Petition to UC: Respect Richmond! The new campus will be three quarters the size of the current UC Berkeley campus once complete, and could transform one of the most disadvantaged communities in all of California. Richmond, a community made up of 83% people of color and where 1 in 3 children live in poverty, has a long history of environmental degradation, poor public health outcomes, lack of affordable housing, poorly performing public schools and a severe shortage of good middle class jobs. The University of California has an opportunity, and the ability, to help lift out of poverty a community where real economic opportunity has remained out of reach for the majority of its residents. Therefore we call on the University of California to sign a legally binding community benefits agreement that includes: Housing: Invest in an Anti-Displacement Fund to subsidize the development of affordable housing units and protect low income tenants. Training: Invest in training programs to ensure that local and disadvantaged workers develop skills for professions on the Richmond Bay Campus. Living Wage: Institute a living wage policy to lift all workers out of poverty at the Berkeley Global Campus. Construction Jobs: Sign a Project Labor Agreement with the Contra Costa Building Trades Council that ensures union representation and includes local hire language. Permanent Employment: Ensure jobs similarly performed at UC's Berkeley campus covered by collective bargaining agreements remain UC jobs at the new campus. Small Business: Invest in and enhance opportunities for small businesses. Education: Invest in a Youth Opportunity and Education Fund for Pre K-12 and community college students to help build career pathways.506 of 600 SignaturesCreated by David Sharples

Stop the RIFThe RIF plan is going to ruin Brookdale. Tuition needs to increase (as it should) in order to keep Brookdale as the great college that it is. This tuition increase could save the college. If tuition does not increase by $15 a credit, and nothing is done to stop the RIF, Brookdale will fall apart, and it is unfair to the students.291 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Paul

Warren Buffett: Stop Financing Deals that Hurt AmericaBurger King and its top shareholders will dodge up to $1.2 billion in U.S. taxes over four years as a result of this accounting sleight of hand. President Obama has condemned tax inversion deals, calling them “unpatriotic” because big corporations stick Americans with the tab for not paying their fair share of taxes. Inversions are legal, but unquestionably unfair. While this scheme hurts American taxpayers, it is hugely profitable for the people making it possible. Buffet is financing the inversion through his firm, Berkshire Hathaway, for a whopping 9% return on his investment. Mister Buffett, please support a fair tax system, where corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, and avoid deals that make the rest of us pick up their tab.90 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Americans for Tax Fairness

Marijuana in CherokeeDue to the recent changes in federal law. The western North Carolina band of Cherokee Native Americans and EBCI council can now grow and sale medical Marijuana to thier tribe and to those who are in need of pain relief within it without risk of addiction or worse. As I myself lost my only sister to a legally sold and taxed synthetic marijuana, trying to pass a probation screening. If you wish to do more or reach the tribal members you may do so here.. http://theonefeather.com/cherokee-elected-officials Thanks Casey Lee413 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Casey Stuart

Tell Congress: Ban Torture. Period. We live in a dangerous world. But when CIA operatives and contractors torture terrorist suspects, it doesn't make us safer -- and it doesn't work. The recent CIA torture report made that abundantly clear. Right now, the federal law that bans torture only applies to the U.S. military -- not our intelligence agencies. President Obama's executive order barring all agencies from using torture could be reversed, even in secret, by a future president. That's why it's critical that Congress act swiftly to pass a law barring all agencies of the U.S. government, and contractors acting on our behalf, from engaging in torture. Without legislation, the door on torture is still open. It's time for Congress to slam that door shut once and for all.23,609 of 25,000 SignaturesCreated by Ron Wyden

Restore GEA to Cambridge CSD in 2015-2016As a school community, Cambridge CSD has already made significant reductions to critical components of our annual school budget as rising costs outpaced revenue. Staff positions, class sections, and services have been reduced for students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. We are working together as a district to make difficult decisions and reduce spending. Now we need your continued support to ensure the adopted state budget upholds the funding promises made to school districts across the state, by eliminating the GEA. This year alone (in the 2014-15 state aid calculations), Cambridge lost $891,670 in funding that was promised to our district, but taken back to balance the state budget. Every year since 2009, Cambridge has lost an average of over one million dollars to the GEA, and this disturbing trend must be addressed. We ask you to take immediate action to prevent long-term negative effects on the quality of public education for Cambridge students. Abolish the Gap Elimination Adjustment in this year’s state budget.144 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Kate Mattison

Elected Officials - People with Dementia are not DeadMy mother has dementia, and the current laws are not protecting her civil right to Due Process. Judge Daneeka Cotton in the State of Maryland appointed a Guardian of Property and a Guardian of Person without allowing her the opportunity to testify on her own behalf. The Guardian of Property is now trying to sell all of her personal property, and the Guardian of Person, Prince Georges County Department of Aging, has confined her to a nursing home like a prisoner. My mother is not even afforded the opportunity to receive her mail.93 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Sherry Feggins

