The sequester has brought with it many problems. One problem is furloughed government employees not getting paid when on furlough. But, Congress gets paid whether they work or not. ( They go on furlough a lot) Like all other government employees when they don't work they should not get paid.

Congress should not be able to insulate itself from the effects of the laws it passes, nor be able to pass other laws to lessen the negative impact of a law on its members.

A year ago, President Obama signed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act into law at a celebratory ceremony attended by a bipartisan cast of lawmakers.The law wouldn't just outlaw trading on nonpublic information by members of Congress, the executive branch and their staffs, it would greatly expand financial disclosures and make all of the data searchable so insider trading and conflicts of interest would be easier to detect. The president signed a bill reversing big pieces of the law and it barely made print media news, There was no fanfare when the Senate and then the House passed the bill in largely empty chambers using a fast-track procedure known as unanimous consent. In the House, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., shepherded the bill through. It was Friday afternoon at 12:52. Many members had already left for the weekend or were on their way out. The whole process took only 30 seconds. There was no debate. NPR reported that "There weren't too many members of Congress who were aware of this legislation," says Craig Holman, the government affairs lobbyist for Public Citizen. "And I suspect very, very few understood what a sweeping radical change it is to the STOCK Act." When was the last time Congress acted so quickly and so cooperatively? The New Hampshire House recently passed HCR 2—asking Congress for a constitutional amendment that clarifies that corporations are not people. The Senate has not yet taken up the resolution. In fact, a prohibitive two-thirds vote is being required just for the Senate to consider this resolution—even though it has already passed the House. We should urge the Senate to act on this resolution!

The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act addressed the loophole requiring lawmakers and government officials to post their financial transactions online. Last week members of the senate and house quietly repealed the act.

Congress jumped into action last week to protect air travelers – such as themselves – from long airport delays caused by sequestration cuts, but they’ve shown no sympathy for the millions of Americans without a frequent flyer card. Air travel and ending the furloughs at the FAA are important, but the haphazard sequestration cuts are hitting the middle class and our most vulnerable the hardest: with seniors denied access to Meals on Wheels, cancer patients denied treatment, low-income children being kicked out of Head Start, and cuts to unemployment insurance for the millions of Americans unable to find work. It's outrageous. No more balancing the budget on the backs of working families. No more paying for tax giveaways that benefit corporations and the super-wealthy with cuts to vital programs. Tell Congress to fix the sequester cuts for all Americans.

For 75 years, the Fair Labor Standards Act has ensured that hourly employees who work more than 40 hours a week are paid overtime pay. It only makes sense—if workers have to spend more time away from their families and on the job, they deserve to be fairly compensated. But John Boehner and Eric Cantor and others in Congress don’t see it that way. The deceptively named “Working Families Flexibility Act,” recently introduced in Congress, would eliminate overtime pay and instead replace it with “comp time,” which would be allocated days off, at the discretion of the employer. This may look nice at first glance, but what it does is encourage employers to force workers to work longer hours, and pay them less for it. Everyone deserves fair pay for the work they do. This bill would cut wages for millions and just make CEOs and Big Business richer. This bill is moving fast and your representative needs to hear from you now. We need you to send a message now and make sure he or she does the right thing and opposes this bill.
