• Gift of Life
I would like to ask that in the event a person locates a living donor, they are able to confidently accept the gift of life no matter their economic status or savings. Let this not be a three year sliver of happiness. Let this be a lifetime of happiness. The cost of dialysis per month surpasses the cost of anti-rejection medications which lose coverage after three years. Please join me in the defense of the gift of life. God bless you sir. I believe in you.

  • Allow Suction Dredge Mining in Oregon
There are currently no less than six environmental impact studies showing the following conclusions: Suction dredge mining is a clean and responsible means of extracting minerals used in communications equipment and healthcare. As a side benefit, suction dredge mining breaks up compacted, unusable spawning grounds during the time that fish are not setting their nests. It activates the in-water food supply for aquatic life, creates cool refuge pools for heat-stressed fish, and removes man-made and natural toxicity from streambeds without costing the state a dime. In the end, when the autumn rains begin, streambed material is again distributed the way Mother Nature would have them. Suction dredge mining requires the purchase of two separate permits in order to legally operate in Oregon, and adherence to a volume of regulations that is environmentally protective. Finally, the economic impact of banning suction dredge mining is a loss of over 4000 jobs and revenue losses of $20-30 million annually. Science supports the use of suction dredges in streambed health, so won't you too?

  • We Support a Charter School in the Germantown High School Building
In June 2014, the School District of Philadelphia closed Germantown High School and put the property up for sale. The closure hurt students, who were left with fewer school choices, the neighborhood, which lost a beloved institution, and a shopping district poised for revival. It left a spiritual, physical, and emotional gap in the Germantown community. The Germantown High School Coalition, a partnership of community groups and concerned residents, has been working to fill that gap. We propose a high school serving 700 students from the neighborhood. Using a project-based approach, the school will provide a strong academic foundation along with career and technical skills. It will use community assets to enhance curriculum and enrich the experience of students. We need your support as we apply for recognition as a charter school. Our school would be the major tenant in a restored historic Germantown High School building. With a new school and a transformed building and campus, Germantown High School, now empty and lifeless, can become a center of neighborhood revitalization.

  • Chris Cuomo you owe Reza Aslan an Apology
CNN host Chris Cuomo just said he thinks that Reza Aslan, a prominent Iranian-American author and commentator who's frequently appeared on CNN, FOX, The Daily Show and elsewhere is 'angry' and demonstrates ‘the hostility’ that makes people afraid of Islam. Here’s the story. During a CNN interview with Reza Aslan on September 29th Alisyn Camerota and Don Lemon discussed what they called the "primitive treatment in Muslim countries of women and other minorities" and asked Aslan if Islam as a religion inherently promotes violence. He answered by saying that the treatment of women and minorities differed in various Muslim countries and that such broad generalizations of a religion with over 1.5 billion people are not only unfair but the definition of bigotry. The interview went viral. That's when CNN host Chris Cuomo referred to Reza Aslan as 'angry' and said Aslan "wound up kind of demonstrating what people are fearful about when they think of the faith, which is the hostility of it." Chris Cuomo is someone who cares deeply about his reputation and has previously responded to criticism - that’s why we think that us coming together to ask for his apology will make him reconsider his words and actions. Will you sign the petition to Chris Cuomo and ask him to apologize? No one denies that there are a those using the name of Islam to commit horrendous crimes. Here’s the thing though. Over the last few years we’ve seen people in this country go on shooting rampages in theaters, in schools and in our streets. Yet no journalist has ever asked ‘does being caucasian or Christian promote violence?’ There is no doubt that there are many troubling crisis happening in numerous places across the world. And that some of the most troubling are taking place in predominantly Muslim countries. However, we’ll never be able to work together as a global community to solve those challenges if our media outlets don’t report the news accurately and instead perpetuate harmful stereotypes. After all, the challenges in Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Morocco and Tunisia – all predominantly Muslim countries – vary greatly from one country to another. Yes, I’ll add my name to the petition asking Chris Cuomo to apologize on the right. Everyday people like us play a very important role in foreign policy decisions. We’ve seen our power over and over again when it comes to supporting diplomacy with Iran. What happens in the Middle East is often complex as countries and cultures are different from one another. Journalism is crucial to our democracy and public debate - without an informed citizenry America’s democracy doesn’t function. When it comes to foreign policy discussions, there are literally lives on the line. It’s time we demand more. +++++ References: Watch the original interview (with fact checking) here: http://www.upworthy.com/cnn-asks-an-expert-a-dumb-question-his-answer-kills-it?g=2&c=upw1 Read the media matters report here: http://mediamatters.org/blog/2014/10/03/cnn-host-reza-aslans-tone-demonstrated-why-peop/201008

  • More Financial Aid to people who need it
My friend will need more financial aid because his mom just lost her job. I think that he should be able to have a little more financial aid than other people. Without more financial aid, a lot of people will not be able to go to college. My dad can no longer work because he was injured on the job and right now, my mom doesn't have a job. I personally, will need more financial aid because my family can't pay for college for me out of their own pocket. Student loans are also a possibility but I also don't want to be in debt coming out of college.
