DEAR NEIGHBORS: WE NEED YOUR HELP TO STOP COYOTE KILLING CONTESTS IN GRAYSON COUNTY, VA Let's help Grayson County find a more ecologically responsible, effective way to deal with coyotes in the area, by promoting coexistence through education. Coexistence management plans work, as attested to by cities such as San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Vancouver, Denver and many others throughout the country. We ask officials in leadership positions to become proactive in stopping the trapping and in reaching out to the public with educational materials to promote a plan for coexistence. *Killing coyotes, especially so cruelly through killing contests, does not work because vacated niches are soon filled by newcomer coyotes, and when coyotes are killed, they reproduce more to make up the difference. Published research shows that indiscriminate killing of coyotes throws off their natural social structure which keeps their own numbers in check. *Killing coyotes, either through massive shooting or by trapping them is terrifyingly cruel to the animals and causes a huge amount of suffering and pain to individual coyotes and entire family structures. *Simple guidelines and education work in other cities, they can work here. These include never feeding a coyote, not leaving food out, securing garbage cans, protecting small pets by keeping them indoors when they cannot be supervised out of doors, keeping dogs leashed in coyote areas, learning how to appropriately shoo a coyote away if it gets too close. *Coyotes play a vital and natural role in the ecosystem, eating mostly rodents that can carry plague and hantavirus. Learn about their amazing close knit families, intelligence and survival skills even as humans have tried to wipe them out. We, the undersigned, want coyote killing contests in Grayson County stopped, and we want our leadership officials to become proactive in support of coexistence. We support a coexistence plan which involves management through community education programs, presentations and workshops, information websites and other communication forms such as flyers on doorknobs and information in water bills. The 2000 E Biddle Street vacant properties have been a hub for drug use, homelessness, and temporary dump site of materials. As our Mayor has requested, these sites are to be revitalized to support more green communities, with beauty and safety as the top priority. OUR SCHOOLS ARE ALREADY OVERCROWDED; MORE HIGH-DENSITY DEVELOPMENT WILL MAKE SCHOOL OVERCROWDING WORSE. Development at the proposed densities for Sub-units S1 and M2 would result in 72-96 additional houses or town homes to be served by Willow Springs ES and Eagle View ES. Willow Springs was built for 750 students, currently has 1000 students and is projected to increase by 15% by 2018-2019 without any new development. Eagle View is projected to be at 118% capacity by 2018-2019. Both schools feed into Fairfax HS, which is projected to be at 107% capacity by 2018-2019. The staff report calls for passing the buck to Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS): “To mitigate impacts of the proposed development … FCPS would look to the developer and support from the county at the time of rezoning.” Until citizens recently brought it to their attention, the School Board was unaware of the proposed change to the Comprehensive Plan, and has no plans to build new schools in this area. FIXED RESOURCES AT SCHOOLS MAKE MORE EXPANSION THROUGH TRAILERS IMPOSSIBLE. Both Willow Springs and Eagle View already have a semi-permanent network of trailers. Additional trailers are not an option because of fixed resources which cannot be expanded, such as gymnasiums, cafeterias, land, and parking. LEE HIGHWAY IS ALREADY GRIDLOCKED; MORE HIGH-DENSITY DEVELOPMENT WILL MAKE BAD TRAFFIC EVEN WORSE. This section of Lee Highway is already at a standstill during rush hour, and this impacts our quality of life negatively -- it makes it hard to get to our jobs, get home to our families, and drive our kids to school and extracurricular activities. Our school buses regularly have difficulty arriving on time due to traffic. For these reasons, we urge you to maintain the densities of the current Comprehensive Plan at this time. I want to transfer schools but I can't due to overpopulation at vandeventer middle school. I'm having a hard time at my new school and I really want to go back since it's my last year of middle school.

The Raleigh News & Observer reported on Oct. 10, “In the 4-3 decision, the [Utilities] Commission said that even though NC’s corporate income tax was cut by the state legislature from 6.9 percent to 5 percent, utilities can continue charging customers at 6.9 percent and pocket the difference.” The newspaper said all the Commission members appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory voted in favor of this giveaway of our money. McCrory is a former Duke Energy executive; he benefited from over $1 million of the company’s campaign spending, and his environmental agency tried to block efforts to force Duke to clean up its coal ash pollution. The Utilities Commission’s decision is an example of favoritism to big political donors, rather than sound economics or fairness. The strong protest against Duke’s coal ash pollution of the Dan River forced some modest improvements. Now we need to push the agency responsible for protecting the public interest to oppose a bad decision that will cost us over $20 million a year. Mr. Chris Ayers of the Public Staff said they are “considering our options” to challenge the decision. Please sign the petition to urge the Public Staff to take strong action for the public.

My son, Frank McQueen, was shot multiple times and killed by Chester, Pennsylvania Police. He was shot so bad the funeral director wanted to do a close casket. I was also told that my son was also shot in his head twice at close range. The system is not telling me anything about my son's killing. My son is dead help me fight for yours. Our American History class feels that having Election day on Tuesday prevents many eligible voters from voting. By allowing the process to change to Sunday or even Saturday, more citizens will be able to vote thus creating a more democratic process.

On July 2, 2014, in New York City (NYC), a Federal Court jury found that NYC police acted with "malice or evil intent" in falsely arresting four individuals at the 2004 Republican National Convention (RNC) in NYC, and awarded punitive damages to the protesters. This trial -- possibly the first time a "false arrest for protesting" case has gone to trial in decades -- comes six months after an $18 million settlement for the arrests of some 1,800 individuals at the 2004 RNC. I am one of the four (out of over 1,800) who refused all settlement offers in order to have a trial by jury. It is long overdue for NYC to accept responsibility for the wrongs committed and not continue to drag this process out.
