• Censure Trump
"Trump's comments about immigrants from 'shithole countries' is among the worst statements he has ever uttered. It might very well be the worst. "To have this outrage come as we approach the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is to cast in sharp relief the moral gulf between America as envisioned by the civil rights activist and our current President. It was Dr. King who said, 'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.' By all accounts, Mr. Trump does not now and has never believed in such an America. "This is undeniably and clearly outright racist. It simply cannot be allowed to continue by anyone who cares about the future of this country. This is sad. It is hurtful. It is dangerous. It is unpatriotic. Each elected official, each American, has a choice: where do you stand? Some may say this helps the President with his base. What about how it debases the values of our nation? This rhetoric has to be damned at every turn, at every time. That millions of hard working men, women, and children have lives that hang in the balance at the whims of this President only makes this moment all the more tragic. Make no mistake, America is diminished today in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of history. It will be up to every decent person to make sure that this is not our destiny." - Dan Rather (on Facebook, 1/11/18)

  • Thank you Senator Dianne Feinstein
This petition is to honor Senator Dianne Feinstein for being brave and releasing the Fusion GPS testimony to the American people so that we know the truth and can judge for ourselves if there was collusion between President Trump and the Russians as we have suspected all along. You are our hero.

  • Fresno State, renew Dr. Lars Maischak's Contract!
We believe that Fresno State owes its students, its employees, and its community a strong stand for academic freedom, for freedom of speech, for quality education, and against right-wing violence. We, therefore, demand that Fresno State renew the contract of Dr. Lars Maischak and allow him to teach in the classroom in his field of History. BACKGROUND In April of 2017, right-wing media outlets accused Dr. Maischak of advocating for, or planning to commit, acts of murder and assassination. In this matter, Dr. Maischak was thoroughly investigated by the Secret Service and exonerated of any wrongdoing. The intent of Dr. Maischak's widely-reported statements, scandalized by right-wing propagandists, was to warn of the future consequences of the actions and ideas of the present administration and its supporters. His position was based on his scholarly understanding of History, stemming from his experience as a native of Germany and a student of the history of both Germany and America. Scholars and an interested public may disagree that Trumpism stands in the tradition of European Fascism; although many vocal supporters of Mr. Trump proudly embrace that very tradition. In a free society, and in the academy, a disagreeable view is not a crime, nor cause for punitive measures by an employer, nor a justification for public vilification and threats of violence. It is, rather, an invitation to explore the evidence underlying such a view, to debate its merits, and to engage in public discourse. In making his statements, Dr. Maischak's exercised his constitutionally protected right of free speech and followed his conscience as a scholar. The death threats against Dr. Maischak and other members of the campus community come from a segment of the population now routinely deployed to terrorize dissenters. Dozens of scholars, artists, actors, activists, and journalists have been targeted with the same playbook in 2017. For Fresno State to give in to the threat of violence is to capitulate to this orchestrated campaign of intimidation. Timidity in the face of threats emboldens those who seek to silence critical voices, and thus exposes others to similar attacks. Fresno State has removed Dr. Maischak from classroom teaching duties, ordered him to design online classes, and teach these classes in the Spring of 2018, while his present, three-year contract is in effect. Past actions and statements of Fresno State suggest their intent to deny a renewal of Dr. Maischak's contract at the time of its expiration. We believe that the University has erred in its past actions towards Dr. Maischak and that it would commit a moral, political, and academic mistake by not renewing his contract. To hear Dr. Maischak lay out his argument, listen to his interview with Chauncey DeVega: http://www.chaunceydevega.com/2017/10/a-conversation-with-lars-maischak-about.html

  • Trump: Apologize for Racist Remarks about Immigrants!
Donald Trump lowered the bar even further with his vile comments about Haiti, El Salvador and African countries. He reconfirmed what we already know: he has fully embraced white supremacy and there are no limits to his attacks on people of color. His comments do not reflect the American values many of us hold close to our hearts. His disgraceful approach to immigration reform is leaving millions of young immigrants and TPS holders vulnerable to his deportation machine.

