We feel our friend and family member, Shana, R.N., from Ohio, is being targeted for filing a lawsuit against Cleveland State University in 2013. We have information that leads us to believe that a state employee or employees (protected by the State) are behind a complaint made to the State of Ohio Board of Nursing (members assigned by the State Governor); which could have severe consequences on Shana's nursing career and license, earned at another University. We feel this recent action has only occurred because of the filing of the 2013 lawsuit. Our tax dollars, paid to support State Agencies (ex. Ohio Board of Nursing), should not be used to settle what appears to be a personal vendetta between State employees and a former CSU student. Right now Oregon is 47th in the country for what we invest in higher education. There are only three states doing less to support students in America than we are! We have the opportunity to do something really big to support higher education by voting YES on Measure 86, which would allow the state of Oregon to create a fund called the Student Opportunity Fund -- a constitutionally-protected source of student aid for higher education and job training. I believe our students -- who make up the future workforce -- are every bit as important to our state’s economic vitality as infrastructure. Measure 86 would allow the legislature to use the same funding mechanism we use to pay for new bridges and highways to pay for our students to get a college education. Oregon’s graduates right now each have an average of $29,000 in debt. That’s not the Oregon I want to leave to our kids. Support our students and vote YES on Measure 86 on Election Day! There are some really good ideas out there to support students trying to get an education. We already have the Oregon Opportunity Grant which provides direct support to students in need. Sussex County, Delaware has been experiencing rapid, uncontrolled land development which is jeopardizing the safety and lifestyle of area residents and negatively impacting the beauty, environment, coastal waterways and endangered species in Sussex County. Numerous proposals are before the Council for a vote and Nov 4 will elect a new Council more responsive to sensible, sustainable land development.

The most basic color glossy mailers cost 50 cents each to mail. For Oakland with 60,000 highly likely voter unique households, that's a minimum of $30,000 to communicate with voters. You need three or more because most mailing pieces get thrown out. $90K is a lot of favors you'll owe to well to do supporters or you have to be rich to run.

The threat of employment discrimination is too prevalent for job seekers who are forced to have their credit history pulled in order to get hired. But right now, the New York City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio are negotiating a bill—the Stop Credit Discrimination in Employment Act—that could protect millions of people from being burned by this practice. After months of grassroots outcry, New York City lawmakers are on the verge of finalizing what could become the strongest bill in the country that bans employment credit checks. Too many qualified job applicants suffer when their credit is used as a hiring filter. Privacy is invaded. Jobs are lost. Bills don’t get paid. Savings don’t grow. People of color, who are already susceptible to other forms of employment discrimination, are especially vulnerable to the prejudices that employment credit checks may cause. The truth is, credit reports—a tool originally developed for lenders determining who to lend to and on what terms—have no relevance for hiring or employment. No research has ever shown that reviewing job applicants’ credit history successfully produces a reliable workforce. A recent New York Times editorial was unequivocal: “the [New York City] Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio should unite behind this worthwhile bill” to ban the discriminatory practice of employment credit checks. As the Mayor and City Council negotiate the final content of this bill, a strong show of force is vital to ensure that it will protect all New Yorkers. Majority of my peers spend their leisure time in school, participating in athletics, or establishing a social life; they are not plotting, executing, and contemplating the consequences of criminal activity. These are the primary reasons why adolescents should be given alternative trials and consequences; they do not share the same mental capabilities as adults, so they should be regarded as one.

Democracy in America and Maryland is being corrupted by big moneyed interests. Legislative leaders should help create a more level political playing field for all Americans, rich and poor, by allowing a floor vote in the Maryland General Assembly on the Democracy Amendment. This proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution would declare that: • Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights. They do not have First Amendment rights such as free speech. • Money is not speech. The right to spend vast sums of money on elections is not protected as freedom of speech. • Federal, state and local governments have the right to regulate campaign finance, to assure free and fair elections. That should include how money is raised, how money is spent, public disclosure and public financing. • Natural persons who are U.S. citizens have the right to vote and to have their vote counted. The amendment this resolution supports will overturn the deeply flawed Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. FEC, and similar court decisions. Why do we call for a constitutional amendment, given how hard it is to pass an amendment? Because it’s the only way to reverse the Supreme Court when it goes in the wrong direction. For example, after the Supreme Court in the 1857 Dred Scott case declared that slaves are property who cannot become citizens and have virtually no rights, the United States in 1865-66 passed the Thirteenth and Fourteenth amendments. These abolished slavery and gave former slaves full citizenship rights.
