  • Gov Brown: Keep teaching standards high
Teachers teaching core subjects should be required to have Bachelor's degrees. As a parent of a child in California public schools, I join other parents and teachers concerned that: Lowering teaching standards compromises quality programs for students; This sets a dangerous precedent to de-professionalize teaching by allowing substitutes by non-professional teachers; The Commission has created confusion and has compromised the safety and education of students by authorizing unqualified personnel to teach core academic subject areas; These actions fly in the face of the California legislature's requirement of a Bachelor's degree to teach academic subjects.

  • Poverty wages are a Losing Bet at Twin River Casino
The money never stops flowing at the Twin River Casino – until it reaches the front door. Rhode Island's largest gaming and entertainment venue has been driving its valet drivers closer and closer to poverty. Over the last few years, the casino has lowered wages for new hires and steadily decreased healthcare coverage. Right now, valets make as little as $3/hour or even less. It's not a wage that anyone can live on. We’re uniting together as a community to support the valets in their negotiations for better treatment. Sign the petition to demand the Twin River Casino pay its employees higher wages and provide affordable healthcare coverage for their families!

  • Stop The Slippery Slope To Another War In Iraq
Today’s crisis in Iraq has its origins in the Bush Administration's disastrous decision to invade in 2003. As we continue to live with the consequences of those mistakes, we must recognize the hard reality that lasting and sustainable peace in Iraq can only be achieved with an Iraqi-led political solution. As President Obama has said, there is no viable military solution to this crisis. That is why the recent bombing airstrikes launched in Iraq by U.S. military forces -- and the calls by some in Congress to escalate further -- are troubling. The risks of mission creep, unintended consequences, and incremental escalation are just too high. And after more than a decade of conflict, America cannot afford another Iraq war. We must not repeat the same mistakes of the past nor forget the lessons of past military interventions that led to war, even with the sincerest intentions to keep them limited and brief. We welcome President Obama’s swift decision to provide humanitarian aid to the innocent men, women, and children who have been trapped by this dangerous conflict. But if U.S. military intervention backfires and ignites another Iraq war, more civilians in Iraq would suffer -- along with American lives and interests. For all these reasons, we urge the President and Congress to reject further U.S. military action in Iraq. Stop America from sliding down the slippery slope to war!

  • Sign the petition for a pro-choice Senate candidate
We're sure you’ve heard the news: Sen. John Walsh has decided to take his name out of the running for re-election. Because Walsh already won the primary, the Montana Democratic Party now must hold a convention to pick a new candidate. It’s been rumored that some of the candidates in the mix aren’t pro-choice. Montana has a long history of electing pro-choice Democrats to statewide office who trust Montana women and support reproductive freedom. There's so much at stake in this election. If we lose this pro-choice seat in the Senate, it’s going to be that much harder to block attacks on our rights and nearly impossible to get qualified nominees onto our nation’s courts. We can influence this process by showing an overwhelming support for candidates who support reproductive freedom, but we have to move quickly. Join us in calling on the Montana Democratic Party to respect Montana voters by backing a Senate candidate who’ll be an advocate for a woman's right to access contraception and abortion.

  • Stop "Mission Creep" in Iraq
When President Obama gave a speech to the nation about his plans to conduct air strikes in Iraq, he failed to clearly explain why his decision to order airstrikes in Iraq without Congressional authorization was Constitutional and legal. [1] The House overwhelmingly passed legislation introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern requiring the President to come to Congress for authorization before using military force in Iraq. [2] Minority Leader Pelosi and almost all Democrats supported the legislation. [3] Before that, more than 100 Members of the House signed the bipartisan Barbara Lee-Scott Rigell letter insisting that the President come to Congress before using military force in Iraq. [4] Members of Congress must speak up now demanding that there be Congressional authorization before any further military action. And major media, especially the New York Times and the Washington Post, must prominently address the question of whether the President has Constitutional authority to conduct airstrikes in Iraq and what the legal limit of his authority is. Urge the Administration, Congress, and the media to comply with and uphold the Constitutional role of Congress in deciding when to use military force by signing our petition.