We can't stop until there is a bully protocol in EVERY school.I have not been personally affected by bullying; however, I do work with children who have been bullied at school or in their community. The effects of bullying on these young lives is horrible. These children fear going to school, which should be a safe place to learn and grow. These children live in fear of their bullies and learn to self hate. Bullying is an issue that needs to be stopped; we need to build up our youth NOT let them tear each other apart. Maybe if our youth learned how to be more respectful, kind and accepting of others' differences from the start, in their adulthood there could be less hate.38 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Shannon Meaney

FREE JACK GRANGERMy petition is about my fiance, our kids have suffered enough, PLEASE review his case, it was political,😘 The facts of this case are that we both had worked at the Sheriffs Department for many of years and they tried to control our lives and we both decided to move on when we did that Jack started working for the county and two weeks prior to all of this Jack was pulled over by a major and asked what he was doing with a sign for sheriff in his front yard (which was the opposing sheriff, and not the one that had been sheriff for the past 20 plus years) the major said who do you think you are after all the paychecks (current sheriff) has signed for you jack told him well he isn't signing them anymore and was probably kind of a smartass and said that it was none of his business who we voted for the major got t'd off and told him you just wait I'll get you you son of a bleep... Two weeks later the SWAT team came in and arrested us for possession possession with intent to sell trafficking and child endangerment (the trafficking and child endangerment were later dropped) there was absolutely no evidence that they found on our property or self. Eventually after retaining a lawyer and filing for a motion of discovery there was a tape from our current roommate that we were trying to help out who was apparently an undercover and on the tape it was my roommate asking me if I had any medicine for his girlfriend because she had just cut her hand up and glass and had no insurance I of course gave him some pills and told him I did not need any money but he convinced me to let him give me some money after all that we had done for him and giving him a place to stay I eventually agreed and took the money.. This is the only evidence that they had whatsoever Jack was not even at our property when this took place.. Jack's lawyer convinced him to go in front of the judge and that him and his counselor had everything taken care of and he was going to get 6 months in a rehabilitation facility. It was all a lie it was all a setup when he went in front of the judge the judge gave him 10 years he has currently completed six and a half years.. He is 100 percent innocent!!!! I must add that I have spent all of our savings on lawyer and appeals, when finally the last lawyer told me he would not take any more money from me because it was a complete set up and I was never going to get him out.. #TRUESTORY😓😢😪😥 PLEASE GOD HELP MY FAMILY!!!88 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Heather Lynn Obenland

Accountability for those who authorized tortureCitizens of the United States do not wish our agents to use torture under any circumstances. It is not only wrong, it will result in harm to our troops and other citizens. Nothing Dick Cheney or the head of the CIA can say will change the fact that the end does not justify the means. The US is in violation of the Geneva Convention and our own laws. The Nation says: "Human experimentation was a core feature of the CIA’s torture program. The experimental nature of the interrogation and detention techniques is clearly evident in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s executive summary of its investigative report, despite redactions (insisted upon by the CIA) to obfuscate the locations of these laboratories of cruel science and the identities of perpetrators. At the helm of this human experimentation project were two psychologists hired by the CIA, James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen. They designed interrogation and detention protocols that they and others applied to people imprisoned in the agency’s secret “black sites.” In its response to the Senate report, the CIA justified its decision to hire the duo: “We believe their expertise was so unique that we would have been derelict had we not sought them out when it became clear that CIA would be heading into the uncharted territory of the program.” Mitchell and Jessen’s qualifications did not include interrogation experience, specialized knowledge about Al Qaeda or relevant cultural or linguistic knowledge. What they had was Air Force experience in studying the effects of torture on American prisoners of war, as well as a curiosity about whether theories of “learned helplessness” derived from experiments on dogs might work on human enemies. To implement those theories, Mitchell and Jessen oversaw or personally engaged in techniques intended to produce “debility, disorientation and dread.” Their “theory” had a particular means-ends relationship that is not well understood, as Mitchell testily explained in an interview on Vice News: “The point of the bad cop is to get the bad guy to talk to the good cop.” In other words, “enhanced interrogation techniques” (the Bush administration’s euphemism for torture) do not themselves produce useful information; rather, they produce the condition of total submission that will facilitate extraction of actionable intelligence."34 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Joette Storm

Don't let PNM fine solar users out of business to subsidize dirty coalNew Mexico’s monopoly public power company wants to buy a coal mine – and they just announced a new plan that includes fining residential solar producers to pay for it. PNM should support clean energy, not more dirty coal. New Mexico's elected Public Regulation Commission members must not vote to approve PNM's new rate and fine plan. Tell them you want them to vote NO.7,091 of 8,000 SignaturesCreated by ProgressNow NM
