My family, like millions of families with children with disabilities across the country, depends on the protections and supports offered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that allow our son with autism to attend public school, gaining the education and skills he needs to achieve his full potential in life. This generation of young people with disabilities and their families should not have to worry about a return to policies that systematically excluded and denied children like ours before this law was passed and enforced.

The United Nations is necessarily an imperfect human institution. It's basically a parliament whose members are governments. If the governments are far from Heaven, the UN isn't going to be magically angelic. But as Henny Youngman asked: "Compared to what?" Before the UN existed, the world was not better off. It was worse off. Some people in Washington are having an outrage festival because the UN Security Council - with the support of the Obama Administration - criticized illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. During her confirmation hearing to be the next U.S. ambassador to the UN, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley harshly condemned the Obama administration for allowing the UN Security Council to criticize Israel and pledged to never let it happen again if confirmed. She also said the U.S. should threaten to cut U.S. funding to the UN, which would violate a U.S. treaty obligation. [1] Senators Marco Rubio and Ben Cardin are pushing the same attack in S. Res. 6: bashing the UN Security Council for restating the international community's longstanding opposition to illegal Israeli settlements. On the night of January 6, when temperatures were below zero, Brian Carroll saved a homeless Vatterott student's life by providing him shelter in the campus library. The student had run out of his medication, and Carroll knew that if he did nothing, the student would likely die of exposure if he didn't get indoors during an ice storm that was hitting the Kansas City area. Vatterott's corpporate owners, TA Associates, fired Carroll as a direct result of his action that likely prevented this student from dying of hypothermia. Even though the student didn't damage the library or its property, and only stayed overnight, TA Associates refused to simply issue a disciplinary mark against Carroll and instead fired him outright. The world needs more compassionate people like Brian Carroll in positions of leadership, not less. This petition demands TA Associates not only give Carroll his job back, but raise his salary for his compassionate action that likely saved a student's life.

Petition for DeRidder Internet: Based on average prices, satellite internet is 72.5 Percent more costly than land based services, and only half as reliable. Huge portions of the DeRidder population resides outside of serviceable areas as of 1/18/17 with many roads having old lines, that are outdated. Companies who own the rights to these lines refuse service to residents of which the lines lay on or near their properties. For example, AT&T owns lines down SR 394 but say the lines are old, and they don't plan to replace them. Sugartown has quality high speed internet available throughout portions of their immediate area, but DeRidder doesn't offer service just 4 short miles from our super Walmart. This is a community issue, as many residents are forced into purchasing the more expensive and less reliable satellite internet in order to be connected to our quickly advancing world. Children in public schools of the DeRidder area are expected to have internet access for continuing education at home, as well as our large population of home schooled children. College students also need access to quality internet to pursue studies. These young residents are the future of our city, and without having access to the tools they need in this year of 2017 it could be detrimental to their studies. These are but a few examples of why this is so important. Change needs to happen, we need everyone's help. At this moment we have hundreds involved in petitioning for such change, and the numbers keep growing. Companies targeted in the petition include: Suddenlink, Cameron Communications, and AT&T. I was a Girl Scout growing up, and now I lead a Junior troop. I've been these girls' leader since they were 5-year-old Daisies, and it has been a rich, rewarding, and loving experience for me. I’m heartbroken to learn that GSUSA will be participating in the presidential inauguration this year. Donald Trump has repeatedly made statements that are not only antithetical to everything GSUSA purports to value, but which are directly harmful to women and girls. Tradition is not a justification for normalizing Donald Trump and his blatant misogyny. Just this week, nearly 60 members of Congress have announced they will not attend the inauguration. We aren't required to do things just because we've done them in the past. What we ARE required to do, as Girl Scouts, is live by the Girl Scout Law. You are failing to live by your law, GSUSA. Donald Trump has proven at every opportunity that he lacks even the most basic respect for women and girls. Traditions that hurt our girls must be broken. We look to you to model courage, confidence, and character and pull out of the inaugural parade.

Donald Trump’s EPA nominee, Scott Pruitt, has called the risks from climate change “speculative guess work” and said the debate is “far from settled.” Pruitt is a fossil fuel industry favorite, and he can’t be trusted. If he is confirmed, Pruitt could finish what he started while suing the EPA- tearing down the Clean Power Plan, and blocking the Clean Water Rule for good. Tell senators to listen to the majority of Americans who support climate action and oppose the nomination of Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator.

