ExxonMobil committed what may be the largest corporate crime in history: covering up research showing that Big Oil is responsible for climate change. Now Donald Trump has nominated Exxon's CEO Rex Tillerson to be Secretary of State. Putting Big Oil in charge of our foreign policy could do enormous damage to people and the planet, and Senators should reject his nomination.

House Republicans just came dangerously close to dismantling the independent Office of Congressional Ethics, but public outrage forced them to reverse their course. Thousands of Americans spoke out against the GOP-led effort, and now we have a powerful opportunity to avoid this same debacle every two years. According to The New York Times, "House Republicans, overriding their top leaders, voted on Monday to significantly curtail the power of an independent ethics office set up in 2008 in the aftermath of corruption scandals that sent three members of Congress to jail." Yet, almost as quickly as the Republican plan was unveiled, it was swiftly mired in controversy and derailed. Public outrage and disagreement from within the GOP led the House to reverse course almost immediately. The latest attempt to dismantle the Office of Congressional Ethics was nothing more than a coup by the foxes who want to guard the hen house once again. Before the creation of the independent Office of Congressional Ethics, the House Ethics Committee turned a blind eye to too many abuses of its own ethics rules. The committee should not be given the chance to resume its longtime practice of sweeping rules violations under the rug. When left to police its own, the committee has proven itself not up to the job, which has invariably led to scandals and even jail time for House members. It is significant that today is the eleven-year anniversary of the date when corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff pled guilty to three felonies. The scandal and the jail sentences meted out to Abramoff, Representative Bob Ney, and numerous congressional staffers, led directly to the creation of the Office of Congressional Ethics. The Jack Abramoff scandal is a perfect example of why independent oversight of ethics in Congress must be preserved and strengthened--not gutted.

House Republicans voted on Monday to limit the power of the Office of Congressional Ethics. The measure will be voted on in the House today.

My son was struck and killed by a driver. Even though the driver was apparently not under the influence of alcohol, does not mean he was not under the influence of a possible other substance. In Florida it is not mandatory to do blood testing on fatal vehicle accidents. This is a petition to make it such. Just because someone is not on alcohol does not mean he isn't impaired by a possible slew of other mind impairing substances.

The decision of the DNCC to use super delegates is insulting to the voters and to the spirit of democracy

Small acts of resistance can make a difference. I have decided to be pro-active and risk-free in my objection to this inexperienced, inadequate man who has entered the political sphere. I am a truly non-violent person so this fits my goal of protesting without a ruckus. I will pledge to not watch the inauguration in person or on TV. Trump's technique of creating chaos is his long time M.O. He makes irrational statements and then reverses himself to keep the listening audience in a state of unbalance. He is secretive at a time that people want transparency in government. He loves the game of creating chaos, which is a ludicrous way to help the public stay calm in this turbulent world. It's obvious how I feel about this unwelcome situation. If you feel the same way, please join me in not watching the inauguration. Let us show our strength in numbers by doing something else on January 20th. Perhaps it will have an impact. Even if there is a small dip in viewership, the networks will notice. Let it be known that we are NOT going to watch TV on that day. However, let it also be shared that we will be intensely watching his every step, every motion, every day after for the longest 4 years of our lives. Not only watching but protesting, loudly objecting and changing the calamitous path that Trump is bent on taking. Please take this pledge with me. Do something else on January 20th. Thanks

We need to bring back honesty and integrity to the highest office of the US.

Republican presidential nominee and so-called "president-elect" Donald Trump wants to harm our environment with his own dangerous anti-environment agenda. He wants to tear down forests for housing and construction development just like he wants to ban Muslims from entering the United States. Also, Donald Trump would threaten endangered species by forcing them to go extinct like dinosaurs by having them killed by hunters. We want the National Wildlife Federation to stop Donald Trump and his dangerous anti-environment agenda and save our forests, habitats, swamps and endangered species.

As a progressive Jew, I am horrified that someone with Rabbi Hier's history and reputation would give his imprimatur to the presidency of a man who has sought and encouraged the support of the most dangerous bigots in this country. Rabbi Hier should withdraw his agreement to speak at the inauguration and take no other action to normalize this evil man and his evil administration.

As a citizen, my duty is to uphold our democracy by supporting the United States of America. Being a patriot means respect for our men and women in uniform and trust in our government officials such as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice (DOJ). A lot of Americans and allies all over the world are shocked by the result of the 2016 Presidential Election. While some have compared this event to the aftermath of September 11, 2001 - a terrorist act - I am trapped in a coma unable to tangibly feel the fearful future we face ahead of us. It is in this state of mind that I would like to take this moment to thank President Obama for bringing our enemies to their knees and igniting a sense of justice in our hearts. These terrible times will come to pass; yet sanctions are appropriate to ensure our children enjoy the freedom that comes with being a democratic nation. Together, we stand united as one country regardless of our divisions, race, and color, country of origin, disabilities, age and sexual orientation.
