• House: Oppose Engel Bill Which Promotes Syria War & Undermines Iran Deal
New York Representative Eliot Engel, who voted for the Iraq war [1] and opposed the Iran nuclear deal [2], has introduced a bill that would undermine U.S. diplomacy to reduce violence in Syria, advocates further entangling the U.S. militarily in Syria's civil war, and would undermine the Iran nuclear deal. Engel's bill is opposed by the Obama Administration. The bill advocates for the U.S. to impose a "no fly zone" in Syria, an act of war. Hillary Clinton has noted that a "no fly zone" would mean that the U.S. would have to “take out all of the air defense, many of which are located in populated areas. So … you’re going to kill a lot of Syrians. So all of a sudden this intervention that people talk about so glibly becomes an American and NATO involvement where you take a lot of civilians.” [3] The Obama Administration opposes calls for the U.S. to impose a "no fly zone" in Syria. The Friends Committee on National Legislation, America's biggest peace and diplomacy lobby, notes that H.R. 5732 would "undermine its stated goal to encourage a negotiated political solution" and that "while the Obama administration has opposed H.R. 5732 on the grounds that it will undermine its Syria diplomacy, the bill could move to the House floor during the lame duck session in November." FCNL notes that the bill "would undermine the Iran nuclear accord (JCPOA) in various ways, but perhaps most importantly, this bill would re-impose some of the same sanctions that were lifted in the JCPOA in exchange for Iran’s nuclear concessions, further obstructing Iran from receiving the sanctions relief." [4] Urge your Representative to oppose H.R. 5732 by signing our petition. • Require the Health Department to inspect restaurant play areas
My 3-year-old son recently came down with thrush, impetigo, and hand, foot, & mouth disease all at once after visiting a McDonald's play place. This is the 4th time he has gotten very sick after visiting one. He has only been about 10 times total, so that is nearly half. I was shocked when trying to file a complaint with the health department to find that they are not required to inspect restaurant play places.

  • Justice for Zy'Keithean Bridgers
I'm starting this petition because for sixteen years I've been pursuing justice myself, contacting everyone from the President, lawyers, to house representatives without justice or help, and time is running out. Also, because my voice is trying to be silenced. I'm trying to let the American people know just how far corruption goes, and that you have a be a certain kind of person to receive justice.

  • Stand up for the Bureau Fighting Financial Scams
No matter what the news is on November 9th, Wall Street and its allies in Congress are gearing up to gut the main agency fighting financial scams. They will once again try to use the budget process during the “lame duck” Congressional session in November to undermine consumer protection and financial reform. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has recovered over $11 billion for Americans scammed by their financial company. At this very moment, the Bureau is making sure that Wells Fargo customers charged fees for fake accounts get refunds. Yet, no good deed goes unpunished: instead of praising the Bureau for their actions, the House Majority is using this opportunity to criticize the Bureau for not acting faster. That's rich coming from lawmakers who've supported bill after bill to slow the Bureau down. Wall Street hasn't just fought the CFPB in the halls of congress, they've taken it to the courts, trying to freeze the agency's work through lawsuits aimed at stymying the agency’s work. This month, a panel of three federal judges ruled 2-1 that the President can fire the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau without cause. This decision, which we expect to be overturned, is just the latest in a long line of attempts to hamstring the CFPB’s effectiveness. The attacks on the CFPB won’t stop after election day. Will you join us in urging Congress to stand up for the essential work of the CFPB?

  • Michael's Act: Save our children
I lost my youngest son to an overdose on September 28th. He was only 25. His older brother and I found him at home. No sibling or parent should ever have to experience this. Treatment and changes to laws must be made. All efforts must be made to bring the drug dealers and manufacturers of illegal drugs to justice. This is at epidemic proportion and not limited to any particular state. Imagine the heartbreak when you are told by law enforcement that the phone of your child, which most likely can lead them to the dealer, cannot be unlocked. I will forever miss and love my son. Please speak to your co-worker, neighbor, or family member as everyone knows someone who has been affected by this war on drugs. This issue involves each class and we need to demand that laws be changed to ensure the safety and well-being of loved ones.

  • .@POTUS: Stigmatize Russian Cluster Bombs in Syria
On June 16, 2014, Members of the House of Representatives voted to ban the U.S. transfer of cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia, [1] which has used them in civilian areas of Yemen, in violation of U.S. law. [2] The Obama Administration has said it has stopped the transfer of cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia. [3] The U.S. company that produced these bombs, Textron, has announced that it is getting out of the cluster bomb business, citing Administration and Congressional opposition to U.S. exports. [4] The current Russian-Syrian offensive in eastern Aleppo has used Russian cluster bombs. [5] Unfortunately, the U.S., like Russia and Syria, has still not signed the Cluster Munitions Convention, banning the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of these weapons. But the U.S. can still act to uphold and reinforce the international norm against these weapons even though the U.S. is not yet a party to the Convention, as the U.S. did when it stopped shipping them to Saudi Arabia. The "Textron" of Russia is the Russian bomb maker Bazalt. [6] Current U.S. policy allows U.S. arms manufacturers to operate side-by-side with Bazalt at international "trade fairs" for arms exporters, such as Jordan's SOFEX arms expo in May. [7] Any U.S. move to sanction Bazalt is likely to resonate internationally: the 119 countries which are parties to the Cluster Munitions Convention are bound not only not to use cluster bombs themselves but to pursue a policy of non-cooperation with their use by others. [8] Urge President Obama to name, shame, and sanction actors who specifically contribute to the use of Russian cluster bombs in Syria by signing our petition.
