• President Obama: support a nuclear weapons-free world, as promised
Back in the Cold War days, people were terrified that there would be a nuclear war. Guess what? The danger is still here and it is growing. We are living on borrowed time. Over the next few weeks, President Obama will be making a decision about whether the United States will participate in a historic summit on nuclear weapons that will include delegations from countries around the globe. In 2009 and several times since, President Obama has said that America is committed "to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” But since actions speak louder than words, this petition asks Obama to be a leader in reducing the danger of nuclear weapons. There are more than 16,000 nuclear warheads still left in the world, most of them much more powerful than the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 93% are in the arsenals of the US and Russia. For decades we've been told that we don't have to worry about them--that the US and Russia would never get into a war. It's hard to take those assurances seriously in light of the Ukraine crisis where Russian and U.S. allies are fighting a hot war in the middle of Europe. Even if the US and Russia don't stumble into a war through some crisis like Ukraine, there is always the danger of an accident triggering a nuclear conflict. Plus, recent research has shown that even a very "limited" war, such as between India and Pakistan, involving less than 1% of the world's nuclear arsenals, would trigger global climate disruption, cut food production across the world and lead to a "nuclear famine" that would put 2 billion people at risk. Fortunately, a new, global movement is underway to ban nuclear weapons on the basis of their unacceptable humanitarian impacts. In February, 2014, representatives of 146 nations, 3/4 of the world, met in Mexico to discuss what will happen if these weapons are used and what we can do to prevent that. But the United States BOYCOTTED the meeting! The well-entrenched military-industrial complex plans to spend a trillion dollars over the next 30 years on “modernizing” the American arsenal. There will be a follow-up Humanitarian Impact Conference this December, in Vienna. This time, the U.S. should take the high road, constructively attend, and provide leadership to this urgent campaign to rid the world of the greatest threat to human survival.

  • Safe Living for Recovering Addicts & Change Felony Laws Pertaining to Expunging Records for High ...
It is hard for convicted felons to move on with their lives when the society we live limits us from living in positive neighborhoods and does not allow us to clean our records. Living in recovery is hard enough, and being forced to live in the same neighborhoods that we grew up in makes it even harder. Finding jobs is also an issue. If we had the ability to prove our recovery in order to expunge records it would make our lives more successful and reduce recidivism.

  • Lower Jewish schools tuitions
Every year parents go through stress and depression finding and registering their kids in a (yeshiva) Jewish school . Kids go through stress and humiliation next to their friends because they might not be in the same school next year because their parents can't afford the school tuition any longer. I personally go through hell every year trying to keep my kids in school and to not drop out at a very young age like most of our community children do just to end the headache and depression the whole family has every school year.

  • Tell Costco: Say NO to GMO salmon
A growing number of major grocery store chains have made commitments to not sell GMO salmon. Even if the FDA approves this risky fish, by ensuring that the world's largest retailers refuse to sell it, we can send a strong message that there is no market for it. Unfortunately, despite the fact that more than 35,000 people have written to Costco's CEO asking him to commit to keep GMO fish off store shelves, this retail giant is still lagging behind its competition. So now we need to turn up the heat and flood Costco's customer service inbox. Tell Costco to join its competitors and just say no to GMO salmon!

  • Lift the ban on E-cigs in Greenbrier County
I want the county I live in to change their clean air act so that people can use their electronic cigarettes and personal vaping devices inside. Leave it up to individual business owner to make the choice as to wether or not people can do this in their establishments. By banning them they are forcing people who have quit smoking to have to be in designated smoking areas.

  • Keep Our Neighborhood Safe
Self-storage facilities can increase traffic of individuals carrying large loads they are unaccustomed to transporting and large vehicle traffic, increase illegal and unsafe storage of hazardous chemicals and materials, and invite dangerous individuals and activities into school zones and neighborhoods. Even Self-Storage Association, in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, sent an alert to self-storage owners and managers about the potential for illegal use of these units in connection with terrorism. Our elementary school and family neighborhood is not an appropriate site for this large industrial facility. Furthermore, the East Rockville Neighborhood Plan, and the Rockville Master Plan call for limiting the Industrial Development of the Southlawn/Redgate area to prevent negative impact on the "character and quality" of the surrounding residential areas. The goals and objectives of the already approved Neighborhood Plan include: -The East Rockville community wishes to retain its existing sense of identity as a quiet, secure, residential neighborhood. -All other land uses adjacent to East Rockville must enhance the community. -Ensure that institutional, commercial, and industrial uses within and adjacent to the community do not impact on the residential quality of life in the neighborhood. This 4-level, 800-900-unit self-storage facility is proposed to be six times the size of the existing structure, negatively impacting the character and quality of our neighborhood, and introduces an ‘unacceptable risk’ to the safety of families and children, and our identity as a safe and secure school zone and neighborhood.

  • Stop the killing of deer in city limits by deer mitigation!
All over the country, states are spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars on killing deer in hopes of cutting back the herd, only later to realize(even after 20 years) that it didn't even work. One study reports only a 75% accuracy rate and a recovery rate of 82% in bow hunters. This means the deer will likely be injured, not killed, then run off and not be found for hours or even days - if at all - all this time suffering a slow, painful death. With these 1,000 signatures, we ask the DWR (Department of Wildlife Resources) of Utah to put a stop to this senseless killing!!!!

  • Joni Ernst: Sign the People's Pledge
The Huffington Post just leaked recordings of a secret talk that Senate candidate Joni Ernst gave at the exclusive, closed-door meeting that Charles and David Koch hosted for as many as 300 billionaires earlier this summer.[1,2] She never meant for anyone other than those billionaire conservatives to hear or see this: "The exposure to this group and to this network and the opportunity to meet so many of you, that really started my trajectory." I was born and raised in Iowa, and I think it's time to clean up Iowa's elections. Joni Ernst should sign the People's Pledge--the popular agreement negotiated by Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown in their 2012 Senate race to keep elections clean and accountable to the people of their state by rejecting advertisements from outside donors on their behalf. If Ernst is truly committed to the people of Iowa, she'll sign on. If she doesn't, voters will see that she's actually committed to the Koch brothers and their network of out-of-state billionaire extreme right-wing conservatives. Support for the People's Pledge is strong across party lines-- in fact, voters are five times more likely to vote for a candidate who supports the People’s Pledge.[3] A candidate who's more committed to Iowa's voters than to out-of-state donors should have no trouble signing on.
