• Remove statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest from Tennessee Capital Bldg
A statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest is prominently situated in the Tennessee state capital right outside the General Assembly. The statue needs to be removed because: 1. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a successful businessman selling people from Africa who were smuggled and enslaved; 2. Forrest was a traitor to the United States during the Civil War; 3. He was the commander of rebel forces who massacred United State troops at a place called Fort Pillow on April 12, 1864, the majority of which were African American; and 4. Forrest was the first leader of the KKK. Anyone of those above reasons should eliminate him from the capital, but all four are too much to bear. His statue has got to go.

  • Mayor Weinberger, Don't Veto Our Vote!
The Air Force says F-35 basing will harm children and elderly in thousands of families and will pose high crash danger. The livability of thousands of affordable homes is at risk. The Air Force says any number of alternatives is available for Burlington. Low-noise-level equipment with a proven high safety record will be very good for Burlington and for surrounding cities and towns. The resolution respects the will of the voters. I urge you to join the council in respecting the will of the voters.

  • Tell ICE: Reverse policy on immigrant mothers!
Last week, the Trump Administration announced that it was ending a policy that generally releases pregnant women from immigration detention centers. Under President Obama, immigrant mothers-to-be were typically released except in rare circumstances. ICE’s new policy means that more pregnant women will be detained, and is part of an agenda to detain more immigrants than ever before. The policy change is especially concerning because ICE has a record of not always properly giving immigrants proper access to health care. Many immigrant would-be mothers have lost pregnancies while in detention centers. ICE still hasn’t said what it plans to do with nursing mothers. Immigrant women need to be treated with dignity and given a chance to access proper prenatal care. ICE needs to reverse its new policy and release pregnant women from immigration detention! Please tell ICE Director Homan to stop taking risks with the lives of immigrant women and their children.

  • IL General Assembly: pass HB 4326/SB 834 the Illinois Election Integrity Act
In September 2017, the federal government notified election officials in 21 states that hackers targeted their systems before 2016 presidential election. (Geoff Mulvihill and Jake Pearson, Associated Press, September 22, 2017). Illinois was one of the 21 states. Illinois cannot afford computerized election theft in 2018. To safeguard the integrity of the 2018 General Election, the Illinois Ballot Integrity Project is working to secure the passage of the Illinois Election Integrity Act (HB 4326 (formally HB 712)/SB 834) in time for the November 6, 2018, General Election. HB 4326/SB 834 provides a single solution to a complex election integrity problem by introducing critically needed external, independent review throughout the entire election system. The Illinois Election Integrity Act will require three mandatory election system audits throughout the State, which will assure the accuracy and integrity of Illinois Elections. The three mandatory election system audits are: 1. Election Day Audit: it is an audit consisting of a count of a random sample of 10% of the paper ballots cast in each precinct, to be conducted in the polling place, immediately upon close of the polls. 2. Parallel Central Tabulation Audit: it is an audit of all votes cast as recorded on precinct poll tapes, by independent public accountants, within 48 hours of the close of the polls. 3. Pre-Election Operational Audit: it is an audit of election systems, identifies and reports election system security weaknesses, the steps necessary to remediate security weaknesses discovered. These three audits will provide extremely high assurance that votes and ballots are being accurately recorded, accurately tabulated and accurately reported. HB 4326 was submitted by State Representative Linda Chapa-LaVia (IL 83rd District) SB 834 was submitted by State Senator Christina Castro (IL 22nd District).
