• Photo ID Volunteers
I would like to propose that an organization be formed to provide legal photo i.d.s for those in need. I, for one, would volunteer to take photos of people who want to exercise their Constitutional right to vote, and there must be many more who are willing to volunteer their time..

  • RELEASE MARISSA ALEXANDER - NOW!!!
Marissa Alexander is a 31 yr. old mother of three - a battered woman who only fired a warning shot at her attacker. This was in "Stand Your Ground" Florida...the same state George Zimmerman killed an unarmed teen and was initially allowed to walk, without charges. Marissa was not only denied that same right, and she didn't even KILL the guy. She successfully stopped the attack. And now she has been sentenced to 20 YEARS IN PRISON...an OUTRAGE.

  • I Don't Support the F-35 Lightning II
The U.S. has already spent $11.5 billion on the F-35 Lighting II, a multirole fighter jet. Over the 50-year lifespan of this program, it is estimated we will spend $1.5 trillion. It is estimated that we spent $1.030–$1.415 trillion on defense in 2011. This is senseless. The official website of the F-35 says they need our support and asks that we sign their petition. I ask that you do the opposite. Do not support this waste of money on another weapon.

  • Raise the Federal Minimum Wage for Tipped Employees!
The federal minimum wage for tipped employees has been frozen since 1991 at $2.13 thanks to the efforts of restaurant lobbyists. In 1991, tipped employee wages were 50% of the federal minimum wage of $4.25. $2.13 is just 30% of the federal minimum wage of $7.25. It's time that we raise the wage for the hard working Americans that run our nation's restaurants and bars!

  • every elected official earning over 100k be it salery or pention pays thier own healthcare costs
Why should someone making over $100,000 a year need a taxpayer making $30,000 a year to pay for their healthcare? How about they pay their own way and each kick in a buck (a dollar) towards healthcare for some hard working, 40 hour plus a week person.

  • Allow LGBT community to save lives in their communities by donating blood!
My fellow Americans: Thank you for taking the time to read about this petition and an issue that is very near and dear to my heart. I work for the Nation's second largest blood bank and the issue of blood donation has been a cause of mine ever since my grandmother had breast cancer. While undergoing a double mastectomy she lost an immense amount of blood and required multiple blood transfusions. Had it not been for those in her community, which cared enough to donate their blood, I would not have grown up having a grandmother. Once in high school and discovering who I was and that I was gay. I soon discovered that I was discriminated against from further donating and helping save others lives just as others had done for my grandmother because of the threat or risk of HIV/AIDS infection into the blood supply. I understood the reasons and back then I was even ok with them. Because it was all about ensuring the blood supply was safe for everyone. Fast forward a few more years to 2007 when I was elected student body president of Los Angeles City College and with the knowledge that only 5% of Americans that are eligible and actually donate I doubled the number of blood drives we had on campus and recruited feverishly to make sure every drive was more successful than the previous. But, every with every blood drive it got more and more difficult to answer questions about why I wasn't donating and the excuses of tattoos and traveling often didn’t hold much water as everyone knew I hadn't done either in years. Having to turn away would be donors based on solely on discrimination and old science made me feel even worse. I don’t think I could ever manage to forget the inner turmoil those experiences was a catalyst to. During the last blood drive on campus I began to see clearly, because I was a man and loved another man, I was separate and not equal. If not for anything else, living with HIV/AIDS for over 30 years has taught society that it doesn’t discriminate but we do. Had we not come farther as a society? Now, some 5 years later I once again am championing the effort of saving lives through donating blood as a Donor Outreach Coordinator. Having taken blood banking 101, I was surprised to learn that it wasn't the Non-Profs or the numerous tests each donation undergoes, 11 test for infectious diseases and 3 specifically test for HIV, that were keeping the LGBT community from donating that in fact its the FDA. Whose 32-year-old policy of discrimination was not only keeping thousands of healthy Americans from donating but also innocent children from receiving much needed transfusions so they could once again leave their homes and attend school like other children who don't suffer from sickle cell anemia. After learning the facts it was clear to me that I could no longer sit on the sidelines and stand by as our government continues their policy of separate and not equal while thousands of Americans die or cannot live their lives to its fullest because of outdated interpretations of, “Anyone who is at risk of contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.” This outdated and discriminatory policy needs to be updated and new interpretation needs to be based on science and not fear mongering. I believe that this petition, http://signon.org/sign/allow-the-lgbt-community, can change this and thousands of Americans will benefit as a result of changing the FDA's policies. I hope that you will stand with me against this policy of institutionalized discrimination, by doing so help build a bridge from one community to another and help individuals within our communities together as one America! Sincerely, Ryan C. Allen

  • Stop debt collectors from feeding like sharks on California's working poor.
Protect California's working poor from Big Business Debt collectors. Debt collectors are moving into California - where they are not required to be licensed - and feeding like sharks on California's working poor. Governor Brown needs to stop this feeding frenzy. These big collection businesses buy up huge chunks of debt, then pay attorneys to write letters demanding payment. When people cannot pay or do not respond (many don't know what to do), the collectors file a law suit, which costs hundreds of dollars to fight. How can these impoverished people pay? The end result is often big buck judgements, based on inflated interest and other charges, that are extracted (garnished) from the paychecks of the working poor. California, which allows creditors to pursue a credit card debt for 3 years, most states are 2 years, has become a feeding grounds for many unscrupulous collectors, some kicked out of other states, who prey on poor people who do not know their rights. We need for our Governor, Jerry Brown, to require all debt collectors to be licensed, then watch-dog them for unlawful tactics, including attempting to collect on debts that are past the current state statute of limitations. We also need for our Governor to reduce California's debt validity statute of limitations from three to two years and stop California from becoming a debt collectors feeding ground. Californians who have fallen on hard times, sometimes barely "getting by", are being victimized and saddled with crippling legal judgements because they don't have the money or support to fight back. Sign now and send a strong message to Governor Brown: First: Require all debt collectors to pay to be licensed by the state of California and adhere to lawful practices under penalty of state enforced severe fine and/or license revocation. Second: Reduce the state mandated window of debt collection from three years to two. Third:

  • Save Full-Day Kindergarten
We, the residents of the Three Village Central School District, are asking the Three Village Board of Education to stop the proposed cuts to our full-day kindergarten program and keep the current program intact for the 2012-2013 school year. We would like to voice our support of the Three Village full-day Kindergarten Program, and ask that you do not cut or reduce this valuable program in the revised 2.99% budget. There has never been a greater urgency in America to have all students academically succeed in our K-12 schools, along with in our universities and colleges. Competition from around the world has put our nation’s standing in the economic world at risk. There is a plethora of research which demonstrates that children who attend full-day kindergarten show greater reading and mathematics achievement gains than those who attend half-day or no kindergarten at all (NEA, 2008 pg. 1). Longitudinal data has also demonstrated that full-time kindergarten also has demonstrated long-term educational gains for students in all demographic groups, including low-income and minority students (NEA, 2008 pg.1). This is a program that benefits all incoming and future incoming kindergarten students; the elimination or reduction of this vital program will have an adverse effect on a large number of Three Village families and students, as well as the future home values of all Three Village residents.
