• Tell Anti-Choice Republicans: Get Your Priorities Straight!
Anti-choice politicians are hell-bent on making it impossible for women to get an abortion. • The U.S. House voted to eliminate insurance coverage for abortion for millions of women, and tax small businesses that offer abortion coverage in their health plan. • The Senate plans to vote to ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, targeting women in desperate situations. Banning abortion and raising taxes on small business share one thing in common: they are about as far as Republican leaders can get from the priorities of the American people. We’re flooding Congress with messages to remind them what the majority of Americans really care about.

  • GH Tribune Newspaper: Moderate comments that BULLY
A completely botched, nonfactual/un-researched and obviously rushed story written by Becky Vargo, published 1-20-15 titled "Dead Dog Debacle" is what bought me to your GHT's (newspaper) online "Advantage" and comments that follow each article published. Many regulars comment daily. They call themselves names like LessThanAmused", DKS523, misanthrope, and Straighjacket - which allows them to behind made-up names as they post comments that are simply beyond cruel and evil - which is awful in its own right. I believe in freedom of speech and opinion(s)..the problem is that many comments made by these ppl - these regulars - downright "bullies" ppl named within the piece (i.e. within the contents of the articles). The comments BULLY regarding looks, sex, race, monetary worth, intelligence and more. This is unacceptable - and these comments needs to be moderated - with those "bullying" comments removed immediately and the person writing them warned and then finally removed if they continue. Bullying is one of the most important issues on the forefront today. Parents and teachers continue trying desperately to teach our youth how wrong bullying is... and what can be the awful outcome from it. Bullying has been discussed in the most high office(s), to the family home, to the church - how wrong it is, yet the GH Tribune allows it and even seems to "grandstand" it - even allowing bullies to make REPEATED BULLYING (INCLUDING THREATS ) within their comments against others - within the online content of The Grand Haven Tribune. Please urge the Grand Haven Tribune to moderate these bullies once and for all AND FORCE THE USE OF REAL NAMES & ADDRESSES of those commenting, or withhold their privileges of commenting!

  • Ban Extreme Oil & Gas Extraction Methods in Brea, California
Fracking and extreme oil extraction techniques like acidizing are taking place in and around Brea. These wells pose a direct threat to the safety and well-being of Brea residents. There are currently at least 24 cases of fracking and acidizing within Brea’s sphere of influence. The City of Brea owns fracking wells that are located just outside the Olinda Elementary School and near the new Sports Complex. There are more fracking wells in the Blackstone and Olinda Ranch Neighborhoods within a few feet of people’s homes. Fracking is the process of injecting millions of gallons of water, sand, and tens of thousands of gallons of known toxic chemicals deep underground at extremely high pressures to blast open rock formation. This allows hard to reach oil and gas to flow more freely. Acidization is the process of using hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid to stimulate wells as they melt rock layers that allow oil and gas to flow more freely. Hydrochloric and hydrochloric acid are air toxins that can cause illness and even fatalities if exposure is high enough. Less is known about acidization because it is a newer technique and mainly employed in California, but fracking has a horrendous track record. Fracking has been linked to over 1,000 cases of water contamination including groundwater contamination in 4 states, increases in air pollution and smog, and finally fracking practices and waste disposal wells have been linked to earthquakes as large as a 5.7 in Oklahoma. Fracking is also exempt from the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Safe Drinking Water Act making it impossible to hold the Oil & Gas Industry accountable to public health and the environment. With the passing of SB4, the statewide fracking regulations bill, we still don’t have enough protections to ensure that the public health and environment will be safe from fracking. SB4 only requires the notification of fracking and disclosure of chemicals. It does nothing to protect ensure that fracking is safe for communities of the environment. This is why we need to take local action to ensure the safety and well-being of Brea residents. This petition calls on the City of Brea to shut down their dangerous wells near schools and homes and to enact a permanent ban on all extreme and unconventional extraction methods as well as waste water injections wells within Brea City Limits.

