• I Would Be Here, But I Am . . .
The Oneida County Board of Supervisors meets during morning hours, making it difficult or impossible for working families to attend. On January 17, the Concerned Citizens will present to the board, the petition requesting more convenient meeting times. We also wish to present a banner listing names (and reasons) of citizens who could not attend the presentation on the 17th. In addition to signing, in the Comment section, please state the reason you are unable to attend the meeting on the 17th. "Working", "Supervising kids", "Volunteering" "at the Dentist Office", or anything that daytime meeting hours causes difficulty for your active participation. Thanks so much!

  • Give Oakland schools LOCAL decision-making authority!
Although inequity continues, Oakland’s flatland schools have made historic improvements in student achievement. In 1999, only five Oakland schools had API scores above 800. Today OUSD is the most improved urban school district in California – and has been for the past 7 years. We both acknowledge this achievement and understand the work that must be done to bring these gains to all Oakland’s schools. • Today 28 Oakland schools have API scores above 800 – a 460% increase – many of them in the flatlands. • On average, low-achieving Oakland schools have increased their API scores by 255 points – gains that are 60% higher than in neighboring school districts. These schools have experienced gains in student achievement because the people closest to our kids are empowered to make the academic decisions necessary for success, at the school site level. Parents, students, teachers, school staff and principals have first-hand knowledge of what constitutes effective learning at their schools, and we need to maximize the resources allocated to school sites to put their vision into action. Empowering our neighborhood schools to make decisions governing their children’s education – with authority over their school site’s educational instruction, budget, staffing and schedule – is a local control and governance model that has proven enormously successful in Oakland. But this work is unfinished. Many of Oakland’s schools, families, and neighborhoods still do not have access to this site based decision-making model and have not been able to participate in its educational success. In particular, we must improve African-American student achievement and reduce unacceptably high drop-out rates. Oakland is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and all our communities must be a part of successful schools. The painful, divisive debate over school closures only demonstrates that parents, teachers, staff and students must be engaged in a more meaningful, formal manner in decision-making beginning at the neighborhood school site level, and within the District’s decision-making processes. We call on the Board of Education to take bold action on behalf of kids. We ask that they adopt policies to create conditions that provide equity and opportunity for our kids and give school site communities clearly defined, local decision-making authority in the following four areas: • Educational Programs: Local decision-making authority to develop and implement curriculum and instruction tailored to student needs. • School Site Budgets: Local decision-making authority to allocate site resources to best meet student needs. • Staffing: Local decision-making authority around hiring, support and retention of staff based on student needs. • School Schedules: Local decision-making authority to create school schedules - which could include additional time in the day and/or school year – to best respond to student needs. Through the empowerment of our families, students, teachers, staff and principals at every neighborhood school, we can ensure all Oakland students have access to customized, quality education and the opportunity for success. Make our voices count!

  • State of Kansas' Dept. of Wildlife and Parks anti-seniors agenda
Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism is wanting to balance their budget on the back of senior citizens. If they can convince the legislature and Governor Sam Brownback, beginning in July of 2012 senior citizens will no longer get reduced rates at State parks. Those 65 and older will no longer be exempt from purchasing fishing and hunting permits starting in 2013. Let us send a message to the Governor and legislature that we don't agree with this method of increasing licenses sold by removing a benefit of longevity.

  • reduce medical fees for the uninsurred to that of medicaid.
it is about time that the uninsurred are not charged more for medical services than insurance companies. it is a known fact that the uninsurred are charged 4 to 10 times more for the same services. if we are concerned about the rising costs especially attributable to the unpaid medical costs we have an opportunity to reduce these unpaid costs by reducung what hospitals can rite off as unpaid. if we use the medicaid fee structure we can substantially reduce our unpaid medical costs saving billions of dollars each year.

  • Stop credit report requirements for job seekers
Many people have been ravaged by the economic downturn, and, as a result, have lost jobs, houses, etc. With these losses come credit problems. Many companies, as a means of discrimination, are requiring credit reports on job applicants lessening their chances of getting jobs and being able to get back on their feet and provide for their families.

  • Grant student loan amnesty to deserving citizens
Student loan debt is often overwhelming, and causing financial instability and hardships for many working Americans. While student loan forgiveness programs exist, many do not qualify. Amnesty should therefore be granted to at least one exemplary citizen, who uses the education they are in debt for, to serve their community. We are therefore calling for Congress to pass a law, that grants student loan pardons to at least one deserving American citizen, making a significant contribution to their community.

  • Create public owned energy utilities
People require energy for dwellings, health, food, manufacturing and transportation. Energy sources and distribution should be owned by the citizens of the United States. Energy should be available to all at cost, without benefit to large energy conglomerates and a few individuals. This would include: oil, coal, ethinol, and especially newer sources of renewable energy, such as wind and solar and other forms not mentioned here.
