• Re-Regulate Storefronts in NYC
New York is being overrun by chain stores, banks, nail salons and a sterile, ugly landscape. Small businesses are being kicked out one by one as their leases run out, because landlords can charge whatever they want with no regulation. Please help bring back the city we used to know and love.

  • Find workable solutions for the Musk-Ox that are continually harassing our people and killing our...
Since as long ago as 2005 the Musk-Ox have been coming into Nome's small community and not only becoming a nuisance & danger to the public, but harming our dogs that are secured on chains or in pens as well. Some incidences have resulted in severe injuries or death to the dogs. This threat to individual dogs and the mushing community has got to stop. We need to find workable solutions to the problem. Recently a Musk-Ox was killed as it threatened a community member’s dog. As it happened, a herd of musk ox had invaded Icy View and had dispersed into several people’s yards. Authorities have told us to "walk" the herds out of our areas; she tried doing this but to no avail. She yelled at them to get them to leave; she also fired a warning shot but they did not budge. She had already lost one dog to horrific goring and a painful death; she was not about to lose another. She did everything she should have before resorting to a weapon. As the Musk-Ox were fleeing her yard, one of them saw her dog and ran straight to it. It then proceeded to lower its head in what she viewed as an attempt to ram her pen to get to her dog. She called 911 before she shot the musk ox. Immediately after, she did the proper thing by notifying authorities that she had shot the musk ox. The musk ox was then processed by the help of community members and given to the senior center. Yet, wildlife authorities determined that she committed a crime by killing the Musk-Ox. This is nonsense and has got to stop. She should not have been charged with any crime; we have the right to protect our families of which dogs are a part, and we have the right to protect our property. Enough dogs have been injured and killed; we do not want children or any person to endure an attack, when a change WILL be made. Let’s do it before that happens. Help us change this situation and encourage The Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game, in Nome and Juneau Alaska, to find workable solutions to this ongoing problem by signing our petition.

  • Commuter Safety
The few bars that are open late put drunk drivers on the road at the same time as morning commuters. Closing the bars at 2 AM will also keep drunk people off the highway (between the 49th, Totem, and Northstar) at the time of heavier traffic. So drinking and commuting will be safer! My mother, Gitte Stryhn, an important member of this rural (ca. 1,000 -person) Alaskan community, was recently killed by a drunk driver that was leaving the Totem bar while she was bicycling to work. Only 1 bar is open until 5 AM. So only 1 bar will be affected by a 3-hour difference in closing time. Three bars are normally open until three or three-thirty, so they will close only an hour or an hour and a half earlier. One bar that stays open late only on very special occasions would only be able to stay open until two.

  • No Heliport in North Fork
Over 100 residents have voiced opposition to the construction of a heliport as it will disrupt the lifestyle of the Loudoun Valley. There is an existing helipad at the Leesburg Executive airport suitable for use. The Coalition to Keep Western Loudoun Peaceful has been started specifically for this effort.

  • Raise the age of sale for tobacco products on Oahu to 21!
Between the ages 18 to 21, young adults transition from trying tobacco products to becoming regular, daily smokers. On Oahu, the rate of smoking between the ages of 18-24 tripled from 8.6% in 2010 to 23.9% in 2011 and has continued to climb. These increasing rates among the youth are shocking. Please sign the petition and show Honolulu City Council your support for raising the age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21!

  • Moore County Bd of Commissioners: Call To Action!
Citizens, taxpayers, and volunteers at the Animal Center of Moore County hereby petition the Moore County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) to INVESTIGATE the unauthorized euthanasia of a cat and to immediately APPOINT under its sole authority an onsite Animal Advocacy Manager at the Animal Center of Moore County. The cat, Harlequin, was to be held for a possible foster home. She was euthanized July 2, 2014 by staff in direct defiance of orders from Animal Operations Interim Director Tami Golden. Ms. Golden, an Animal Center volunteer, and the shelter’s Volunteer Coordinator Betsy Ficarro promptly were made aware of the incident. All three expressed shock and disbelief and the incident was reported to others outside of ACMC. The news and outrage quickly enveloped the community. Ms. Ficarro had no direct involvement with the euthanasia. Coincidentally, she was relieved of her duties effective immediately July 9, 2014 without warning, and told her position had been eliminated; despite significant measurable accomplishments during her brief tenure. Other reasons for her termination subsequently offered by county management have been contradictory and unsubstantiated. This event and ensuing public comment have been reported (see: The Pilot links below) and was brought before the County Commissioners at its meeting July 15, 2014. The shelter manager and other staff currently remain in their positions and disciplinary action, if any, has not been made public. With respect to personnel laws, we feel that residents and volunteers deserve an investigation and explanation from our elected officials and county management team in response to this abhorrent act of defiance. To ensure that the Animal Center and its animals are fairly represented and to provide reasonable checks and balances, we petition the BOCC to appoint an independent Animal Advocacy Manager who will serve under its direct authority. This person would report directly to the BOCC, have unrestricted access to all areas of the Animal Center with the right to visit anytime, unannounced and to stay without limitations. Responsibilities of this position may include, but not be limited to, ensuring clean conditions at the shelter, handling all complaints from the public, and creating and maintaining an effective working relationship with animal rescue organizations, animal welfare groups and humane societies. Macomb County, MI, has instituted such a position to serve as a model. We also feel that Betsy Ficarro should be given fair and due consideration for the position as her experience, accomplishments and ongoing commitment to animal welfare have remained beyond reproach. Please sign our petition if you support this call for transparency and accountability by the Board of County Commissioners to investigate, report and act on these issues involving the Animal Center of Moore County. • Tell Republicans to Ban Hate Groups from Testifying as "Experts" Before Congress
"Being hung, drawn, and quartered" is probably "too good" for President Obama -- that's what Stephen Steinlight, the Senior Policy Analyst for the Center for Immigration Studies, recently said. In discussing Speaker Boehner’s plans to sue the President, Steinlight said that “there’s no court that’s going to stop Obama from doing anything,” adding: "We all know, if there ever was a president that deserved to be impeached, it’s this guy. Alright? And I wouldn’t stop. I would think being hung, drawn, and quartered is probably too good for him." Mr. Steinlight's comments are outrageous and what's even more outrageous is that Steinlight’s group is popular with House Republicans, especially the current and former chairs of the House Judiciary Committee Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Lamar Smith (R-TX), who regularly invite CIS to testify at immigration hearings. CIS staffers have even been known to work hand in glove with Republican members of Congress. And it's not just these comments that are problematic. CIS has strong ties to a shady group called "FAIR" which is recognized as a Hate Group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Organizations with strong ties to hate groups should never be called to testify as expert witnesses at Congressional hearings. Somethings should just go unsaid -- and this is one of them! Yet, Republicans do it all of the time. Please join me in demanding that Republican leaders put an end to "experts" with strong ties to hate groups testifying in Congressional hearings.
