On Friday, January 2nd, Israeli far-right settlers from the illegal Adei Ad outpost in the West Bank stoned two cars belonging to the staff of the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem. [1] The U.S. consulate has video documenting the settlers’ attack. [2] U.S. diplomats from the consulate were asked to examine olive saplings belonging to Palestinian farmers—some of whom are U.S. citizens—from the village of Turmus Aya, north-east of Ramallah, that had been uprooted overnight Thursday by settlers, Security officials from the consulate arrived in the area ahead of the diplomats but were forced to leave by the attacking settlers. As a result of the settlers’ violent attack, the consular officials cancelled their visit. Thus – so far – the far-right settlers have been able to evade responsibility for their previous violent and illegal actions by using even more violence. Urge President Obama and your representatives in Congress to fully investigate this incident by signing our petition. For the last century, New Jersey law has required sales of public water systems to go before the voters. The idea is that politicians shouldn’t just be able to sell off what generations of New Jerseyans built together, and that the public should have the right to review any sale of a resources as fundamental as water. But the New Jersey Legislature just passed a bill that cuts voters out of the picture. Instead of making the case for these sales to the voters, multinational water companies want to work exclusively with the elected officials whose campaigns they help bankroll. Selling off water systems might provide a one-time infusion of cash to towns and cities, but it's the ratepayers who end up paying the cost. Water companies can make sky-high bids with the full knowledge that they can raise rates to cover the cost of the purchase. This is a blatant attack on democracy and local control, and a veto is our last chance to stop it.

I’m starting this petition because after being sexually assaulted in Asheville, NC I became aware of the state’s negligence on the subject. Most women in Asheville, NC acknowledge that local rapes occur every weekend, and of the many female residents that I’ve met, every one of them has either experienced sexual assault, or can name a loved one who has. Due to current NC law, women in situations like mine are usually unable to prosecute their assailants. I am currently prosecuting for Sexual Battery, which is a misdemeanor, because I’m unable to prosecute for Rape or Sexual Assault, which are felonies. Below are statistics about sexual assault in NC, I will soon add a list of current laws. Statistics: According to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, in North Carolina 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. Over 20,000 North Carolinians were affected by sexual violence last year. (Oct 2006 NC Council for Women) In 2003-2004 the local county programs served 7,265 clients. The 2004-2005 total number of clients served represents a 16% increase in the total clients served. Women compromised 87% of the total number of clients served while men accounted for 13%. A majority of clients were assaulted by either an acquaintance or relative while 15% of the clients served did not give this information to the local county program. In 2004-2005, 31% of the offenders were a relative of the victim while 35% were an acquaintance. False accusations of sexual assault are estimated to occur at the low rate of 2 percent—similar to the rate of false accusations for other violent crimes. (First Response to Victims of Crime: A Handbook for Law Enforcement Officers on How to Approach and Help. ((2000) Office for Victims of Crime p.8-9) Rape, childhood sexual abuse, and domestic violence are among the most common causes of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in women. The chances that a woman will develop PTSD after being raped are between 50% and 95%. Sexual assault is also closely associated with depression and anxiety disorder. (Population Information Program. (2000) Population Reports: Ending Violence Against Women. Center for Communication Programs, The John Hopkins School of Public Health and Center for Health and Gender Equality) In 2004-2005 Madison county had 34 sexual assaults. (Above Information provided by the North Carolina Council for Women/Domestic Violence Commission-2006) 75% of date and acquaintance rapes involve alcohol or drug use by the assailant.

The State of NC and 45 other states do not require registered nurses (RN's) to be employed and physically present everyday in Assisted Living/Memory Care facilities. State law governs these facilities and is seriously lacking. The residents in the memory care units have dementia/alzheimers which is an "illness" of the brain, but their illness is not afforded the necessary higher level of care provided by RN's that skilled nursing facilities are given. In many assisted living/memory care facilities, the highest level of medical training is a "med-tech," which requires only five months of training with a high school education. These "med-techs" dispense medications including NARCOTICS. The daily running of the memory care unit is often overseen by a med-tech without oversight of an RN or a doctor. The residents are primarily elderly with numerous health problems including heart and kidney illness, hypertension, diabetes, etc. in addition to memory impairment. They often cannot tell you what is wrong. They need and deserve the highly trained eye of an RN. I witnessed daily calls for paramedics to take residents who had fallen to the ER: diagnosis - dehydration. That's often preventable with the oversight of an RN. And the cost to Medicare - staggering. Charges for ambulance trips to and from ER and facility, use of ER, expensive diagnostic tests, physician diagnosis, sometimes sutures or surgery to repair broken bones, and rehabilitation, in addition to pain and suffering, confusion and fear of these helpless people. Skilled nursing facilities, on the other hand, are governed by the state and the federal government which mandates registered nurses in every skilled nursing facility on a daily basis. The residents in skilled nursing have illnesses too but their illnesses are given a higher priority than our loved ones with numerous illnesses and memory impairment. This is an injustice to these innocent human beings who have no voice. Please sign our petition.

Rabbi Kane has given 22 years of devoted and effective service as the leader of CSI, and the thought that any of the very real long-term financial and membership issues facing the congregation (and which, as you know, face the Conservative movement generally) would be ameliorated by firing our Rabbi is ludicrous. He has enriched our lives in many different ways- through his teaching, his spiritual guidance, his encouragement of meaningful engagement with Jewish life, the outstanding educational programming he has brought to the shul, his leadership in Westchester on behalf of Israel advocacy, and the innumerable large and small acts of kindness he has performed on behalf of so many members of the community and our families. We strongly believe that separating Rabbi Kane from CSI would be devastating to the community, and it would also irrevocably change our relationship with CSI as well.

My son was in a bar fight, another person got hurt and my is now incarcerated for making a bad decision. He is being unjustly mistreated by prison staff, had his belongings stolen, purchased new things only to have those stolen as well, is afraid of the other prisoners (they call him names and have even threatened him for not standing up to the first inmate that stole from him). However, I know that I am not the only one concerned about this and that is afraid for their loved one's safety. Many other family members and friends are afraid to complain because they worry that those complaints will result in the inmates being punished. This also involves companies making huge profits from the inmates, their families, and taxpayers: the healthcare facilities that are supposed to be there to help sick inmates (my son gets medication for seizures) and have let inmates die, the phone service company that profits by allowing inmates to call us, the company that allows us to send money to an inmate's account and then provides very overpriced merchandise for the inmates to purchase at the prison canteen, while making huge profits from this, the company that allows us to buy the inmates some additional clothing so they can dress for the seasonal weather conditions. This inhumane treatment needs to stop.
