  • Support for a nut ban in Agawam public schools
My child, along with many other children, has very dangerous and deadly allergies. Going to the school system and fighting them at the administration level seems to give me the impression they are resistant. I'm not sure why. Maybe it requires a little extra work? Regardless of the reason. My child's safety is just as important as the next. And I will NOT allow my child to be a statistic !

  • Emergency Responce Protocol Enhancement
On Wednesday the 14th of May, 2014, my fiancee, Nancy Gale Smith was involved in a serious multi-car accident. I witnessed the tragic event. I was at our car in less than a minute. While she was not responsive to my voice, I observed her chest rising and falling. Two other men also checked and found a pulse. She had a pulse for approximately 3 minutes while I was on the phone with 911. I informed the 911 operator that the doors were jammed and she was not breathing. When EMS arrived, they did not drive up to the only vehicle with serious damage, instead they stopped 50 to 75 yards up the road. I ran towards them pleading for help. They responded in a casual manner. They did not carry any medical equipment as they slowly walked to the car Nancy was trapped in. The only thing they did was check for a pulse and then call a signal seven (it's a code used to officially pronounce someone dead.) When I saw an EMS put a towel over Nancy's head, I asked them repeatedly to just remove her from the car and at least try to revive her. The lead paramedic answered every plea to help her with the same generic line, "she's suffered too much trauma." The only wound that I could see was a slight cut to her upper shoulder. I pleaded again and again for the paramedics to just try. Again and again they refused. I have since tried to determine what trauma Nancy could have suffered that was so obvious to the paramedics, buy county officials will not cooperate. We are seeking petitions to give to proper authorities so that the response of this accident can be investigated and the lead paramedic be called upon to answer specifically why he refused to offer any medical aid to Nancy Gale Smith. We also must know how many other car accident victims have been refused aid due to such a vague and incompetent EMS response protocol. If these serious protocol errors are not investigated and justice is not rendered, the next time it could be your wife, husband, daughter, or other loved one that lies helpless in a car while Polk County Rescue members refuse to help and never have to answer for their inaction

  • CUOMO MUST DEBATE!
Debates are a vital part of our democratic process. As a law student focused in public service I’m learning that a clean government is worth much more than we give credit. Democracy is more than a word, or an ideal, it’s action! And it’s worth preserving. The costs of corruption are often hidden, buried inside our tax bill, our rent, or the prices we pay in the store. Democracy is not a Coronation. Debates matter and part of a transparent, uncorrupt, legitimate democracy. It is time to refocus the candidate debate away from political posturing in favor of political responsibility. We need to hear how our candidates respond when probed by people who either disagree with them or who simply want them to clarify their positions or provide more detail. Gov. Cuomo has every reason to refuse to a debate with primary challenger Zephyr Teachout. The conventional wisdom has always been that the candidate leading in the polls has fewer reasons to participate, especially when he has a $35 million war chest. But, shouldn’t the fact that a citizen of New York, and a resident of Harlem wants to ask both candidates questions and hear their unscripted answers, be reason enough to participate in such a debate? Isn’t that what democracy looks like. I’m a law student part of a Public Interest Law and Ethics program called Stein Scholars at Fordham University School of Law. The program competitively selects students and trains them for future careers in the public sphere. I live in Harlem, NY.

  • The most racist mailer of 2014
Joe Miller is a candidate for United States Senate in Alaska, and his campaign just sent the most overtly racist mailer of the 2014 election cycle. The mailing shows pictures of Mexican gang members with facial tattoos, and says that his Democratic opponent "wants them to vote." It continues, "And if 20 million illegals vote, you can kiss the 2nd amendment goodbye." This is way worse than politics as usual in the immigration debate. It’s dog-whistle racism — using common racial stereotypes to stir up fear of minorities. Joe Miller's underlying message is that no matter how educated, accomplished, or hardworking Latinos are, they will never be anything more than threatening gang members. The racism was so obvious that even one of his Republican primary opponents called him out on it during a debate. But Miller just doubled down on his cartoonish racism, saying, “It’s true. This is real world stuff.” Joe Miller reinforces this awful tradition, sending a perverse message that it’s ok to use these tactics because they’re just politics. But it’s not just politics: when immigrants — and anyone deemed to look like one — are dehumanized, it has real world effects on how Latinos are treated. Join us in saying "¡Ya Basta!" to electoral racism. Sign the petition asking Joe Miller to apologize for his racist portrayal of Latinos.

  • Support a Recreational Center in Telluride!
Recreation Centers are oftentimes the heart and soul of a community. It is a huge priority for this community, our children and ultimately the health of our economy. Many children from local working families do not have the opportunities to be in after school activities or summer camps every day, year-round. These children are often limited to the library, which is trying to adapt to this need, but is not an ideal solution, and their programming is tapped out. We are an active community and there are more healthy, stimulating alternatives that we are not providing our children - playing games on a computer is not serving our children. Being a progressive community that cares about its children, it is an extreme disservice that we are not providing our community, our children and our visitors with year-round access to a public pool, a track, etc. Recreation Centers serve as affordable and year-round places for people to exercise, for children to recreate and hone various sports and skills, and for family and friends to spend time together. They are also a valuable amenity to the region, as they provide residents a better quality of life, increase property values, attract tourists, and help to bring the community together. Let's start the dialogue to get a Rec Center here in Telluride...we are one of the only resorts left in Colorado that doesn't have one and now is the time!

  • Stop the Pig Wrestling event at the Utah County Fair.
Wrestling a pig in mud is cruel and in humane and it sends out the wrong message to society. Young people watching this event think that it is okay to abuse innocent animals. Pigs are very sensitive animals and the very act of 4 people chasing them and putting them into a barrel is extremely stressful. The pigs are easily injured and emotionally traumatized. I am asking you to cancel this Animal Abuse.

  • Dem Hickenlooper & Rep Beauprez: Debate your opponents
The people of Colorado need to know as fully as possible the positions held by their candidates for Governor. Open, honest, face-to-face debates on the issues is one of the best ways to accomplish that. Democrat John Hickenlooper and Republican Bob Beauprez haven't agreed to debate at the University of Northern Colorado on Sept. 17 or the Arvada Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 18. Put the pressure on.
