• Demand justice for janitors who clean for veterans, the military and government
As the nation observes Veteran’s Day, janitors who ensure that veterans have safe and sanitary rooms at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center are being denied two weeks’ pay. I take my job as a janitor at Walter Reed very seriously and I feel responsible for keeping it clean and safe for all the veterans who are getting care there. But Escab Enterprises, a federal cleaning contractor that has received over $40 million in taxpayer money since 2008, hasn’t paid me and my fellow employees our last paycheck--for two weeks of work-- and they won’t even say when we will get paid. In fact, they haven’t paid nearly 300 janitors that work at Walter Reed, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and the Internal Revenue Service. We earn just $13.97 per hour at Walter Reed and without two weeks of pay we are already struggling to support our families. We don’t know when—or if—they intend to pay us what we’re owed. The government is spending millions in tax dollars on this company that hasn’t paid the workers who are helping our nation’s veterans recuperate in a safe and clean environment and cleaning other important government buildings. We are committed to our jobs and continue to work to best protect the health and safety of the patients and workers in the buildings we clean but we need to be paid immediately so we can support our families. We have been told a responsible contractor is taking over at the Walter Reed Medical Center. The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and the Internal Revenue Service should do the same; Escab Enterprises is a bad actor and shouldn’t be allowed to work for the government.

  • Expose members of Congress' positions on taxes for the top 2%
Polls show that 70% of Americans favor the return to Clinton-era tax rates for the top 2% of earners ($200,000 for individuals, $250,000 for couples). Yet many members of Congress insist that these tax cuts stay in place, while favoring cuts to programs important to the middle class. This petition asks the White House to create an online site for tracking each member of Congress' position on this issue, so it is very clear to constituents where their representatives stand. The site should be widely publicized to the press, on television, and social media. If 70% favors this change, exactly who are these Congresspeople representing?

  • Boycott Papa John's and Applebee's for punishing their workers due to election result
A number of businesses, including some large chain restaurants like Applebee's, have decided to punish their employees' decision to vote for Obama in this past election. Reports have emerged that "a business owner in Williamson, Georgia told C-Span that he laid off three employees ("who voted for Obama") and cut his remaining employees' hours from 30 to 25 per week due to his fear of Obamacare" (gawker.com). According to the Huffington Post, "the CEO of Papa John's Pizza said that due to Obamacare, it's 'likely that some franchise owners would reduce employees' hours in order to avoid having to cover them.'" Similarly, "Applebee's owner Tankel wouldn't go so far as saying he would lay off current employees or cut their hours to keep them part-time rather than pay for their health care, but he did hint that those were distinct possibilities." It is our responsibility as consumers to boycott these businesses. Using an extreme interpretation of marginal productivity theory, these CEOs are arguing that unless citizens cave in to their every demand, unless we vote the way they want us to vote, unless we agree to work for pitiful wages, unless we agree to work for them without requiring that they provide us and our children with healthcare coverage, unless we do all these things they will proceed to punish us like little children for our "unreasonable" behavior. We should not capitulate to this undemocratic blackmail. We must boycott their businesses in order to show them that ordinary consumers are the real agents of economic growth. Businesses and the economy at large cannot succeed when there is low aggregate demand. Businesses cannot succeed when people working for dismal wages can barely afford to eat out, when people have to worry all the time about medical bankruptcies, when people are laid off because their employer did not like the way they voted. They must be disabused of the false impression that they are single handedly the job creators upon which our economy depends. They must learn that it is the symbiotic relationship between an aggregate group of financially secure consumer citizens and businesses who depend on them that leads to economic prosperity. We have to get this point across by boycotting their place of business, no matter how much we love the products they sell. This is an ideological battle that we cannot afford to lose! Thank you in advance for your support, Mich Nyawalo

  • ITs Time For NBC To Say To Donald Trump... "YOU'RE FIRED!"
The 2012 election will be remembered as one whereby facts were tossed to the wind. As an American my most treasured right is the right to cast a vote and if we depend on the media to assist us in making such an important decision and the media “KNOWINGLY” promotes people who “KNOWINGLY” spread lies, rumors and innuendos it’s time for a change. At the pace we are going can you imagine what the election of 2016 will be like? It’s time for NBC to break all ties to both Donald Trump and Trump Enterprises.

  • Clear Channel suppresses progressive radio
KPOJ, Oregon's progressive talk radio, was suddenly shut down by Clear Channel without notice over the weekend. Clear Channel is owned by Bain Capital. KPOJ was the only station with a signal strong enough to hear Thom Hartman, Carl Wolfson, and shows like Ring of Fire. The station fired Portlander Carl Wolfson without notice. The radio format turned instantly to sports. Please tell Clear Channel that you will not stand for suppressing alternative viewpoints, and to reinstate the progressive format immediately.