  • Protect ratepayers from PNM's $350 million coal bailout!
In advance of approval by the Public Regulation Commission (PRC) for the closure of PNM's San Juan coal units 1 & 4 PNM is seeking to recoup $353 million from ratepayers for the money it planned to make on those assets. In this legislation, PNM is seeking 100% recovery for its failed assets. Here's what's wrong with PNM's bill to recoup failed assets at ratepayers expense: 1. Failed assets recovery has been awarded when there is an external cause (EPA Regulation, like the Regional Haze Rule) causing unexpected early retirement of a plant. In those instances, the PRC has held that the burden must be shared 50/50 between shareholders and ratepayers. But in the instant case, PNM is not closing San Juan because of some unanticipated cause, it is closing San Juan because: a) all the other co-owners want out; and b) PNM cannot meet its burden to show that the San Juan coal plant is cost-effective against alternative resources (wind & solar); and c) PNM's internal senior management and Board assessment is that PNM can make more money (their estimate is $532 million) closing San Juan than running it. 2. PNM is making an end run around the very regulatory body established by the Legislature to regulate the utility: the Public Regulation Commission. PNM is afraid that the PRC may award PNM nothing - zero dollars because of the reasoning behind "early” closure. San Juan will be more than 50 years old at that time, is poorly performing (only runs about 68% of the time), and is more expensive for ratepayers and more damaging to the climate and environment than alternatives. At maximum, the PRC will award PNM 50%, because that is what PRC precedent is and that is what was awarded when there was a legitimate external cause that forced early retirement. 3. This bill is premature. PNM will file its case to close San Juan in July 2018 and it is important to allow various parties used to challenge PNM to fully use the legal process (discovery) regarding replacement power, energy ownership, clean up, reparations for San Juan County residents and workers, etc. There is much to be understood and the upcoming Abandonment Case provides a critical opportunity to establish the evidentiary basis from which decisions about these issues should be determined – under the regulatory framework with all interested parties involved. 4. This bill bakes in PNM ownership of ALL replacement power resources on PNM-owned land to the detriment of a robust competitive renewable energy RFP process that could produce ten thousand new jobs in New Mexico. So this is problematic for a number of reasons: a) violates anti-trust provisions, is anti-competitive, and is inherently unfair stifling (if not killing) the market for other power producers; and b) will NOT result in the lowest cost renewable energy for consumers; and c) the reason Colorado's economy is booming is yes, of course, because of marijuana, but also because there are more than 12,000 people employed in the renewable energy market - and we have better resources than Colorado. If PNM was NOT the gatekeeper in charge of ALL renewable energy then other independent power producers would be creating jobs, thousands of jobs here and we could diversify and grow our economy. 5. The bill does not include any provisions for the compensation of workers, impacted communities, or a full accounting of the remediation and cleanup costs of the site. It allows PNM to recoup its costs but does nothing for the employees and local community members impacted by the plant closure.

  • President Trump need to present excuses to the Haitian People
I am an immigrant, a future Law Student with a BS in Economics and Communications and I am Haitian. Trump referred to my homeland as a "shithole and said: we don't want all those Haitians here, Send them out" After saying that we all have aids reported the Washington Post. Trump's recent comments open the door for our children, friends, and families to be bullied by narrow-minded people at our school, at our work-place, church and in the community. We need the President to present excuses just to set the record straight that every word he said is wrong and are a disgrace for humanity. We can keep letting him dividing us and driving a wedge between the community that will take centuries to repairs. As we are commemorating the 8th anniversaries of the massive heartquake that devastated our country, more than 500,000 thousand death on January 12, 2010. We need to mourn our people in peace and the climate created by Trump's comments are decidedly not helping. Will you stand with me and ask Donald Trump to present Excuses to the Haitian People?

  • Congress: Reject Trump's racism
I am an immigrant, a former White House aide, and a Haitian-American. Yesterday, in a moment of unbridled racism and during a meeting concerning changes in immigration policy, Trump referred to my homeland, El Salvador, and African nations as "shithole countries." Trump's recent comments just prove what we’ve already known for a long time: that the man who occupies the Oval Office is indeed a racist. Trump has always been a racist. He started his business career as a racist. He started his political career as a racist. Now, in the White House, he is using his racism to drive his policy. Will you stand with me and call on Congress to reject Trump's racism and all the policies that stem from it?

  • Congress, will you stand with racists or with immigrants?
We shouldn’t be surprised by Trump's comments about Black immigrants from Haiti and African nations. He has never hidden his racist, white supremacist agenda. What is shocking, however, is Congress' refusal to stop his racist attacks on immigrants. We won't stand for this. Congress must repudiate Trump's hate , but not simply by saying they disagree with it. They must stand up for immigrant communities by passing protections for dreamers and TPS families immediately and by repealing the Muslim Ban. On Monday, the Trump administration announced it was eliminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 200,000 of our neighbors and loved ones from El Salvador who have lived in the U.S. for decades. This announcement is the latest in a rampage of attacks on immigrant communities, including canceling TPS for over 60,000 people from Haiti, Sudan, and Nicaragua, and putting 800,000 immigrant youth at risk of being deported and ripped from their homes by ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. And on Thursday, in response to a bipartisan Senate proposal to find a permanent solution for Dreamers and TPS recipients, Trump called Haiti and African countries "shitholes" in a White House meeting. This is beyond unacceptable! Trump's racist remark makes it painfully clear that he has no intention of working with Congress to find a solution for immigrant youth and families and no respect for our nation's immigration traditions or the incredible contributions immigrants have made. The only thing he intends to do is promote a white supremacist agenda that rips families apart and demonizes communities of color.

I oppose ANY potential for the pulchritude we have from our beaches to the Chesapeake Bay to be destroyed. I will vote against anyone who supports the possibility of having to answer "How did this happen" or investigate who is responsible. No offshore drilling, the question never gets asked. Period.
