Mr. William Harrison and The North Carolina State Board of Education Vote "NO" to the Howard & Li...In less than two weeks our NC State Board of Education will decide whether or not to make final approval for a new charter school named The Howard & Lillian Lee Scholars School in our district. This new charter will siphon away over $4.5 million dollars from our local public education budget that has already seen major reductions in the past few years. The profit will not go back into the community but into the coffers of a private for profit company, National Heritage Academies.89 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Suepinda Keith

Before and After School Care for Lake Jackson Area childrenCanopy Oaks Elementary School and our other surrounding elementary schools are poised to graduate our 5th graders this year and a they are zoned to continue their middle school education at RAA Middle School. We also have families in our area who have sent their child out of the designated school zone, due to the lack of before and after school care on our area. Since middle school does not start accepting our children until 8:45am and most of us are working parents I have approached the Lake Jackson YMCA and asked that they provider before and after school care for our children. I choose the YMCA because their doors open at 5:30am and remain open to well after the work day is over. They are also a family oriented facility who already have an established child care room for parents who work out there.5 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Cheryl Meeks

TheIndyChannel.com Indiana Cosmetology Could Be Deregulated Cosmetology License Bill Draws Protest http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/politics/cosmetology-license-bill-draws-protests THIS WILL AFFECT YOU TOO…SEE HOW Everyone should attend. The more people, the better HOUSE BILL No. 1006 Link: http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2011/HB/HB1006.2.html We may have won a small battle January 20th, 2012; however, we have not yet won the war...100s of people showed up at the Public Hearing for HB 1006 to oppose this bill. Friday, January 20, 2012 by 9:30 am we as a group occupied the entire basement of the State House (i.e., standing room only in every room, corridor, and hallway). The Committee for Employment, Labor and Pensions were not prepared for the turn-out of Cosmetologist & Barbers. We can do it again! Highlights... The Committee for Employment, Labor and Pensions had an Advisory Committee R.O.E.C. “Regulation Occupation Evaluation Committee” was create by the House of Representatives General Assembly (i.e., to research all the State Boards and Commissions in as far back as 2010) and the report is due by July 1st each year. After R.O.E.C. concluded their research and presented their findings before the House of Representatives December 2011 Session deadline. R.O.E.C. recommended that (4) Boards and Commissions be deregulated. After the deadline on January 6th, 2012 the Committee for Employment, Labor and Pensions decided to attach the deregulation of these (4) Boards and Commissions to the already existing “RIGHT-TO WORK BILL. R.O.E.C. tried to justify their findings of why we don’t need to be regulated by the State Government. I realized that they had not really done their homework. Not enough research on Cosmetology & Barber. (See Questions) and (Our Answers) 1. Just because you’re not licensed…does that mean that your profession is not important? Answer: It is important to us to be more than certified. We worked hard to get our license and it would make it impossible to relocate into a state that requires a license to transfer and work. 2. Just because you’re not licensed…Does it mean that the consumer will lose the quality of services? Answer: In our profession we perform many corrective services, because for some reason a non-professional has screwed up the procedures and the result were not favorable to the consumer. 3. Just because you’re not licensed…Are the fees worth the license? Answer: Yes! We are willing to pay a higher licensing fee if the result is better state regulation of our profession (i.e., State cost to do business by the IPLA is $$216,376.00 annually. State revenue is $1,441,000.00). You do the math! (1)Where is the offset of $1,224,624.00? (2)What is being done with it? 4. Just because you’re not licensed…What would consumers lose? Answer: The consumer is at risk of losing their sight (malpractice injury), their money (no liability), their hair (chemical treatment), their life (paralyzed or death from massages) etc… 5. Just because you’re not licensed…Would you lose customers? Answer: Yes, if we cannot compete with the prices of “Kitchen Curls”, “Back Room Relaxers” and Over-the-Counter Colors. 6. Just because you’re not licensed…Is the occupation worthy? Answer: We perform services that require customer satisfaction that allows them to be unique as they present their selves to the world. 7. If licensing is eliminated…will it cause harm? Answer: It will create a chain reaction of loses to the entire Beauty Industry. (See loses) Tax-Revenue-produced for $700,000,000 (lost by the state) Beauty & Barber Schools (out of business) Master Educators (jobs lost) Professional Salons (out of business) Licensed-Practitioners (jobs lost) Professional Product-Manufacturers (out of business) Professional Product-Distributors (jobs lost) Insurance Companies-Malpractice/Liability or Full Spectrum Insurance (lose in revenue) Sense of Security-Receiving Services by a trained licensed professional. Apprenticeships-I personally will not train anyone advance techniques if the end result is not a professional license and career (lose in revenue) New Business Openings-The advance training of new entrepreneurs (new jobs) 8. If licensing is eliminated…can’t you regulation your profession? Answer: We want better regulation by the state government, and so do our clients. Because it only cost $216,376.00 if we are bringing in almost $1.5 million in revenue…We deserve it. PLEASE CALL Governor Mitch Daniels Office (317) 232-4567 or call 1 (800) 382-9842 Indiana State House of Representatives to help stop them from eliminating the Cosmetology & Barber, Nail Technician, and many other industry professions. Stuart Hobson Modernization and ExpansionWe need to let the Mayor and City Council know that the modernization and expansion of Stuart Hobson Middle School is of critical importance to our community. The city has allocated $34 million to Hobson in the capitol budget over the next 7 YEARS! We have a complete Master Plan for the school that can be implemented now for $34 million. We are asking that they move up the money allocated for Stuart Hobson so that the full Master Plan can be completed in the next 2 years.309 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Caryn Ernst

