FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb surprised everyone when he announced that the FDA is considering banning terms like "almond milk" on the labels of plant-based milks. Why? “Almonds don’t lactate,” he quipped. He was only half-kidding: it really does come down to lactation. For years, there’s been a standard on the books that specifies that the word milk must refer to the lacteal secretions of a cow. It’s always been the rule that you can’t put the plain-old unadorned label milk on almond milk, soy milk, or even goat’s milk. But now Big Dairy is seeing its sales plummet while almond, soy, oat, and other plant-based milks gain market share. So dairy lobbyists have taken the position that the FDA should ban the word "milk" from plant-based labels altogether, even when it appears after the words almond, soy, or oat. Call it beverage or drink, they say, not milk. The Good Food Institute is a nonprofit organization that works to create a better future of food. My neighbors are being endangered by irresponsible pellet gun owners that get drunk and start shooting. Police have been called numerous times and they can't do anything because the laws tie their hands. It feels laws are protecting the criminals rather than decent, law abiding citizens that just want to live in peace. Robbing us of peaceful enjoyment of our homes.

This issue is a serious one. Obviously climate change is also very serious to all Human Kind. Plastic is in the deepest parts of our oceans and is inundating the Dominque Republic, Hawaii, and many other places. Plastic covers the Pacific Ocean in an area 3 times the size of France. There are plenty of alternatives than plastic.

Our criminal justice system is broken. There is one system for the privileged and another system for people of color, the poor, and the disenfranchised. The anticipated sweep that will move the Waimanalo Beach Park houseless residents out of the area will not resolve the situation and will only make matters worse, pushing them into the residential areas or further out in the restricted beach areas. As community outreach providers in Waimanalo have seen – the displacement of houseless individuals and families leads to further stress and chaotic responses that may result in more serious consequences. We are asking that the state and county hold off on any sweep of the area as the community works toward solutions to identify a more permanent solution. The Waimanalo community supports the Ohana Zones concept and it is a project we would like to see started in Waimanalo. A safe area designated for residents that understand rules and oversight will allow a place where houseless residents of our community can stay without being "swept." Now with Act 209 (2018) becoming law, Waimanalo would like to be the first community to pilot a program that allows a safe area for our Waimanalo ohana to thrive towards independence and eventually permanent housing.

Others who receive retirement benefits from other sources are entitled to social security, but not public servants. The rules should apply to everyone.