Tell the Senate to vote NO on Jeff Sessions for Attorney General Donald Trump’s nominee for the Attorney General, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, has called the additional C02 in the atmosphere “plant food” and “not really a pollutant. ” He is a climate change denier. He has voted against almost every environmental legislation since 1997. Sessions is not fit to be our nation’s top law enforcement official and cannot be trusted to ensure the rights of all are being safeguarded.

I know many people that can not afford health care and either just stay sick or go to the emergency room because they can't afford to go to the Doctor. It is unacceptable that we are one country that cares nothing for its citizens and thinks that people are expendable.

Felipe de Jesus Molina Mendoza (A# 206-252-347) is a proud graduate of Durham Public Schools. Felipe graduated from Riverside High School in 2009 with a 3.8 GPA with dreams of attending UNC Chapel Hill and majoring in nursing. Despite graduating from a North Carolina public school, Felipe was facing out-of-state tuition, a sum so great higher education became unrealistic. Left with no other option, Felipe returned to Mexico to continue his academic studies. Felipe faced discrimination and prejudice in Mexico, which led to a rapid decline in Felipe’s mental health. Felipe faced various instances of being persecuted, stalked and assaulted because of his sexual orientation. At one point, a group of men threw beer bottles at Felipe and his then boyfriend. Felipe reported the incident to the police but the police refused to act. Instead, these government officials blamed Felipe for holding hands with his boyfriend. Another time, Felipe and his boyfriend were stopped and frisked by the police and ordered not to kiss in public. With Mexican authorities refusing to protect Felipe, Felipe faced no other option but applying for asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. During Felipe’s time in detention, Felipe was targeted by detainees and officers. Felipe was harassed, intimidated and falsely accused. Felipe and other LGBT immigrants were, then, segregated in a cell in direct view of a detention officer. Despite the fact that Felipe’s life is in danger in Mexico, Felipe was ordered deported in March 2016 and an appeal is, currently, pending. Two months ago, Felipe enrolled at Durham Technical Community College. Felipe’s dreams were crushed, again, after receiving a deportation notice from Immigration & Customs Enforcement this past Christmas Eve. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, exercise favorable prosecutorial discretion and approve Felipe’s (A# 206-252-347) stay of removal.

The President elect, Mr. Donald J. Trump should NOT be sworn in as the 45th President of these United States of America. There are just too many problems that need to be solved before he takes office. 1) Did he, or any of his campaign staff, collude with Russia to subvert our recent election for POTUS? Is there material that Russia has to compromise Mr. Trump and can be used to blackmail him? 2) What is in Donald Trump's tax returns of the past 10 years (at least)? He refuses to show them. The "audit" he claims he is under should have no effect on his revealing them. 3) Can Mr. Trump be more diplomatic and less abrasive in using Twitter? So far he has shamed this country by his ill-advised antithetical use of "tweets." 4) Will he be able to work with our intelligence agencies? He has already done too much to delegitimize the very people we need to protect this country. Is this part of the plan to undermine this country and give more power to Vladimir Putin? 5) Will Donald Trump every divest himself from business ties so that he will not be influenced by them in opposition to what is best for America's interests? 6) Furthermore, will he comply with the emolument clauses of the Constitution, or be subject to break our laws on day one? To be fair he cannot do this in the 48 hours he has before his inaugural ceremonies. 7) Last but not least will he really change his behavior to help unite America or simply play to a voter base that is NOT IN THE MAJORITY. In the two months between Trumps winning the Electoral College votes and swearing-in, he has managed to lose support of too many Americans. He is being called "morally illegitimate" now. We need to be ever so sure that we are not turning this country over to a traitor that only sought the Presidency to feather his cap, get out of legal qualms and seek vengeance upon the current President. We need to know that he is NOT a puppet of Putin or any other foreign entity. It is our tradition to assume innocents until proven guilty, but where the Presidency of the United States is concerned, it is better to answer these concerns about Donald Trump instead of taking a leap of faith. We cannot afford to be wrong
