  • Stop censorship of climate science in new school textbooks!
Two major publishers have drafted new social studies textbooks for K-12 students in Texas that are filled with misinformation about climate change. Since Texas is the nation’s second largest buyer of textbooks, books produced for the state are often sold nationwide. The Texas State Board of Education is reviewing these books now, and will decide at its November meeting whether to approve them. Among other egregious errors, the draft textbooks from publishers McGraw Hill and Pearson assert there is an active dispute among scientists about the primary cause of climate change. The climate change-denying Heartland Institute is given equal footing with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which integrates the work of thousands of credentialed, peer-reviewed scientists. The publishers are responding to pressure from climate deniers on the Texas State Board of Education, who are determined to stop students from learning the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change -- that it is happening now and caused by human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels. Unless McGraw-Hill and Pearson correct the many factual errors about climate change before its books are presented to the Board next month, students across the country will be denied accurate information about the biggest global challenge their generation will face. It’s crucial that we send a strong message right away that censoring climate science in order to sell books is unethical and an unacceptable disservice to students, and must be corrected.

  • Stop Fisd2015
My bestfriends (of seven years) will be attending Wakeland HS next year when they live one street away from me. I see no need for Eldarado Estates going to Lonestar HS. This will be the third time I've been affected by FISD re-zoning schools! I will not take this anymore! My neighborhood should be going to Wakeland not Lonestar!

  • Vote YES on 2: Stop Litter in MA
The Bottle Bill places a refundable nickel deposit on beer and soda bottles, and those containers get recycled 80% of the time. Other drinks like bottled water, juice, and sports drinks don't have the deposit and only get recycled 23% of the time. These containers are the ones that end up as litter in our parks, beaches, and ballfields, and we shouldn't tolerate it. Vote YES on 2 to keep Massachusetts beautiful.

  • A Proper Sentence for Oscar Pistorius!
Oscar Pistorius has a history of obsession with guns and domestic violence "incidents" as documented by his former girlfriend Samantha Taylor and police spokeswoman Brigadier Denise Beukes. Today, NPR reported that: "Correctional services officer Joel Maringa says the sentence Oscar Pistorius should receive would be three years of house arrest with strict monitoring — no guns, no drugs, no alcohol — and the attendance of support programs, along with 16 hours of community service a month, likely cleaning a local museum or hospital, to compensate society 'for the wrong he has done.'" This, for the life of an innocent woman?! UNACCEPTABLE! In the United States three women PER DAY are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends. Each MINUTE, 24 people endure domestic violence. In fact, the presence of a firearm in a domestic violence situation increased the risk of homicide by 500 percent! Tell Hon. Thokozile Masipa that she needs to send Pistorius and the rest of the world a message - WE WILL NOT STAND FOR IT ANY LONGER! Honor the legacy of the beautiful Reeva Steenkamp and the other angels whose lives were cut short by domestic violence. Add your name now!

  • Support Berkeley's proposed tax on Big Soda. Yes on D!
The soda industry has spent 1.675 million dollars (over $21/voter) to date in an attempt to kill this community-driven initiative. Berkeley vs. Big Soda is a David vs. Goliath story about a grassroots children's health movement struggling against a massive corporate-backed campaign of disinformation whose only goal is protecting profits. Not only do we want a win at the polls on Nov. 4th, but we want to inspire other communities to take on this giant - show it can be done. Berkeley is an early adopter of social change. It was one of the first cities to voluntarily desegregate its public schools, offer domestic partner benefits, institute curb cuts in sidewalks, and ban styrofoam containers. What happens in Berkeley doesn't stay in Berkeley. Please visit BerkeleyvsBigSoda.com for more information.

  • Demand Birchbox Cease Sales of Animal-tested Products!
Birchbox has cornered the market when it comes to selling samples to women (and men). Their products are colorful, innovative, and helpful -- yet often those included come from companies that continue to test on animals even though reliable, safe methods have been developed so that this process is no longer necessary. We demand that Birchbox take a look at the bigger picture -- one that includes not only beauty, sales, and money but also the faces of the animals who suffer and die every day for the sake of developing that newest mascara or face cream. Alternative methods exist that can eradicate the need for these cruel tests, and Birchbox has the opportunity to show the world it's important to be compassionate as well as fashion-savvy. Please sign this petition to send a message to Birchbox that we will no longer sit back and turn a blind eye to the cruelty occurring in the makeup industry. Then tell them you will unsubscribe until they've reevaluated and retooled the way they do business going forward. Together we can make an amazing change!

  • ISBE: Acquire a Waiver to Delay PARCC Implementation / ISBE: Adquirir una exención para aplazar l...
Ongoing concern over reliability of the PARCC test due to insufficient time for field testing, in addition to inadequate technology to administer the test and lack of Common Core readiness in many schools across the state, support the view that this test is not yet ready for statewide, mandatory administration. Illinois is not alone in its opposition to this test in its current form. In fact, of the 23 states originally planning to use PARCC, only 8 states plus the District of Columbia are using both the elementary and high school versions of the PARCC. (Three additional states will use PARCC for some students.) ISBE needs to provide an appropriate education for all Illinois children; therefore, the PARCC test must be suspended for the 2014-2015 school year.

  • Denver Post is a Republican RAG
Why would a (supposedly unaffiliated news source) endorse a ridiculous religious nut like Cory Gardner? Is it because they checked with their church of choice before stating their position? There is no room for religious intolerance in our country's elections. It's time to rally support behind the women of our country and stop the overbearing control of women supported by the republican right wing nuts!!!!
