• Stop Cal-Am Inc. from Evicting 400 home park residences.
We, over 1200 residents of Heritage Village Manufactured Home Park in Beaverton, Oregon, are being unconscionably forced from our homes so that Property Managers can generate more profit by leveling our structures and replacing them with new homes. Many of us are disabled, elderly on fixed incomes or otherwise unable to upgrade our properties within the 30 day time period demanded by unscrupulous management. We agree that beautification efforts are a plus and do support community improvements, however, terminations for house colors, picket fencing, faded posts, firewood placement, etc is not only wrong but is harassing and exposes the worst aspects of business greed.

  • Pierce Co Auditor: Put a ballot box in Tillicum!
In the 2012 election, registered voters from Tillicum turned out at a 10 percent lower rate than the rest of Pierce County. Voters from this community have expressed time and again that having a ballot box in their neighborhood will make it much more likely that they participate in our democracy. We need a ballot box in Tillicum now.

  • Karl Brabenec: Drop Out!
The race for the 98th Assembly seat has taken a turn that defies belief. Karl Brabenec has proven himself unfit for office. Background- United Monroe is a grassroots political movement based in Monroe NY. It has a board of directors that vote on political endorsements. It began 4 years ago when the Monroe government bought a movie theater over the objections of the residents. It has since grown into a political movement that has stopped the KJ annexation, overturned a corrupt Monroe town board, sued to open up election practices in Orange County and 2 years ago garnered over 9000 votes for its Assembly candidate. That election put United Monroe on the map as a political force that must be reckoned with as a counter weight to the Bloc vote coming out of the village of Kiryas Joel. United Monroe is not an official political party like the Republican or Democratic Party. In order to obtain that status a Party must obtain a significant number of votes for Governor. United Monroe has never endorsed for Governor. United Monroe has always been about free and fair elections, open government, fighting corruption, protecting the environment, sustainable smart development, open space preservation, protecting our schools and giving every citizen the right to be represented by elected officials not beholden to corrupt voting Blocs that subvert the best interests of the population for their own benefit. It has been on the ballot each year since its founding as an independent party. United Monroe rejected the candidacy of Karl Brabenec. They felt that anyone who would vote not to empower the monitor of the East Ramapo School District with the power to help those children was unworthy of support. They felt that anyone who would stagger up to a microphone and tell a packed house of over 1000 people that making a decision on the Annexation of Town of Monroe land into the power of the corrupt religious oligarchy that is the Village of Kyrias Joel “is hard”, is unworthy of support. They felt that his sponsored bills were incompetent and his “me too” attachment to bills written by effective legislators was pathetic. United Monroe endorsed one of its founding members, John Allegro to run for the seat. United Monroe passed petitions for John Allegro to run for office under its banner, obtaining almost 2200 signatures. The chairwoman of United Monroe arrived at the Board of Elections today to turn in the petitions only to find that Karl Brabanec had already submitted petitions stealing the United Monroe name for his own. It seems logical to assume that he and his minions went door to door getting signatures by obfuscating the name of their supposed party or by claiming to be the United Monroe endorsed candidate. He is a thief. He is attempting to steal the good name and the good will of United Monroe. He knows that he is certain to lose the Republican Primary against John Allegro unless he can confuse the electorate about who he is and who supports him. The candidate willing to do anything to win is unworthy of the office he seeks. Reject Brabanec and everything he stands for. Corruption. Confusion. Spinelessness. Incompetence.

  • I challenge Donald Trump to take the naturalization test
Donald Trump announced yesterday that, if elected president, he would enact an extreme "vetting" test to determine if the values of those seeking to enter the U.S. are so-called American values. He claims his test would expose those who have "hostile attitudes" towards America. Yet we know that his proposal is fueled by racism and xenophobia. Our country already has a test immigrants take when they apply for citizenship—one that tests their knowledge of American history and civics. So, before Trump gets to propose a new, xenophobic test, I challenge him to take the one that already exists. I believe Trump would almost certainly fail this test, given his general ignorance and weak grasp of basic facts about American history, principles, and functioning of our government. His entire political career—beginning with his absurd and dangerous campaign to discredit President Obama—has been built around alienating other Americans. The fact is, Donald Trump is nothing more than a spoiled, unpatriotic drain on society who has earned nothing and helped no one.

  • Facebook: Stop censoring victims of police violence
Last week, Korryn Gaines was shot and killed in Baltimore County, Md., home after police arrived at her house to arrest her on traffic charges. Her 5-year-old son, who was in the home with her, was also shot. During the seven-hour standoff with police, Korryn continuously uploaded videos to Facebook and Instagram so that she could communicate with friends, family, and the public about what has happening to her and her child. But after police requested that Facebook, which also owns the media network Instagram, remove the videos, Korynn's account was deactivated and all her previous videos and posts were removed. Because anyone can document and expose police violence by uploading a video, social media has become one of the most powerful tools we have to fight police violence. Body cameras often fail, so video taken from eyewitnesses and victims is sometimes the only available record of what happened. This isn't the first time Facebook has censored victims—and as our country grapples with issues of systemic racism and police violence, silencing and censoring the communities impacted directly is a dangerous regression.

  • Recognize Indigenous Peoples Day in Boston
All over the country and throughout the Americas, cities and towns are ending the celebration of Columbus. He was certainly not a hero, nor did he “discover” a continent that was already inhabited by many millions of Indigenous Peoples. Columbus and his men were responsible for the rape, murder and enslavement of countless Native people. It’s time for Boston to join Cambridge, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque and many other cities and recognize Indigenous Peoples Day! Since the 1970s, Indigenous Peoples from throughout the Americas have sought to have Indigenous Peoples Day declared in October in place of Columbus Day. We consider it a first step in recognizing the genocide of millions of Indigenous people and the theft of their lands that began with the arrival of Columbus. Indigenous Peoples Day is much more than a name change. It is a refusal to allow the genocide of Indigenous Peoples to go unremembered. It is also an initial step in honoring and reconciling with present-day Native Peoples who live in and near Boston. Commemorating Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday in October is a recognition that we need to stop honoring false heroes such as Columbus and start honoring the Native Peoples on whose land we live and walk.
