charged into overdraft status. If assessing a service charge will effectively wipe out an account, the bank should be limited to only one of two actions: either forgo the service charge, or forgo the overdraft fee. No more double-dipping! There are laws against auto mechanics breaking things in your car and then charging you to fix them, or doctors intentionally introducing viruses into your body and then charging you for the cure. Charging an NSF fee after creating an overdraft in a customer's account is the same rotten practice, and should definitely be made illegal. Please sign and pass this petition along to your friends!

  • Fund the Rail Runner to support New Mexico's future
The Rail Runner commuter rail service for the past six years has been vital for New Mexico's commuter traffic between Belen, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe. However, in order to fully serve New Mexico's commuter traffic, it requires more funding to optimize its schedule and planned service. Profits come after experimentation.

  • Stop Voter Suppression
Throughout the United States, in states key to the upcoming presidential election such as: Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Texas, Iowa and Pennsylvania. Republican held state governments are enacting laws which require never before needed and costly voter identification cards, limit access to the polls in areas known to already be restricted and target low-income, elderly and minority voters. A fair election wherein all citizens can perform their civic duty and vote is central to a free democracy. Most of these restrictive laws have been enacted within the last few days or months giving the electorate little time to respond and determine if they are still eligible to vote.

  • Stop Croke Park GAA (PACT) Suing Local Community & Handball Centre Members and Families In Dublin...
We are asking members and supporters of the GAA. to petition that: “The GAA through PACT immediately cease and take no further legal actions against members of the Community & Handball Centre in St. Josephs Avenue, Dublin 3, and that the GAA / C.L.G. and PACT not interfere in any way with the running of the Centre”. The GAA is an amateur association of members, families, and communities with a stated objective to nurture communities and respect individuals. On 15th March 2012 RTE Prime Time (See YouTube - Croke Park Dispute) revealed that: 1. Pairc An Chrocaigh Teo (‘PACT’) the GAA’s company, in the weeks before Christmas, sued through the committee all members/families (over 400) of the Community & Handball Centre (the ‘Centre’) that the community and handballers built and maintained for 40 years. Many being sued are GAA members. A Croke Park executive acknowledged to RTE a reason Croke Park want to knock the Community Centre is so that they could turn lorries. 2. The Community & Handball Centre is a hugely important facility to the local community. 3. A Dublin City Council committee has condemned the GAA’s company PACT for suing the community. {Our Note: See YouTube - This may be the first time the GAA has been condemned by any local authority committee in the Republic and raises serious questions about GAA policy}. To sue people that have given a lifetime as GAA volunteers is a disgrace – to sue them just before Christmas signals something has gone seriously wrong with our association; who, if anyone, advised Croke Park GAA to do that. The GAA is not allowed to sue its members (GAA Rule 1.9) nor should the GAA use its company, PACT, to sue members. Croke Park GAA has enough property and wealth. Anyone that is part of a community group knows how destructive to people’s lives it becomes when a vested interest seeks to sue and destroy it. All the community request is that PACT enter a legal binding agreement to provide full replacement facilities if they want to knock our Centre. Despite promises Croke Park has not done this. GAA/PACT uses professional advisors. Reddy Charlton Solicitors, 12 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin 2, is acting for PACT in the legal case against the Community & Handball Centre members.