  • Wolves Under Attack in Congress
Right now, members of Congress are working on legislation to remove existing Endangered Species Act protections for wolves across some—and possibly almost all—of the lower 48 states. These anti-wolf legislators could succeed, unless we fight back now. Wolves have just begun to recover in some areas of the United States after being nearly wiped out by centuries of ruthless hunting, trapping, and poisoning. Despite fragile successes that have brought wolves back to the northern Rockies and the Midwest, they are still missing from a vast majority of their former range and are subject to mounting persecution even where they have been restored. Urge your senators and congressional representative to stand up for wolves! Federal protections for wolves in the lower 48 states are critical to securing the recovery of existing populations and allowing wolves to expand into other suitable habitat in places like Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, the southern Rocky Mountains, and the Northeast. Now the House and Senate are poised to take up legislation to strip wolves of their federal protections in states including Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. If anti-wolf legislators get their way, the result will be more state-led killing of wolves and a blow to the Endangered Species Act, our nation’s safety net for imperiled species. Urge your senators and representatives to oppose any anti-wolf legislation put forth in this Congress.

  • Law Enforcement Only Registry in Vermont
Vermont has had critical errors on the audits that have been performed since Act 58 passed in 2009, costing the State of Vermont money; with the financial constraints that the State finds itself in, now is the time to save money. With the registry bloated by the low, medium, and moderate risk offenders, the Department of Public Safety has less time to monitor and track the offenders who are high risk and judged to pose a greater risk to the community.

  • Support teachers' right to organize a union without fear at ASPIRA Charters
ASPIRA was originally founded in 1961 by social justice advocate and union activist, Antonia Pantoja, to address the high drop-out rate and low academic achievement of Puerto Rican youth. Their staff is dedicated to upholding that mission and seeks the board’s recognition of their hard work. In the spring of 2013 a committee of concerned educators at ASPIRA launched their campaign to form a union. The board of ASPIRA and its administration immediately launched an anti-union campaign in response. They threatened to terminate several key members of the union committee. The community rallied around the educators and charges were filed against ASPIRA at the National Labor Relations Board. Thankfully no members of the union committee were terminated. The NLRB charges were settled, and ASPIRA considerably toned down their anti-union rhetoric. Over a hundred staff members at ASPIRA schools have courageously and publicly declared their support for a union. However there are still members of the staff who are hesitant to openly support the union effort because of the chilling effect of ASPIRA’s initial anti-union campaign. That is why we are now asking for the board to publicly declare that they will not interfere with the staff’s right to organize, and agree to provide a peaceful and unobstructed pathway to union recognition. Please sign this petition demanding the ASPIRA board respect the rights of their staff by pledging to remain neutral during the unionization effort at ASPIRA.

  • Stop the Abortion Ban
It is outrageous that on the same day Congressional Republicans abandoned their radical abortion ban proposal for being too extreme, Virginia Republicans are pursuing an even more dangerous version. Virginians need leaders who focus on policies to support families' economic security, not interfere in private decisions that should be between a woman, her family, her faith, and her doctor. Virginia voters have repeatedly rejected these sort of extreme attacks on women's health. This abortion ban was too radical for Washington and Virginia women can't stand for it here.

  • Expand Medicaid in This Session
Even House Republicans now see the need for legislation to accept our tax money and provide health coverage for all Kansans. This will also create jobs. They can do it this session. We must INSIST that they do! Rep. Tom Sloan, R-Lawrence said, “I just think that we’re well past the time that we should be looking at how we develop a Kansas solution.” Rep. Jim Ward, D-Wichita (HB 2045) has been working tirelessly for this since last year. Now is the time! They have the power, now they just need the will. We can make sure they Expand Medicaid!

  • Save Small Internet Service Providers
On February 26 FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is calling a vote that will implement regulations that will reclassify all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as public utilities. This may seem reasonable. However, it will essentially shut down most small ISPs serving rural areas. We don't have the resources to comply with the Title II reporting requirements. If that doesn't bother you, this might: The Universal Service Fund (renamed the Connect America Fund) is a tax that will apply to every Internet access customer in the land. It is currently 16.8% If the regulation is allowed to go into effect, your $40 Internet bill will go to $46.72. This money will be taken from all Internet users and selectively given (free of charge) to selected ISPs who will use it to build our their networks and replace your small, local ISP that they will have essentially driven out of business. Once Comcast, Verizon, AT&T and a few other big players have taken over, they will be free to increase Internet access charges-- they will have no competition. When you use up your monthly allotment of 10 Gigabytes of data (About 2 Netflix movies), and they start charging you for going over your data allotment, your bill won't be $200 for this "abuse" it will have the CAF tax applied so that you will be paying $233.60! The Internet has grown to its current usefulness through an approach of little government regulation as a Title I Information service. Please sign this petition and prevent this outrageous power grab.
