Well now it’s 30 years later and this scandal has gotten 10 times worse. But the toilet is just the tip of the iceberg. The reality is that the Pentagon is so cozy with defense contractors that this kind of corruption runs rampant. And they’re getting fat with taxpayer money. This week Tim Mapes resigned as Executive Director of DPI at the request of DPI Chair Michael J. Madigan. A member of Madigan's staff accused Mapes of making inappropriate remarks to her and of ignoring complaints of sexual harassment by lawmakers and others that were brought to his attention by House staffers. This is the latest in a long string of harassment, intimidation, and cover-up allegations made against DPI staff and ILGA members. Tell Bigoted Irmo, South Carolina Mayor to Resign Hardy King, the Mayor of Irmo, South Carolina is unapologetically posting bigoted memes and links on his Facebook account. In a story posted in the Daily Beast, King seems proud of his history of anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, pro-Confederacy and racist Facebook posts. He told Columbia TV station WLTX, “If it causes some terrorist grief I do not apologize, nor do I believe they give a rip. If it caused some liberal troll to go bonkers, so what.” One of his anti-immigrant posts includes “Facts!” such as: • “95% of Warrants issued for Murder in Los Angeles are for Illegals” • “More than 66% of ALL births in California are to Illegals on Medi-Cal.” Of course, none of these “facts” are true. A mayor has to represent all of the people in her or his community. Hardy King has proven that he does not care about the minority groups in Irmo. It is clear that he cannot do the job of mayor. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness are guaranteed rights from the Bill of Rights. We, as US citizens, have these unalienable rights according to this document. More often than not, we as US citizens, are being denied these rights. Life is threatened by poor health care options; we have to decide to pay for prescription medication or pay for food. Hospital costs have skyrocketed with the increase in for-profit entities, we avoid going to a hospital for fear of the final bill. Pharmaceutical CEOs arbitrarily raise the price of life-saving drugs for more profit, we have to decide if our deductible will cover which drugs. Liberty has been taken away by the militarization of our peace officers in response to the increased threat of violence that is perpetuated by an industry that lives for violence. Our children are being slaughtered by the use of war-time weapons made all too easily available. Our citizens are being randomly sacrificed for profits. Happiness has been reduced to moment to moment instances because we have to settle for a working wage not enough to provide for basic necessities. Housing costs are such a burden that our citizens cut costs on utilities which costs them their lives while trying to stay warm/cool. U.S. Legislators are paid lifetime benefits after one year of office with guaranteed pensions and lifetime healthcare. This must stop. A "living wage" must be instituted with a standard non-guaranteed 401k, non-extendable healthcare with deductibles, and a term limit for all. Paid patriotism is causing a divide in the nation. This practice is not improving recruitment and those funds can be better used to support the troops and their families.

Over the past year, the candidates have run positive campaigns based on our shared values. We commend the candidates for their positivity and camaraderie. Negative attacks by candidates or by outside groups are likely to lead to additional negative attacks from all directions as candidates fight back to protect themselves. This would change the entire tenor of the Primary and weaken the Democratic nominee against John Faso. This is truly the most important election of our lifetimes, and Democrats must commit now more than ever to standing unified and empowered against attempts to divide us.

This will help limit corruption by powerful lobbyists who line the pockets of career politicians for favorable outcomes. It will also help prevent lazy elections.
