  • Recall Arlan Meekhoff
Senator Meekhoff has the state of Michigan on the edge of the abyss. Pushing right to work through in an underhanded fashion during a lame duck session of congress, and closing the peoples building down to prevent effective protest.

  • Protect human rights for a 'world-class' community
City of Charlottesville has undertaken a study of human rights protection needs within City limits. Workplace and housing related discrimination have been among the greatest areas of concern. Other violations of human rights have been discussed. More about the City's study process may be found here: http://www.charlottesville.org/index.aspx?page=3223 Human rights concerns are not isolated within City limits. For example, most employment, most housing, and most health services in the area are located in Albemarle County, not in City of Charlottesville; and much or most UVA operations are located in Albemarle County not in the City's jurisdictional limits. Human rights concerns do not and can not stop at City limits in a community that includes the City, the County, and the University so closely associated. Virginia's problematic history of de jure racial discrimination and violence, gender discrimination and violence, abuse or persons with mental illness and developmental disorders, confiscation of Native Virginians' homelands and livelihoods, and other violations of human rights is our common history. And, in the 21st century new concerns for human rights are rising among immigrant and undocumented individuals and families, lgbt individuals and families, persons with HIV and their caregivers, persons with dementia, and others. Only active effort - not denial or neglect of human rights protections - can overcome this problematic history, and guarantee that our communities are open to the world as 'world-class' places to live, work, study, and visit in the 21st century. Concern for human rights protections should not stop at City limits. Albemarle County should demonstrate its commitment to achieving effective protection of human rights in the County. Its a 'world-class' thing to do! Thank you.

Public workers in 15 states who have worked in both the private and public sectors are presently disallowed from receiving Social Security they earned in the private sector when they accept their public pensions. These workers will not receive full public pensions because of their time spent in the private sector and yet they are denied the benefits they paid into all those years.

  • Strong Human Rights Commission
In order to end discrimination and improve fairness, Charlottesville needs a human rights commission with strong enforcement capabilities like the one in Prince William County. Our city council will decide on this on December 17th meeting. The Dialogue on Race Steering Committee endorsed this proposal in October 2011. It is finally time for action by our city council. Please support a Human Rights Commission with the ability to enforce anti-discrimination law, conduct studies and hearings, and perform educational and training out reach.

  • John Henry Lawson, Civil War Hero
John Henry Lawson was an African American who won the Medal of Honor for his actions aboard the USS Hartford at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. For a significant portion of his life, Lawson lived in Camden, New Jersey. He also chose to be buried in Jersey soil. With the 150th commemoration of the Civil War currently taking the NJ Sesquicentennial Committee has elected to exclude John Henry Lawson from its list of New Jersey Medal of Honor winners, Also, Lawson, who was an African American, is the only MOH winner excluded by the committee. We want Lawson's name added to its roll of MOH winners.
