  • Protecting Seniors Living in Home Healthcare Facilities in Wisconsin
TAM LAWRENCE, LOBBYIST For several years, I trusted a home health care provider to care for my mom after a series of strokes my mother needed 24hr care. For the first 5yrs we received cares; as the business owner continued to open up more homes- the service declined and her staff went along with it. Unfortunately, my mom has for too long endured the abuse and neglect provided by Willowcrest Turner's Point Community Residential Facility located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On March 31, 2019 when I found my mother in a closed room sitting in a pool of urine, she had been in this condition for at least several hours. When I confronted the caretaker she agreed my mom was in this condition for over 2 hours [i have video] of her statement. Thereafter, I called the owner of the Community Residential Based Facility she stated, " I can not control what those people do over there. You have to do, what you got to do! We've been going through this for sometime and the state will not define this as abuse, your mother does not have any skin breakdowns nor does she have skin issues." - stated Kim Turner the owner of Willowcrest ll Turner's Point On one too many occasions the owner of WILLOWCREST TURNER'S POINT has played the victim and rather than fix what's wrong with her business's model- she'd rather complain about there not being suitable caregivers in MILWAUKEE WISCONSIN for her to hire. In efforts, to derail me from contacting the governing bodies or removing my mom she stated - it's a problem for basically everyone in the business in MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN so my mom in most cases would be treated the same or even worse if relocated. Her candid remarks, would normally make me feel a sense of hopelessness in which case I'd freeze up in fear. However, on April 1st 2019 I refused to be treated like a FOOL any longer and found assistance from the staff at St. Anne Day Service. I got my mom out! Let's make sure our seniors are protected - In closing, there needs to be tough laws, jail time, fines and the termination of licensing for those who abuse and neglect our seniors

  • Medicare for All!
Health care should be a basic right for everyone in the United States. It's a national shame that so many Americans have to choose between lifesaving health care and going into debt or bankruptcy, especially during a pandemic that has shown how vulnerable we all are. Despite Trump packing the court with far-right judges, the Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act, so we're no longer in immediate danger of our healthcare being ripped away from millions of people. Now is the time to expand coverage even further and continue to erase generations of inequality in our healthcare. Over half of all Democrats in the House of Representatives already support Medicare for All. There is real momentum. Everyone deserves quality healthcare, no matter their ability to pay.

  • RACISM MEETS CRITERIA FOR THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH
From gun violence to universal healthcare, no field of endeavor or conflict in this country is untouched by the legacy of racism manifest by our American destiny. Despite scholarly and established work to the contrary, CDC cries "No evidence-based best practices to address it" as an excuse not to do their job, so the people must demand it. I have seen the stress of loss of privilege, the minute daily drips of intangible "microaggressions" and the gaping wounds of bullets; I took an oath and DO NO HARM is not enough. We're also on Twitter and would ask folks to tweet Trevor Noah and other prominent folks who "have the mic"! @Right2healthNow

  • Awareness for the disease Avascular Necrosis (AVN)
There are thousands of people of all ages that have been affected by this rare disease including myself called Avascular necrosis. This disease goes through several different stages and can often be overlooked or misdiagnosed. Unfortunately I am one of the many that was not diagnosed early enough to prevent having my hips replaced because of it. Some of the factors that cause this are the excessive use of alcohol, steroids, trauma, sickle cell anemia, arthritis and lupus. All of these can contribute to blood loss from bone. Although it is unknown exactly what causes this condition. Avascular necrosis can also occur without any conditions of these risk factors being present. All of the bones in the body can be affected by Avascular necrosis. It can render the person to be in severe pain as well as lead to deterioration of the joints. The femur bone in the thigh is most commonly affected, causing pain in the hip and knee. Also the ankles, shoulders, and jaw are also commonly affected by this disease too. Avascular necrosis can occur in more than one part of the body during its life long course of the condition, either at the same or different times. I have designed and created an awareness ribbon for this silent rare disease. The colors of the ribbon are blue (faith), green (hope) and purple (peace). I created the ribbon in 2014.

  • Promote legislation to prevent public schools from starting before 8 a.m.
Many high schools today start school in the 7 o'clock hour, a practice started several decades ago to save money by recycling school bus runs. Now considerable research confirms that these school start times are inconsistent with sleep needs of teenagers and young adults and are seriously undermining school performance as well as children's health and welfare. Because politics, money, and other logistical issues inevitably keep most school systems from changing start times, we need a national minimum start time for all public schools to make it easier for communities to do what's best for the safety, health, and learning of all children of every age when they set local schedules.

  • "Protect Our Kids: Say NO to Seattle Public Schools' Gamble with Student Mental Health!"
We’re asking the Seattle School Board to prioritize our kids’ safety and well-being over questionable business deals. By signing this letter, you’re helping ensure our students get real, safe, and effective mental health support. Here are the reasons why our collective action is important:  • Student Well-Being at Risk: This partnership with Talkspace could compromise the quality and safety of mental health support for our children. • Privacy Concerns: Potential risks to students’ sensitive personal data. • Financial Accountability: Why is this money being spent on a for-profit company with questionable practices instead of proven local solutions and partnerships? This is not an investment in our students or our community. Here are the reasons why this action is urgent: This partnership potentially impacts the mental health of over 55,000 students in Seattle. Partnering with a company like Talkspace could mean putting profit over care, leaving vulnerable kids without the support they need. If we don’t act now, this could set a precedent for future decisions that prioritize cost over quality in our schools.

  • Campaign to Save the Therapy Pool at Cottage Rehab
Without this therapy pool, generously underwritten by the Alice Tuohy Foundation, our quality of life is vastly diminished. The new pool under construction in Goleta will be wonderful, but it will be very difficult for many of us to make that journey. With our aging population, Santa Barbara should have no trouble utilizing two (2) therapy pools! Their are so few heated therapy pools in California, we feel each is a treasure!  Even if you are not now using the pool for therapy, you may need it in the future.  We hope you can find a way to make retaining the existing, wonderful De la Vina pool possible.
