Mulvaney's "accidental" failure to recognize that a woman who spent 4 years raising his children was an employee reflects a racist, misogynist history that goes back to the 1930s, when southern congressmen wouldn't support labor protections unless farm workers and domestic workers (like nannies) were left out. Even as our thoughts and prayers are going out to the Ft. Lauderdale shooting victims and their families, the Florida State Legislature is AT THIS VERY MOMENT considering a "guns everywhere" bill that would open up a long list of public places to firearms. Those places include Florida’s college and university campuses, county and municipal buildings, legislative committee meetings, K-12 schools and...airports. Yes, airports. The bill would furthermore seek to allow concealed weapons holders to open carry in Florida. 1.7 million Floridians are conceal carry permit holders, the greatest concentration of permit holders in the country. Firearm homicides claim 4.5 Floridians per 100,000, which is higher than the national average of 3.5 Americans per 100,000. With studies showing that states with weak gun laws have the most gun violence, Florida should not be weakening its laws further by forcing more public spaces to allow guns and by permitting concealed weapons holders to open carry. The tourism sector is a powerful voice in Florida and can influence state policy on gun safety. The Florida Commission on Tourism and other leaders in the tourism industry will not like to hear that weaker gun laws that lead to more guns in public places may lead people to start looking elsewhere for that perfect family vacation. Tell the Florida Commission on Tourism now that seeing guns everywhere would not help families feel safe and welcome in the Sunshine State.

There were many signs that President-elect Donald Trump would be a disaster for working families, but his choice for secretary of labor—fast food CEO Andrew Puzder—is truly horrifying. Puzder's anti-worker views are no secret. He opposes raising the minimum wage and doesn’t believe millions of working people should be paid for the overtime they've worked. He supports the practice of letting corporations hire temporary or contract workers to avoid bargaining with employees. Outside of his opposition to policies that would help millions of working people, Puzder has done everything he can to cut corners and shortchange the tens of thousands of hardworking people at Carl's Jr., Hardee's and the restaurants his company owns. He's called workers at Carl’s Jr. and Hardee's—workers who have made him rich—"unskilled" and said they "don’t produce enough economic value." More than half of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurants that were investigated for wage and hour violations were found to have violated the law. He refused to pay his managers overtime they earned, saying paying them more would take away their "sense of ownership." He's talked about replacing workers with machines. Puzder's track record raises serious concerns about his qualifications. Sign the petition to tell members of the U.S. Senate to oppose his nomination for labor secretary.
