Over 30 low-income families, nearly all of them Latino, are threatened with mass eviction by the Kittitas County, WA, Board of Commissioners, who have signed a purchase-and-sale agreement for the Shady Acres (Shady Brook) mobile home court and announced plans to evict or relocate all residents, in order to build a seasonal RV parking lot for the adjacent County Fairgrounds and Events Center. Most families own their manufactured houses, but these homes are old and cannot be safely moved. Housing specialists explain there is simply not sufficient affordable housing in the county to house these low-income families, who may face homelessness and destitution. It is vital that this tightly-knit, multigenerational community, in which residents provide a great deal of mutual support, be kept intact. Once the county announces the shut down of the park, residents legally have only 12 months to find new housing.

The City of Miami has recently banned the planting of any new Coconut Palms from Miami’s streets! The beautiful, graceful Coconut Palm has always been part of Miami’s colorful history, Miami’s culture, and Miami’s tropical image. Why did the City ban the Coconut Palm? They say it was for liability reason, to avoid falling coconuts, but that problem can be easily solved by allowing harvesters to pick the coconuts – which they’ve already been doing for years, for free, so they can then sell them to local restaurants and fruit stands. It’s a win-win situation. This ban on the coconut palm was done "in house" without public notice, a public hearing or public input. Please help keep the coconut in Coconut Grove and throughout Miami by signing the petition. It only takes a minute, and then it will be sent to Miami city officials. Democratic Congressional nominee, Jesse Smith, has accepted an invitation to a debate with Republican incumbent Mike Rogers held by WVTM 13. The debate will be held in Birmingham this October if and only if Rogers accepts the debate invitation. He has yet to do so. WVTM 13 is trying to give the voters an opportunity to make an informed decision, and the voters deserve that right. Mike Rogers has been hiding behind his incumbency for 14 years, and it's time to call him out. A representative must face those he represents. Time and again, Rogers has been called out to apologize or acknowledge voters, and he always fails to do so. Alabama Democrats, Progressives, and Independents can no longer stand for taxation without representation. Rogers is beholden to his donors, not his constituents. It's time to make him face the public and defend his poor record. What has Mike Rogers done for you in the last 14 years? We must hold our representatives accountable.
