  • Tell Secretary Nielsen: Stop separating families!
“I just want to know where my daughter is and that she is safe. She’s two years old, and it’s been two months since we were separated—I don’t know why we were separated. I don’t understand. We came here to seek help, we were afraid for our lives.” -Father, seeking asylum and being held in an adult immigration detention center at the U.S. southern border in August 2017. Described as “very depressed” due to the separation by his housing mates to WRC. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under Secretary Nielsen’s leadership has been tearing children apart from their parents to scare others from coming to our borders. There’s no justification for this practice. These families and children aren’t threats to our safety. They’re often fleeing unspeakable violence and persecution in their home countries. Many are from Central America, home to some of the most dangerous countries in the world. The administration has claimed that they must separate children from their parents to protect them. But policies exist for protecting children—and separating them from their parents is not the way. There’s no security crisis either. Border apprehensions are at decades-low levels, according to the government’s own data. It’s cruel to punish parents who are doing everything they can to protect their children and to punish children by depriving them of their parents. Separating a child from a mother or father only leads to more trauma for all. Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare. DHS shouldn’t play politics with families to try to discourage people from seeking protection, and there’s no legal basis for doing so either. Family unity is one of our core values and is reflected in our laws. Our government has a responsibility under U.S. immigration law to hear a person’s immigration or asylum case, not to try to scare them away from asking for help. Doing so puts these families at extremely high risk of experiencing further rights violations. Separating families is also expensive. By some estimates, the government practice of detaining mothers and children apart from each other would cost taxpayers an average of $327 million per year. And keeping families locked up together is also expensive and cruel, when there are cost efficient and effective alternatives to detention. That money won’t make our country safer; it would only waste taxpayer dollars. Separating families or keeping them locked up in detention is NOT a solution. It won’t make us safer or stop people from seeking protection when they have no other option. It’s not who we are. Sign this petition to tell Secretary Nielsen to stop separating families at the border once and for all. Children belong with their parents in safe communities, not locked up in detention centers. We are better than this. This petition is sponsored by Al Otro Lado, Alianza Americas, Amnesty International USA, Kids in Need of Defense, Latin America Working Group, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, MomsRising, National Immigrant Justice Center, Women’s Refugee Commission

  • Immigration
Put a stop to the mistreatment of immigrants just because of their legal status here in the U.S. With this petition I want everyone who isn't aware of the fact to know that we are all equal and deserve the same chances and in this case a chance at the "American Dream".

  • Tell Congress to increase the number of H2B visas and that it is a labor issue NOT an immigration...
I have been personally effected by this issue. We could not handle the work without our H2B workers in 2017 and the company lost half of its revenue, a quarter of its customers and a valuable American exmployee. This year we are in the same position. The following link explains well my experience: http://fox8.com/2018/02/25/local-landscapers-worried-about-having-workers-this-summer/ The issue is complex and involves rules set in place by Congress. At the most the number of foreign seasonal workers would be 120,000 spread all throughout the country. My goal is to teach people that it is a labor issue - NOT an immigration issue. Please tell Congress to allow seasonal businesses to use the H2B visa by increasing the number of visas available to us. Right now we are basically in a lottery system and if we lose (by not getting the visas), we might go out of business...

  • Stop Separating Families: Stop Felix Garcia’s Deportation!
Felix Garcia is a longtime Georgia resident, an aspiring American, and the father of three daughters, including a medical student and a young U.S. citizen. Earlier this year, during a regular annual check-in, Felix was detained by ICE with no explanation. Felix has lived in the U.S. since 1995 and has no criminal record. Despite all of his contributions and efforts, Felix has never had a path to legal status in the United States, and now he faces permanent separation from his family. ICE under the Obama Administration did not see Felix as a threat or a deportation priority, and allowed him to stay with his family as long as he checked in annually. But under the Trump Administration, parents like Felix who have done nothing besides live in the country without papers are being taken away. Felix is an accountant and originally came to the United States seeking asylum. His oldest daughter Belsy is a Dreamer and medical student in Chicago who plans to return to Georgia as a physician and work in underserved communities. Atlanta ICE Office Director Sean Gallagher can stop Felix's deportation. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) can use the power of his office to draw attention to Felix’s case. Tell Director Gallagher and Rep. Loudermilk to use their power to make sure Felix stays with his family! We need to do everything we can to stop Donald Trump's unchained ICE agents from taking Felix away from his home and family in Georgia. Sign this petition and urge Rep. Loudermilk and Director Gallagher to take action and stop Felix's deportation.

  • Release Alejandra Pablos
Alejandra's case is complicated. As a young person she was arrested and convicted of several charges, including Driving Under the Influence and possession of drug paraphernalia, some of which were felonies under Arizona state law. In 2011, after she complied with the orders from the court, she spent 2 years at the Eloy Detention Center in Southern Arizona, lost her residency, and was placed in deportation proceedings. But since Alejandra was released from detention she has worked to advocate for human and civil rights, dedicating her life to organizing against the attacks on immigrant rights and fighting for reproductive rights. As part of her local organizing, in early January of this year, as Alejandra was leading chants at a peaceful protest in Virginia outside of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), she was singled out and detained by DHS agents. Although she was released, this flagged her case. When Alejandra showed up to her check-in with ICE in Tucson, she was taken into custody and not allowed to pay a bond. Alejandra is a nationally recognized immigrant rights and reproductive rights, activist. She works as a Field Coordinator for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, where she organizes to raise the voices of Latinas in Virginia for policy change at all levels of government on issues that impact their lives, women’s health care, and other social justice issues. Alejandra has been a staunch advocate for immigration reform and mass incarceration. She is a member of Mijente, a national political Latinx organization, and has worked with many immigrant rights and prison abolition organizers throughout the country.

  • Stand with California Leaders Against Jeff Sessions' Attack on Immigrants
Today, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that he was suing the state of California over pro-immigrant laws that protect Californians against the overreaches and abuses of Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). Jeff Sessions' lawsuit against California, the most immigrant-populous state, is simply the Trump Administration's latest attack on the immigrant community. Immigrant-friendly policies like the California "Values Act" makes everyone safer by promoting trust between immigrants and local law enforcement officials. Furthermore, courts have repeatedly ruled that the Trump Administration's policies on detaining immigrants are unconstitutional. But Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump don’t seem to care. California Governor Jerry Brown referred to Jeff Sessions' attacks on his state were nothing more than a "political stunt." Attorney General Sessions is seeking to undermine due process and state policies dedicated to protecting diverse communities. The United States is a nation of immigrants and this lawsuit tramples on American values. Please sign this petition thanking California leaders for and letting them know that we stand with them in supporting immigrants.