Longfellow: Let Kate Dunn inRecently, Longfellow Middle School has asked Kate Dunn to leave school for up to a month because she "scares people" when she faints. If this claim was true, we would have no protest. But, nobody minds in the slightest and we all think it is very unfair to not let her come to school for something that is totally out of her control, nothing should get in the way of a person wanting to learn.197 of 200 SignaturesCreated by James

Students Are Adults When They Are 18 Years of AgeThe Federal Department of Education requires students up to the age of 24 (unless they are married or veterans) to involve thier parents in the financing of their higher education. It is nearly impossible to get declared "independent" and the student has to either get a co-signer for a student loan or their parent has to take out a "Parent Plus" loan. Many of us are unable to do this for our children as we are the generation who waited to have them until we were in our late 30s and are therefore saving as much as possible for our upcoming retirements. Personally I have had to tell my children no to either a Parent Plus loan or co-signing a loan due to the impact these would have on my credit worthiness. This has made it nearly impossible for them to attend college. This must be stopped! We are not responsible for our children after they become adults at 18. They can vote, own property, join the military etc. Therefore they should be responsible enough to pay for thier own educations. Please sign this petition to lower this arbitrary age limit to 18 and ask the Dept of Education to change these loand to "Undergraduate Plus" loans, taken out by the student, not their parents.14 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Victoria Sutherland

Better Pay for Adjuncts: Stop our ExploitationTeacher working conditions are student learning conditions. Adjuncts teaching college students have more than doubled since 1970. Today, contingent faculty teaches 75% of classes nationwide, yet we are paid shamefully little in comparison to our tenured or tenure track counterparts. According to the Coalition on the Academic Workforce (http://www.academicworkforce.org/CAW_portrait_2012.pdf), on average, we are paid $2700 per course with no benefits. Multiply this by a full load of courses per year, and what do we get? Of course, we usually have limits on courses too. So as you can see, we do not get a living wage! We have almost no chance for advancement, we have insecure continuity with our semester-to-semester schedule, and we have relatively little say on anything pertaining to our university or college. Moreover, because we are compensated so unequally, we need to hold several teaching positions in order to support ourselves, making our workload unfeasible. How can we survive? If you want a better education for students, then you must demand better pay and status for the majority of faculty teaching in today's institutions of higher education across the country. Demand better salaries for the underpaid and undervalued adjuncts, the contingency labor force that teaches most of the imperative core classes students need in order to succeed in today's competitive academic climate.10,465 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Ana Maria Fores Tamayo
