The residents-maintained parking lot on Gay Street in Manayunk that has provided much needed parking for the neighborhood for nearly 30 years is at risk of being sold to make way for more un-needed houses. At least 35 more cars will be added to the already overly glutted parking situation in Manayunk.

Last month many of us, especially those of us in the trans* community, spoke up and complained about Facebook suspending and locking out many Drag Queens and Kings from their Facebook accounts. This caused a huge inconvenience as these were the pages that these performers needed and used to promote themselves and their acts. In a like fashion I used my 'middle name" on my Facebook page to promote my not-for- profit which designed to benefit the entire LBGTQ community as well as anyone who is struggling. Last Monday I found my page suspended and I was locked out. Personally this was not a huge deal as I have not had the time or money to work on my non-profit. However as that has been my name for several years now, it did cause many of my friends to wonder if they did have the correct Sheri "AmericanRainbow" Proctor. Now we find out that Facebook is also using this policy to suspend and lockout trans* people in the Middle East, specifically Saudi Arabia, forcing these people to prove that the name they are using is their real name! This is in direct conflict with Facebook's "Authentic Name" stated in their terms of service. Facebook needs to know and understand that outing trans* people all over the world will far too often lead to their murder. Public officials should be mandated to accept a public debate during an election year. Debates allow for many issues to be discussed. It is an opportunity for the public to see, hear and learn about real issues facing their government and communities. To have our Governor reject a public debate is a shameful act of defiance that must be corrected.

The wetlands adjacent to South Pond serve as one of the last remaining habitats of the critically imperiled Dukes’ Skipper butterfly. These wetlands are threatened by a plan that would plop 73 McMansions, built by billionaire developer William Pulte, onto a newly deforested plateau adjacent to the wetlands. The effluent from their massive, chemically treated lawns, would discharge into the wetlands only feet from where the Skipper has been sighted. In order to gain access to the planned development, the developer has applied to the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for a permit to build a road through the wetlands. The City of Ann Arbor’s Natural Areas Preservation (NAP) remains opposed to this road because in part because “The proposed road would be built very close to areas where rare plant and animal species have been documented, including Euphyes dukesi (Duke’s skipper), which is state-threatened and legally protected, and Carex trichocarpa (Hairy-fruited sedge), which is a species of special concern Michigan. It is likely that construction activities so close to the wetland will have negative impacts on these species and their of its impact on these sensitive wetlands.” The developer has applied for the wetlands permit even though a reasonable and prudent alternative, which has no direct impact to the wetlands, exists. This alternative, which provides better access to the development, has been vetted by the City of Ann Arbor Planning Staff and has been recommended for approval. We call on the MDEQ to refuse to grant this permit simply because a reasonable and prudent to this wetlands destruction exists. We also call on the developer to abandon this destructive plan and donate the wetlands and surrounding land to the Ann Arbor Parks Dept. as the developer had originally proposed. Delisting the redbelly has significance far beyond a single species… More important is the precedence of the corrupt process itself. Here we have Department Secretary Robin Jennison agreeing with biologists that the redbelly is seriously threatened but proposing delisting to appease legislators threatening to entirely repeal Kansas’ endangered species law if Commissioners do not do it for them. In reality, bowing to threats by politicians inevitably leads to “administrative repeal species by species” of our endangered species law as more truly threatened/endangered plants and animals are delisted when they become inconvenient to developers. So, we fight to ensure a healthy natural environment and species diversity for future generations of Kansans.

For several years, the Arapahoe Board of Commissioners have ignored the citizens of Eastern Unincorporated Arapahoe County! The closing of Quincy Road for bike races and events creates a hardship as Quincy Road is the main artery for traveling into the city. Though the subjects are fictional, this type of pornography is still illegal in many American states under obscenity laws as well as in many countries such as Australia. On top of being of questionable legality, even fictional depictions of child porn can be harmful. The viewing of any type of child porn by pedophiles can reinforce sexual associations towards children. This can lead to seeking of more extreme forms of child porn, including real images, and potentially acting upon these urges. Some child molesters will also use images of cartoon child porn such as cub porn in the grooming process of their victims. Cub pornography and its viewers are a minority of the users on SoFurry. On top of making the site safer and not supporting practices that can lead to endangering children, banning cub porn will not hurt the userbase. Instead it could potentially strengthen the userbase by including audiences previously alienated by and uncomfortable with the policy.
